
Elon Musk's Hyperloop has a key flaw. Chinese scientists may have found ‘cure'
A study published by China's peer-reviewed Journal of Railway Science and Engineering on May 16 showed that even minor imperfections – such as uneven coils or bridge deformations – would turn a journey into an ordeal, even in near-airless tunnels.
But the engineers – who are working at the world's first full-scale test line in central China – also said they found a way to slash turbulence intensity by nearly a half, reducing 'extremely severe bumps' to levels that were 'pronounced, but not unpleasant'.
The researchers, led by Zhao Ming from the maglev and electromagnetic propulsion division of state-owned China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), said they used supercomputer simulations and scaled-down prototype tests for the study.
The team found that track irregularities and electromagnetic resonance were enough to trigger violent low-frequency vibrations in maglev cars travelling at the technology's cruising speed of 1,000km/h (612mph).
Using the 1940s-era Sperling Index, an international metric for ride comfort, the study showed that oscillations amplified at specific speeds, with a peak at 400km/h (249mph) reaching a level of vibration deemed 'extremely unpleasant'.
At the next peak, which occurred when the cars were travelling at 600km/h (373mph), the researchers recorded a Sperling Index of 4.2 – a level at which prolonged exposure to the vibrations would be harmful.
According to the paper, once the test cars reached cruising speeds of 1,000km/h, the vibrations lessened to 3.1 on the Sperling Index – defined as 'barely tolerable'.
A system that propels magnetically levitated pods through low-pressure tubes at near-supersonic speeds was first proposed by Musk in 2013, in a white paper that captivated engineers around the world.
Attempts to develop the Hyperloop concept at a SpaceX test track ended in 2023, after a number of technical hurdles, including the challenge of maintaining vacuum integrity and stabilising pods at extreme velocities.
In contrast, China is charging ahead, with the stakes transcending the engineering challenges.
Beijing has made ultra-high-speed magnetic levitation tech a national research priority that could not only redefine global transit, but also transform other critical sectors, including the race to achieve low-cost space launches.
The test facility in Datong, Shanxi province, represents Beijing's bet that China will dominate the next generation of public transport. To that end, its engineers have achieved airtight concrete, millimetre-precision joints and other hard-won feats.
According to the research team, without physical contact between train and track, the system's electromagnetic forces interact with the cabin in unpredictable ways. The result is resonance that would rattle passengers 'with extreme levels of instability'.
'Our research accounted for track irregularities, vertical bending of bridges, and single-frequency excitations induced by lateral irregularities in ground coils,' wrote Zhao and his colleagues.
'Under track excitation at an equivalent speed of 1,000km/h, the car body exhibited peak vibration amplitudes at frequencies of 2.6 Hz, 5.2 Hz, 7.8 Hz, and 10.4 Hz,' they added.
To overcome the problem, the Chinese team developed a hybrid suspension system combining passive air springs with electromagnetic actuators that are controlled by artificial intelligence.
The electricity-powered actuators adopt two cutting-edge control strategies, the paper said. One is a so-called sky-hook that mimics an imaginary damper linking the cabin to a stationary 'sky', using real-time velocity feedback to neutralise low-frequency jolts.
The other strategy, PID control, adjusts suspension forces via proportional, integral, and derivative algorithms, optimised by an NSGA-II genetic AI method to handle variable track conditions.
When tested on a 1:10 scale model with six-axis motion simulators, the system reduced vertical vibration intensity, measured as a root mean square acceleration, by 45.6 per cent under realistic track profiles.
Sperling Index scores stayed below 2.5 – 'more pronounced but not unpleasant' – across all speeds, according to the study.
The researchers said there were still some challenges ahead, such as scaling up the suspension tech for full-sized trains and ensuring that they would work in emergency braking and other extreme conditions.

