More Blue Flag Certification beaches to come up in AP
Visiting Rushikonda in Visakhapatnam on Thursday along with Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Visakhapatnam District Collector Harindhira Prasad and GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, the minister informed that few more Blue Flag beaches would be developed in Andhra Pradesh. Assuring shopkeepers and lifeguards that the government would resolve their issues brought to his attention, the minister informed that they discussed measures required to increase the tourists' footfall at the beach.
Later, Kandula Durgesh inspected the double-decker EV buses that will ply along the beach road. He said that the double-decker buses, which are going to be a tourist attraction, will soon be operated in Visakhapatnam. They will provide an enjoyable ride for the tourists and city residents.
Minister Kandula Durgesh expressed hope that the double-decker buses will take Visakhapatnam's tourism sector to the next level. He said that Blue Flag Beach Certification is an international level recognition given based on meeting several parameters. This will increase the revenue sources for the government and create employment opportunities to the locals.
Further, the minister stated that they are focusing on facilities to be provided to the visitors at the beach stretches, including play zones for children and increased greenery, he informed. The Tourism Minister stressed that priority will be given to watersports, wellness centres, eco and adventure tourism.
He said that the Visakhapatnam Port Authority built the international cruise terminal with all amenities and it has been decided to operate it for four times till September. Later, steps will be taken to operate the cruise 365 days, he added.
Later, the minister interacted with students on how the tourism sector aids in providing employment opportunities. The session was organised in the presence of Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinviasa Rao, Sun International Institute Tourism and Management chairman and managing director Srikanth Jasti, and executive director Asha Jasti. The minister lauded the efforts of the institution's management and added that it stands as the top institution in Andhra Pradesh in the hospitality sector. In the days to come, he assured that efforts will be taken to set up a tourism university in Visakhapatnam.
Speaking on the occasion, Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinviasa Rao remarked that students are now showing keen interest in pursuing tourism and hospitality course and appreciated the Sun International management for its commitment and dedication in steering the students towards achieving their goals.

VMRDA approves plans to build residential towers at Madhurawada
The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has given approvals for the construction of residential towers at Madhurawada and an affordable multi-storeyed housing project for the middle-class, in the city. Several crucial proposals were cleared during the VMRDA meeting held under the leadership of its Chairman, M.V. Pranav Gopal, on Friday. Principal Secretary, MAUD, Suresh Kumar was also present. In a statement released by VMRDA Chairman M.V. Pranav Gopal and VMRDA Commissioner K.S. Viswanathan said that approvals were given for the construction of six residential towers (50 floors each) on a 4.07-acre site at 331/1 in Madhurawada under a Joint Venture/PPP model. The towers will include 3BHK and 4BHK flats, 4BHK duplexes, along with a clubhouse, swimming pool, pool deck, children's play area, cycling track, jogging track, and other modern amenities. Meanwhile, the officials have also given permission for the construction of multi-storey apartment complexes —2BHK, 2.5BHK, and 3BHK in Midhilapuri Colony (Madhurawada), Marikavalasa, Veeragunta, and other VMRDA lands. These will be developed in the PPP model to provide affordable housing to the middle-class families. The authorities have approved the construction of the State's first international-standard 'Skateboard Park' near the skating rink at VMRDA Park on Beach Road, with an estimated cost of ₹2.50 crore. The park is anticipated to host the 63rd National Roller Skating Championships. Approvals were also given to construct a park in 5.68 acres of land at 608/1P in Kotturu village in Anakapalli district, with a proposed cost of ₹5.35 crore. Meanwhile, administrative clearance was also given for VMRDA-GVMC road development project between Vepagunta and Pinagadi.

