Jorge Costa dead at 53: Jose Mourinho's Champions League winning Porto captain passes away
According to reports in Portgual, Costa suffered a cardiac arrest while at Porto's training camp at the Olival Stadium on Tuesday.
Costa, who had previously had a heart attack in 2022, had reportedly complained of intense heat several times after giving a television interview to SportTV.
A Bola reported that Porto's medical team provided first aid and used a defibrillator, before Costa was taken to the Sao Joao Hospital.
Costa was admitted into intensive care, but died in the early afternoon.
The former central defender played for Porto between 1990 and 2005, making 324 appearances in all competitions for the club.
He is best remembered for serving as Mourinho's captain as Porto famously won the Champions League in 2004.
Porto had beaten Manchester United, Lyon and Deportivo La Coruna in the knock-out stage of the competition, before easing to a 3-0 win over Monaco in the final.
Costa had also lifted the UEFA Cup the previous season and won the Portuguese title on eight occasions with the club.
He also won the Intercontinental Cup, five Taca de Portugal trophies and eight Super Cups during his time at Porto.
Mourinho in 2022 had hailed Costa as a 'leader' of his team, recalling a story where the centre back had done the 'dirty work' in expressing their manager's fury at half-time in a match they had trailed 2-0.
He stated that Costa had then asked him 'coach us', before the defender scored a rare two goals to help secure a 3-2 victory.
Costa returned to the Porto last year to serve as a director of football.
'Jorge Costa, the legendary FC Porto captain and current Director of Professional Football, passed away this Tuesday from cardiac arrest,' a Porto statement read.
'Fútbol Clube do Porto expresses its deepest sadness and consternation at the passing of an inescapable figure in the Club's history.
'Throughout his life, both on and off the field, Jorge Costa embodied the values that define FC Porto: dedication, leadership, passion, and an unwavering spirit of achievement. He touched generations of fans and became a major symbol of Porto.
'In this time of immense grief, Futebol Clube do Porto extends its deepest condolences to Jorge Costa's family, his friends, and all who shared unforgettable moments with him.
'As this is a time of grief for his entire family and for the Porto Alegre family, we ask everyone to exercise the required discretion and respect during this time of farewell. More information will be released in due course.
'Jorge Costa's legacy will forever live on in the memories of all Porto fans.
'You will never be forgotten, Captain.'
The defender made 50 international appearances for Portugal, including representing his nation at the 2002 World Cup.
Costa had a brief spell in the Premier League, making 24 appearances in a loan spell with Charlton in the 2001-02 season.
Cristiano Ronaldo also shared a message on Instagram, writing 'Goodbye, Jorge Costa'
He finished his playing career in Belgium with Standard Liege, before embarking on a managerial career with saw him take charge of 17 different teams.
This included coaching eight different Portuguese teams, including Braga, as well as spells in Cyprus, Romania, France, Tunisia, India and as head coach of Gabon's national team.
A Braga tribute read: 'SC Braga received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Jorge Costa, a historic figure in national football who, throughout his extensive sporting career, also represented the colors of our club, both as head coach and assistant coach.
'The terrible news of his passing shakes the entire national sports community, and SC Braga cannot help but join in the immense pain shared by his family, his friends, and the entire FC Porto structure.'
Charlton also paid tribute writing in a statement: 'We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Jorge Costa at the age of 53.
'The thoughts of everyone at Charlton Athletic are with Jorge's family and friends at this difficult time.'

Kick It Out say reports of abuse and discrimination in football is at record high
Football 's anti- discrimination charity Kick It Out received almost 1,400 reports of discrimination during the 2024-25 season, a record high. There were 1,398 reports of abuse, Kick It Out revealed, up from 1,332 in the 2023-24 campaign. The data shows a rise in sexism, transphobia, and faith-based abuse, with racism remaining the most reported form of discrimination. There was a big spike in sexism and misogyny, with the number of complaints rising by 67 per cent, with a rise also in youth football. Kick It Out chief executive Samuel Okafor said: 'These figures show that discrimination remains deeply embedded across the game, but the rise in abuse in youth football should be a wake-up call. 'No one should be facing hostility simply for taking part. 'What we're seeing now is that fans aren't just reporting abuse, they're demanding action. There's been a clear shift this season in how people are calling out sexist behaviour, both online and in stadiums, and asking football to treat it as seriously as any other form of hate.' 'At the same time, it's clear that online platforms are still falling short. The volume of abuse remains high, and too often, those responsible face no consequences. 'Fans are doing their part by speaking up. It's now up to football authorities, tech companies and government to show they're listening, and to act.' The Football Association (FA) confirmed they were working with UK police and the relevant social media platforms, while Carter said she would 'a step back' from social media as a result of the abuse she has received throughout the tournament. In May, Kick It Out has called on the football authorities to show 'solidarity and support' to the trans community after the English and Scottish governing bodies banned transgender women from the competitive female game. The football associations updated their policies in light of last month's ruling from the UK Supreme Court, which clarified that the word 'sex' in the 2010 Equality Act meant biological sex. Previously, transgender women had been able to compete provided they reduced testosterone to accepted levels. The FA's new policy came into effect on June 1.

