Stormers coach Dobson would have preferred Durban but they could be headed for Scotstoun for URC playoffs

Stormers coach John Dobson seems to have painted himself into an interesting corner because of the form of a Durban prop that is likely to make way for another Durban prop.
The Durban dilemma for Dobson is that he has signed Springbok looshead Ntuthuko Mchunu from the Sharks, the Maritzburg College old boy, only to have given a spectacular weekend URC debut to Vernon Matongo, a Durbanite himself
Matongo was excellent for the Stormers in their defeat of the Dragons at the weekend. The pizzazz was all about Damian Willemse's 100th cap, but there were sideshows from openside flank Paul de Villiers Durban schoolboy Matongo.
The former Northwood schoolboy forced several scrum penalties to indicate that he is not going to give in to Mchunu when swaps Durban for Cape Town at the end of this season. Dobson believes Matongo and De Villiers are 'going to be huge'.
'I would love to take credit for it, but I can't, as the truth is that we have been helped by the injuries in that I have been taught a valuable lesson,' said Dobson.
'Had Deon (Fourie) not been injured I would probably have carried on playing him and we would not have got to see Paul get his opportunity. I always knew Paul was a star for the future and very capable, but I wasn't going to back him just yet.
"Now that he has got to play he has shown he is more than ready and more than good enough.
'The way players such as Paul and Vernon have progressed is a big plus that we are getting out of these last few weeks of the season. The depth has been grown, but as I say, sometimes that has been by accident rather than necessarily by design.'
Dobson added that he was pleased with the physicality of his players but unsure what to make of the weekend results that indicate that his team is not going to Durban for the quarter-finals.
'We pretty much thought that we were going to go to Durban the whole time,' said Dobson.
'That looks increasingly unlikely, especially when you see the team Leinster put out tonight. They're going to go full strength next week against Glasgow, we expect them to win that game, which would mean we go to Scotstoun.'
Why the Stormers would prefer Durban has more to do than just the travel -— the Scotstoun is not a stadium the Stormers have a good record at.

'Last year, Glasgow were at their full pomp, and I know we lost that quarterfinal by 10-plus at the end, but we were in it until quite late in the game. So if we have to go that way, we will go that way,' said Dobson.
'If things go wrong next Friday against Cardiff, we'll have to go to Kings Park.
"I wouldn't complain if we had to go to Pretoria to face the Bulls either. But we would never jerry-rig a game; we play on a Friday night, so we have to wrap our heads around going to Scotstoun.

Mabasa scored fifteen goals in 48 games last season, and that was an average return after he netted nineteen goals in 33 matches the season before. So, as the new season beckons, Mabasa will be eager to improve his numbers upfront by contributing to as many goals as he possibly can for the team. As such, when he went through a rough patch last season, resulting in him losing his place in the starting berth, it was his replacement, Evidence Makgopa, who offered him more support. So, that's why Mabasa doesn't look at the rest of the strikers at Pirates as his direct competitors, but rather as brothers. 'One thing about us is that there's healthy competition. You can actually see when we are doing finishing drills after training, the amount of support and love we share (is there),' he said. 'Take Evidence, for example, he's one person that knows almost everything that I've to deal with last season. Yet that time he was playing ahead of me. 'He supported me, and was there to try and lift me up. He'll be the first one to areye ngwana (let's go, kid). So, that's the sort of thing. I'd do the same thing for him as well. 'So that shows the relationship we have in the team. I think when 'Radio' (Boitumelo Radiopane) scored his first goal, a penalty, everyone ran to him, including myself.' The camaraderie within the Pirates teams runs in the entire group as the new players have quickly fitted in like a glove as well, following an exclusive tour of Spain. 'I think the trip to Spain gave us a chance to integrate them, and maybe away from all the noise in the country at that time,' said Mabasa of the adaptation of the new players. 'For us to be away, and be given that opportunity, I think it worked well because you can see how they performed even in the friendly games. 'Look at (Sipho) Mbule and (Oswin) Appollis' performances in the friendlies. It's just now for them to come back home, and do it here. We believe in them and they have our support.' Mabasa and Co have new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou who has to support them and be supported as well. Ouaddou's job is cut out for him as he has to make the team tick on the field, following the arrival of eleven new players, while getting results as well. The Moroccan-born coach replaces Jose Riveiro who won five trophies and bagged three successive runners-up spots in the league during his three-year reign. Banyana had a poor outing at the recently concluded Women's Africa Cup of Nations as they relinquished their title and finished fourth. Consequently, this put Ellis' future with the team in serious jeopardy, especially given allegations that she had been working without a contract since 2022. Ellis started working with the national teams eleven years ago when she served as Vera Pauw's assistant coach in 2014. During her stint, the 62-year-old has achieved the improbable, including winning Banyana's maiden WAFCON and qualifying for back-to-back World Cups. However, she was unable to defend the crown in Morocco recently due to an underwhelming performance, including losing to eventual champions Nigeria in the semi-final. So, where to go for Ellis? Will she resolve her contractual issues with Safa and stay put to ensure the team qualifies for the 2027 World Cup through next year's WAFCON? 'No comment!' said Ellis during her post-match press conference on Friday following the 4-3 loss to Ghana on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time. 'Because whatever it is that I am going to say right now, it's going to be taken out of context anyway. So, I'd rather say 'no comment'.' While she is tight-lipped about the direction of her future, she has pointed out that lack of time to prepare for their title defence led to their shortcomings. 'I don't want to make excuses, but we had more time in 2022 to prepare. Our league started late, so we have to consider all those factors,' Ellis said. 'We have to consider how we'd go this tournament – so that's why we made sure that we rotated players for freshness. We had four injured in the stands and five outfield substitutes. So, that's how it goes, but we'll go back and look at what we can do better. 'In 2018, we looked at how we played and what we were doing, and we did things a little bit differently in 2022.' Banyana blew hot and cold after the 2022 WAFCON. They reached the World Cup last sixteen for the first time in 2023, missed out on the Olympics and have now relinquished their title. So, as Ellis tries to map the way forward she knows that she has to usher in a new era, and integrate some new players into the team. There were glimpses of a new dawn at WAFCON as Ronnel Donnelly made her international debut and got to share the pitch with her now retired idol Jermaine Seoposenwe. Ellis, though, stresses that the failure of the junior national teams to qualify for major tournaments is what will hinder their progress going forward. 'Like we said, the continent is like a gold-mine, so everyone has got to step up because there are a lot of investments,' Ellis explained. 'You have seen the investments in the other countries. We need to step up or we are going to be left behind. We have the talent, but our youth teams need to qualify for tournaments. 'So, that's the experience that other countries get - when the youth teams go to these tournaments. Ghana, Tanzania, and Nigeria have been doing it. 'Nigeria have been doing it at every level. So, when you see those players coming through with that experience (it becomes very crucial).'