X says Indian government ordered it to block Reuters News accounts in India

Two Reuters News accounts - @Reuters and @ReutersWorld - were suspended for India users late on Saturday, and displayed a message saying they had been "withheld in IN (India) in response to a legal demand". The Reuters accounts were restored on Sunday night but the status of the others was unclear. X's statement contradicts comments by a spokesperson for India's Press Information Bureau at the weekend who said no government agency had required the withholding of Reuters handles. "On July 3, 2025, the Indian government ordered X to block 2,355 accounts in India, including international news outlets like @Reuters and @ReutersWorld, under Section 69A of the IT Act. Non-compliance risked criminal liability," X said in its post. "We are deeply concerned about ongoing press censorship in India due to these blocking orders. X is exploring all legal options available," it added. Reuters could not determine what specific content the blocking demand referred to and why its removal was sought. Section 69A of India's IT law allows the government to block public access to content "in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state". Orders issued under the section are confidential in nature. In a statement, India's IT ministry said the government had "not issued any fresh blocking order" on July 3. It did not say if an order was issued before that date. The government did not intend to block any prominent international news channel, including Reuters, and had written to X over the weekend to unblock the news agency's accounts, the ministry said. "X has unnecessarily exploited technicalities involved around the process and didn't unblock the URLs," it added. The social media platform in its statement said the Indian government had asked it to restore access to @Reuters and @ReutersWorld after a "public outcry." A Reuters spokesperson at the weekend said the news agency was working with X to get its accounts reinstated in India as soon as possible. On Tuesday, she said the agency had no further comment. The main Reuters account has more than 25 million followers globally, while Reuters World has 718,000. X has long been at odds with India's government over content-removal requests. In March, the company sued the federal government over a new government website the company says expands takedown powers to "countless" government officials. The case is continuing. India has said X wrongly labelled an official website a "censorship portal", as the website only allows tech companies to be notified about harmful online content. China's Li, Brazil's Lula pledge joint effort to bring AI to farming
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Chinese Premier Li Qiang agreed to cooperate on bringing artificial intelligence to improve agriculture in both of their countries, and Lula called on his counterpart to join an initiative aimed at saving the world's forests. In a statement issued from the sidelines of the annual Brics summit in Rio de Janeiro, the two sides also highlighted the 'excellent moment in bilateral relations' and reaffirmed their 'commitment to multilateralism and peace, underlining the role of BRICS in defending multilateral trade and climate regimes'. Plans for the centre, whose focus will be on farming in semi-arid regions, were initially agreed to in Brasília during a meeting last month between Luciana Santos, Brazil's minister of science, technology and innovation, and Lin Xin, China's vice-minister of science and technology and secretary for technological development. One of the centre's first projects will be the creation of an AI laboratory focused on supporting family farming, through a partnership between Brazil's National Semi-arid Institute (Insa) and the China Agricultural University. According to Insa Director José Etham Barbosa, the joint project aims to find ways to connect AI technologies to machinery commonly used on smaller-scale farms to improve environmental monitoring and soil quality. The Sertão region in Brazil's northeast is home to nearly 22 million people, making it one of the world's most populous and biodiverse semi-arid areas. Covering about 11% of the country's territory, it is characterised by heat, drought and sparse vegetation. 'We are bringing together various institutions to advance technology transfer, promote well-being, and embed these technologies into machinery for environmental and soil monitoring, so that we can transform the semi-arid region through this partnership,' Barbosa said at the time. The two sides will also set up a working group tasked with identifying what kinds of technology exchange would support industrial innovation in both countries, and where they could establish more research centres to support the effort. The announcement comes against a backdrop of trade tensions that Beijing is trying to work out with US President Donald Trump, who is holding American tech export restrictions as leverage in his effort to secure greater access to critical minerals for American firms. Last month, both nations said they reached a consensus on the issue, and the US eased limits on some chip design software exports to China. China remains heavily reliant on US technology in hi-tech sectors such as smartphones, semiconductors, software, pharmaceuticals, engines, AI, drones, cloud computing, and autonomous vehicles. Since 2022, Washington