Chicken cost skyrockets even after Eid
Chicken meat is being sold at Rs950 per kilogramme in the city and Rs1,000 per kg in the surrounding areas. Live chickens is priced at Rs650 per kg in the city and Rs670 in the suburbs.
There is no one to question the vendors about these prices. The government's claims about reducing inflation have fallen flat, and the rising prices of chicken in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi show no signs of decreasing.
A boycott campaign against buying chicken has proven ineffective, failing to achieve any success. The local Poultry Association states that the high demand for chicken in the market isn't being met with sufficient supply.
Since the night before Eid, chicken demand has tripled across hotels, motels, barbecue shops, dhaba, and food streets, but the supply has not increased to meet this demand.
According to Khurshid Abbasi, the vice president of the Poultry Association, the prices of chicken will not decrease until the supply increases.
The cost of chicken feed, medicines, and other essentials has risen by up to 300%, he adds.
Citizens Faisal Ali and Bahzad Ali complain that chicken prices have remained out of control since the night before Eid.
The market committee sets the official price of chicken at Rs412 per kg but remains silent, while price control magistrates seem completely powerless in controlling the prices.
The Chairman of the Price Control Committee, who has set the official price of Rs412 per kg, must ensure that chicken is sold at this price, or else resign, says another citizen Noor Zaman.
He adds the entire government structure is based on lies. If the Prime Minister claims inflation is at just 1.5%, the Price Control and Market Committees continue to claim that chicken prices are under control.
The price of watermelon is Rs20 per kg in cities, and Rs5 to Rs10 per kg in rural areas. Bur during the Eid holidays, watermelon was sold for Rs120 per kg. Sugar, with a government-set price of Rs164 per kg, is being sold in the market for Rs180 per kg.
Due to the massive discrepancy between official and market prices, the Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner (DC) has stopped setting official prices for ghee, sugar, and flour altogether.

Suthra Punjab programme now fully operational: minister
LAHORE: Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique said that the Suthra Punjab programme has successfully moved beyond its experimental phase, and he expects that 100 percent results from the waste management companies. He conveyed these remarks while chairing a review meeting on Friday which included Punjab Local Government Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Mian, Special Secretary Asia Gul, and Additional Secretary Ahmer Kaifi. Rafique emphasised the importance of addressing the accumulation of garbage in corners, in addition to the ongoing cleanliness operations in residential areas. He directed officials to improve the waste collection process, stating that it is inadequate to collect garbage only in the morning. He advocated for a model of waste collection that operates twice daily in commercial areas. The Minister stated there will be zero tolerance for any failure to comply with directions issued by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who is currently visiting various districts. He underscored that there is no room for laxity in meeting cleanliness targets and stressed the need for better performance from field monitoring officers. 'The CEOs of waste management companies must leave their offices and conduct frequent visits to the field," he said. He referred to the exemplary measures taken during Eid-ul-Azha and suggested that the same model could be applied on ordinary days for improved results. He also mentioned that villages should be cleaned in a phased manner, and contractors are expected to deploy their full resources to ensure cleanliness in every village. He warned that action would be taken if the villages remained unclean. The meeting concluded with a decision to establish a special monitoring cell at the provincial level to oversee practical measures on a daily basis. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Punjab minister steps up criticism of PTI founder
LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bokhari has strongly rejected the PTI founder's recent statements about inadequate jail facilities, calling them completely false and misleading. She stated that the PTI founder is receiving B-Class privileges that most other inmates in the same category do not have access to. Azma Bokhari said that the man who wakes up at noon even on Eid is now shamelessly claiming he's being given dirty water for ablution. With what face is he making such claims?' She further criticised the PTI founder's double standards, saying, 'The same individual who once had others' air conditioners removed is now spreading false propaganda about being denied facilities in jail. This is nothing more than a desperate attempt to gain public sympathy and discredit state institutions.' Azma Bokhari questioned the credibility of PTI's political strength, remarking, 'How can a party with no leader at the helm even think of launching a protest movement?' Referring to the ongoing legal proceedings related to May 9, she emphasised that the decisions being made are in accordance with the Constitution and the law. She noted that those involved in anti-state conspiracies have been legally declared as rebels. Addressing the PTI founder's personal conduct, the minister said, 'He sacrificed the children of the nation for his political agenda while ensuring that his own children live safely and luxuriously in the United States.' In conclusion, Azma Bokhari reiterated that the youth of Pakistan is now politically aware and will no longer fall for divisive and deceptive narratives. She affirmed that the government and state institutions will continue to counter every conspiracy strictly within constitutional and legal frameworks. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
