Navy-bound teen fatally shot three days after graduating high school, IL cops say

Miami Herald03-06-2025
DeAngelo Miles had recently received a high school diploma and was preparing to join the U.S. Navy this summer, according to his school and local news outlets.
But his plans came to a halt when he was found fatally shot in the head in a Chicago alley on June 1, just three days after he graduated high school, police said.
A relative was with Miles when they heard gunshots at around 3 a.m., police said. The witness found Miles shot in the head, according to police.
The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chicago police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
'It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the loss of De'Angelo Miles, a recent graduate of the the Class of 2025, Hansberry College Prep said in a statement. 'Our hearts are heavy as we grieve his passing.'
Miles was attending an after-prom party the night of the shooting, family told WLS.
The school's principal told WGN that Miles played football and was planning to join the U.S. Navy after graduation.
No one is in custody, and detectives are investigating, according to police, who did not give a motive for the shooting.

Ira Miles, 37, will serve 49 of those years in prison after being found guilty of child molesting, rape, sexual misconduct with a minor, criminal confinement and intimidation. Miles' sentence was increased due to prior felony convictions. In June, Miles was found guilty of sexually abusing a child relative over the course of several years. The victim told investigators that Miles said if anyone found out about the abuse, he would kill her and another family member, according to a probable cause affidavit. Detectives also spoke with a relative who said Miles would "become violent when he gets upset.'

With knee injury, USC's Alijah Arenas and Eric Musselman weather another setback

Basketball usually took a backseat in early conversations between Eric Musselman and prized recruit Alijah Arenas. On one side was a teenage phenom navigating an early jump to college. On another was a USC men's basketball coach more curious about Arenas' mood, when he woke up and how he made sense of the people and the world around him. And so when USC's coach stood in front of the Galen Center's vibrant new scoreboard Friday morning — two days after it was announced that Arenas would miss six to eight months with a knee injury — Musselman found himself stammering, stitching together the words to encapsulate what the freshman meant to him. 'I probably feel closer to him than anybody that I've coached in a two-month span since he's been on campus,' Musselman said. The bond has already weathered more than most would in four years. First came the reclassification — Arenas skipped his senior year of high school to join USC. Then came the rush course into collegiate basketball as he prepared spring practice. Then, on April 25, Arenas was in a serious car crash that led to him being placed into a coma. After recovering from his injuries, Arenas was barely two weeks back from being medically cleared to practice when he sustained a slight meniscus tear and bone bruise. But even in those 14 days — and just one full practice with Musselman present — Arenas proved enough to be the centerpiece of his coach's vision for USC. 'We built the roster around some of the stuff that he could do, and knowing that he could play the one and the two, and when he played the one, would have great length,' Musselman said. 'And I told people from the beginning of the recruiting process what a great passer he was.' At 6-feet-7, Arenas averaged 30.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game at Chatsworth High before landing 13th in ESPN's Class of 2025. In Arenas' absence, Musselman said he has weighed adding a 14th player to the roster, but would do so only if it 'could help us.' The bigger hurdle, the coach added, would be revenue-sharing limits. Arenas will still be traveling, learning and rehabbing alongside USC. And he'll continue to shadow Musselman in a role the coach never had to explain to him. 'To some people during the recruiting process, you call them and you can't wait to get off the phone, and you're just kind of calling them to try to develop a relationship,' Musselman said. 'The reason that Alijah and I are in such a good spot is because he picked up the phone when I called him. He added: 'We already had a built in trust before he got here.' Musselman said Friday that Terrance Williams (wrist), whose injury he called 'one of the weirdest injuries I've seen,' will return Aug. 25 when the Trojans report for practice on the first day of the academic year. ... Musselman noted that Jordan Marsh has been the team's 'biggest surprise' of the summer, while Rodney Rice will take over as the Trojans' primary ball handler.

Bryce Underwood, Mikey Keene will battle for Michigan starting QB job

Oklahoma vs. Michigan may be the key to the Sooners' football season, but the Wolverines are still figuring some things out up in Ann Arbor. Freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2025, was largely expected to take the reins upon his campus arrival. Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore said Thursday that Underwood isn't locked into starting duties just yet. "He is not the starter now," Moore said. "It's an open competition." Moore brought in quarterback Mikey Keene from Fresno State to compete for the job, too. Keene threw for more than 2,800 yards with 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with the Bulldogs last year. The season before, he threw for more than 2,900 yards with 24 touchdowns and 10 picks. But Keene missed the spring because of injury and will make his team debut when Michigan's fall camp begins next week. Whoever wins the Michigan quarterback job will work with new Wolverines offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, who was hired from North Carolina. Lindsey helped mold Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye into the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. As for Underwood, the odds are still strong that he ends up the starter. The question is whether it's by the time Michigan visits Norman in Week 2 or not. "(Underwood's) been with us since December, continues to do everything he can to be, one, the best teammate he could be, two, to be the best student he could be, and then three, to be the best football player that he could be, a quarterback that he could be for our football team," Moore said. Michigan's road trip to Norman will be one of the biggest matchups of the year and will set the tone for both teams. Will the Wolverines go with the veteran Keene or the true freshman Underwood for a pivotal road start?