has tightened limits on the export of advanced technologies, especially semiconductors needed for AI training, in an effort to curb China's progress in developing military capabilities considered to be a threat to US national security. Chinese firms have been added to the US Entity Lists, restricting their access to high-performance chips from American companies, including Nvidia and AMD. The US has also pressured allies, including the Netherlands and Japan, to block exports of advanced chipmaking tools, notably from the Dutch firm ASML. In response, China has accelerated its push for tech self-reliance. Firms like Huawei and SMIC have registered some success, with Huawei developing its own chips and software, and SMIC producing 7-nanometre chips. However, challenges remain on attracting skilled talent and scaling up production. To overcome these hurdles, China has deepened tech ties with Russia, Malaysia and some other countries. In addition to AI cooperation, Lula and Li Qiang also pledged to expand collaboration on semiconductors and renewable energy, and to strengthen ties between shipyards in both countries. No further details were revealed on these efforts. China is the world's leading shipbuilder, accounting for 50% of global production and launching around 1,700 new vessels each year. The meeting also touched on other points of cooperation, including the development of geostationary satellites and the deepening of the memorandum on 'synergies' between national development programmes. The goal is to build on agreements signed during Xi Jinping's state visit to Brasília in November, when the two leaders pledged to identify projects from Brazil's Growth Acceleration Program, one of Lula's main campaign promises, that could be financed by China's Belt and Road Initiative. The framework was the solution found by Brazilian diplomats to cooperate with the BRI without joining the Chinese trade and infrastructure initiative as Beijing wanted. The leaders concluded their meeting with a request from Lula for China to join the Tropical Forests Forever Fund (TFFF) at COP30, which Brazil is also hosting in November. TikTok reportedly prepping new app in the US as potential sale looms
TikTok is preparing to release a new app in the US as it awaits a potential sale that would maintain its presence for millions of users in the country, according to media reports. The popular video app, owned by Chinese technology company ByteDance, is under pressure to sell its US operations by Sept 17 or face a nationwide ban, due to security concerns raised by US government officials over the firm's ties to China . TikTok is planning to make the new app available on Sept 5 , according to tech news site The Information. The existing app could stop working in March 2026 and when that happens, American users would need to download the new app in order to continue to use TikTok, the publication said. TikTok did not respond to a request for comment. Analysts expect that the new app will attempt to address the government's security concerns. Officials have raised the specter of TikTok sharing user data with the Chinese government, which the company denies. Ray Wang , principal analyst and founder of Constellation Research , said he believes TikTok will remain popular in the US even after a sale. TikTok is used by more than 170 million Americans as a way to entertain and educate themselves by watching videos on the app. Small businesses, influencers and major corporations also post content on TikTok to market products. "There will be a transition period from the old app to the new app," Wang said. "The question is how will data be migrated, and I'm sure they will have a solution for that." President Trump last month gave a 90-day extension until Sept 17 to ByteDance to divest its US operations. The original deadline was Jan 19 , after a law was signed by Trump's predecessor, President Biden , last year, but the deadline has since been extended by Trump several times. TikTok has said that the law "offers no support for the idea" that its Chinese ownership poses national security risks. Potential buyers of ByteDance's TikTok US operations include Oracle Corp (co-founded by billionaire Larry Ellison ), Amazon and an investment group led by Frank McCourt , a former Dodgers owner whose bid includes Shark Tank star Kevin O'Leary , analysts said. San Francisco artificial intelligence company Perplexity said in March that it wants to "rebuild the TikTok algorithm". Any deal would need the approval of the Chinese government. Analysts said it is unlikely a sale of TikTok's US operations would include its algorithm — seen as one of the most valuable parts of TikTok — which surfaces videos of interest to its users. Trump on Friday told reporters that he planned to discuss a TikTok deal with China this week, but declined to name the potential buyer, according to the New York Times . "I think the deal is good for China , and it's good for us," Trump said. "It's money, it's a lot of money." Trump's first administration pushed for a TikTok ban, but the president since had a change of heart. He has met with TikTok executives at Mar-a-Lago, mused about TikTok's popularity with young people and bragged online about his significant following on the platform. During his campaign for a second term, Trump positioned himself as a TikTok advocate, saying "those who want to save TikTok in America, vote for Trump."