Russell Martin sends 'dropped' Rangers stars a message after Champions League stroll
It was a big night for the Light Blues after his weekend interview but he came through it Russell Martin praised the response of his players as they roared back from his roasting after he was rewarded for ripping up his Rangers side to put one foot the Champions League play-off. Djeidi Gassama scored either side of a Cyriel Dessers penalty against Viktoria Plzen to all but set up a clash with either Club Brugge or Salzburg for a place in the lucrative league phase of UEFA's premier competition. Martin blasted some of his players following a 1-1 draw against Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday and he dumped four players from the starting line up - including skipper James Tavernier and last season's star midfielder Nico Raskin. Danilo also dropped out along with Kieran Dowell but the move paid off with Dessers on the scoresheet and debut boy Oliver Antman turning in a star display just 24 hours after signing from Go Ahead Eagles. Martin was delighted, but promised his axed players that they still have a big part to play with Tavernier and Raskin - bizarrely booked for dissent while warming up as a sub - both coming on along with Danilo. He said: 'From Saturday to today, they took everything on. Amazing energy at the start of the game and real moments of quality. 'It's really difficult trying to learn a lot of detail and apply it with the right intensity and courage all the time, especially after a tough afternoon on Saturday. 'I'm really proud of the team. I don't like the word dropped. You don't get dropped from the team. I said to the guys you don't get dropped form the team, we're going to need everyone - people will come in and people will come out, we need a freshness. 'It's not easy to drop anyone, especially players who have been really important to this team. But they're all difficult, one is not tougher than the other but as the head coach you have to do what you think is the best for the team to win on the night and to be fair to those guys they came on and did brilliantly. 'I know there's a tendency to make it a big thing and it's not at all. Tonight was the best team and Saturday will be a different team I'm sure because we have to go again with the same energy and intensity and rely on a lot of players. It won't be the same XI week in, week out.' On new boy Antman, who won the penalty late in the first half for Dessers to score and wowed the crowd, he said: 'Even at half-time, credit to him and my assistant manager Gilly (Matt Gill) because he showed him a lot of clips while I was talking to the team. 'He was so keen to get on the ball in the first half he was in a little bit of the wrong position which after being battered on the training pitch with information and video room, he took it on so well. You can see why I wanted to sign him: he's athletic, game, willing and rally competitive. And he has moments of real quality and I think he'll be a really good player for us.' It's now four goals in three games for ex Sheffield Wednesday man Gassama and Martin said: 'Gass is really stepping up in terms of intensity because he wants to score. "We showed him some clips when we signed him of him ending up too far from goal but he has taken on the information really well. 'He likes the ball to his feet to do stuff but we're trying to convince the guys that one touch is better than five at times. There will be times we need him to get on the ball and get us up the pitch and dribble from deep but they need to be really explosive in their final action. 'We lacked it on Saturday. There were no runs in behind against a Motherwell team on the front foot and aggressive. I was disappointed with that. We lacked any real threat and tonight we had loads of it.' And on Dessers he said: 'Cyriel Dessers was amazing. He hasn't been ready to start. He played against Middlesbrough and tweaked his hamstring. Then we got him fit again and brought him off the b bench in Greece. I've been chomping at the bit to get him involved and he took the ball in well and we could have found him even more but he was brilliant.'

The Ibrox side delivered a stunning defence of manager Russell Martin's methods to all but secure a place in the play-off round. There was no sulking, no grumbling. Any bruised egos were on the bench, out of harm's way, until the game was safe. James Tavernier came on to take the armband from John Souttar when it was already 3-0 and while Rangers lived slightly dangerously at times, this margin of lead was preserved prior to next Tuesday's re-match in Czech Republic. Dropping the undroppables The supposed undroppables were dropped, including Tavernier. Although he scored at Motherwell at the weekend, he paid for his part in the Fir Park side's equaliser. Tavernier being Tavernier, one suspects he will reclaim his place before long but replacement Max Aarons let no one down here. This was a new Rangers, which is something the fans have been crying out for. Like his time at Ibrox as a player, Martin's patience has proved short. He clearly isn't intending his managerial tenure to be as brief. On this evidence, it won't be. In addition to Tavernier, Nico Raskin was named among the substitutes which was perhaps even more surprising news. The Belgian midfielder has often been Rangers' star man on such occasions but was relegated to a supporting role, although he did make an appearance midway through the second half in place of Joe Rothwell. Ibrox seemed pleased to see him but with the hosts in such control, no one could object to the fact he hadn't started, even if there had been some moans before kick-off. This was far too late for inclusion in the matchday programme. Cameron, however, was featured. 'Job if you were not a footballer?' Farmer, he replied. 'My auntie has farms,' he explained. Well, he proved far from agricultural here, slipping into the role of playmaker as naturally as he did at his former club Dundee. As for Djeidi Gassama, who is proving the revelation of Rangers' season so far, he is only 21. These three players combined brilliantly midway through the opening half, with Cameron feeding Gassama on the left and the former Sheffield Wednesday winger cutting back for Antman, whose strong shot was heroically cleared off the line by Vaclav Jemelka. It was a timely early goal because the visitors had settled quicker, as expected given the raft of changes made by Martin. The pace of right winger, No 99 Amar Memic, was causing problems. Rangers had their own livewire in Antman, whose cross on ten minutes forced the Plzen defence into desperate measures while giving the Ibrox crowd a glimpse of the excitement he looks set to bring. There's still 17-year-old Mikey Moore, who has signed on loan from Spurs but is not yet registered to play, to come in. He might have to bide his time although fans will relish the prospect of him on the opposite flank from Antman. Still, don't forget the old stagers. Dessers played his part and had an integral role in Rangers' opener after 15 minutes. The ever-dangerous Gassama played a give-and-go into the Nigerian striker and got back what he wanted before supplying the composed finish to set the tone for his night. Gassama performed the role Dessers had carried out for him earlier when receiving the ball from Antman, who had picked it up deep in his own half. Gassama quickly returned the ball to the winger, whose quick progress towards the Plzen box spooked their defenders.