GVMC maintains prudent fiscal path with strong revenue growth
1 2 Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), with an annual budget of nearly Rs 5,000 crore, followed a largely prudent and growth-oriented financial trajectory between 2019-20 and 2023-24. The total revenue income increased from Rs 641.72 crore in 2019-20 to Rs 948.77 crore in 2023-24, driven by a near doubling of tax revenue (from Rs 215.98 crore to Rs 408.73 crore) and steady growth in non-tax revenue (from Rs 295.52 crore to Rs 419.06 crore). However, assigned revenues declined sharply (from Rs 103.52 crore to Rs 57.41 crore). GVMC's 'other income' showed marked volatility during these five years, rising steeply from Rs 26.71 crore in 2019-20 to a peak of Rs 99.7 crore in 2020-21, likely due to one-time or extraordinary inflows, before falling to Rs 68.05 crore in 2021-22 and Rs 63.57 crore by 2023–24. Grants and subsidies remained negligible throughout, indicating increasing fiscal self-reliance. On the expenditure front, revenue spending surged from Rs 433.03 crore to Rs 811.66 crore, with operation and maintenance costs nearly tripling (from Rs 310.36 crore to Rs 698.28 crore). However, the revenue growth rate tapered off in the final two years of the period, indicating that while the corporation expanded its income base, the pace of growth had begun to slow. "This deceleration may be attributed to market saturation or diminishing returns from earlier revenue-enhancing strategies. GVMC's financial performance over the five years indicates an overall positive trajectory, with notable gains in tax and non-tax revenues despite fluctuations in other income streams and limited government support. Yet, the volatility in assigned revenues and the minimal role of grants and subsidies suggest the need to diversify income sources and enhance fiscal resilience against potential reductions in external funding," they added. GVMC plays a central role in managing vital urban infrastructure including roads, public transport, sanitation, water supply, and waste management. Sound financial governance enables the corporation to allocate adequate funding to these sectors. According to experts, through strategic budgeting and disciplined spending, the civic body can pursue long-term infrastructure planning without the risks of overspending or underfunding. Pune to host Tour de France-model annual cycling race from next year
The Maharashtra government on Wednesday announced the launch of 'Pune Grand Challenge Tour 2026', an international-level cycling race scheduled in January, aimed at transforming the Pune district into a hub of global sports and tourism. Modelled on internationally acclaimed races like the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia, the cycling event will cover over 600 kilometers across urban, rural, and hilly terrains of the district, including Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Baramati, Mulshi, Maval, Bhor, and Velhe, authorities said. The announcement came after the Pune district administration and the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was present at the event, said the annual event will establish Pune as a key destination on the global sports calendar. CM Fadnavis stated, 'Through the Pune Grand Challenge Tour, we are organising a world-class cycling competition. This will help present Pune's rich culture, traditions, and natural beauty to a worldwide audience. The event will not only promote a healthy lifestyle but also attract massive investments in tourism and industry'. Pune Grand Challenge was conceived from Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi's visionary Integrated Tourism Development Plan, designed to transform lesser-known talukas of Pune into vibrant tourism destinations. Infrastructure development has already begun in over 200 villages along the route, including road upgrades, health facilities, and digital connectivity, said an officer. A dedicated mobile app and digital platforms will offer real-time updates, tourist guides, and immersive experiences for viewers and participants, he added. Thousands of professional and amateur cyclists are expected to participate, and over 10,000 spectators are anticipated. According to the district's Integrated Tourism Development Plan, the event is expected to generate around Rs 1,000 crore in tourism revenue in its inaugural year. The initiative also aims to create over 50,000 direct jobs and support lakhs of livelihoods through tourism-related activities, rural homestays, and local crafts. The event has been recognised by the Cycling Federation of India. It is currently awaiting UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) accreditation which could soon place it on the UCI World Tour calendar. The event will be promoted globally through tie-ups with broadcasters such as Star Sports and Eurosport, and is expected to reach a worldwide audience of over 10 crore viewers. The state government is also working with corporate sponsors like Tata, Bajaj, and the Poonawalla Group to fund the event through public-private partnerships.
