Missouri extends Eli Drinkwitz's contract through 2029, adds money to assistant salary pool
Missouri football coach Eli Drinkwitz received a second contract extension in less than two years on Thursday, this one keeping him with the Tigers through the 2029 season while adding additional money to his salary pool for assistants.
Drinkwitz signed an extension in December 2023 that paid him $46 million through the 2028 season, along with incentives such as $250,000 for a first-round appearance in the College Football Playoff and $750,000 for winning the national championship.
'I'm incredibly grateful for the continued belief in our vision,' said Drinkwitz, who is entering his sixth season at Missouri. 'I'm proud of the staff we've assembled and excited to keep pushing forward together.'
Drinkwitz was the SEC coach of the year two years ago, when he led the Tigers to an 11-2 record and a Cotton Bowl win. They followed that up with a 10-3 record and a Music City Bowl win last season, giving the program back-to-back double-digit win seasons for the first time in a decade and only the third time in school history.
Drinkwitz, who arrived in 2020 after one season leading Appalachian State, is 38-24 with the Tigers, breaking Dan Devine's record for the most wins in the first five seasons by a Missouri coach. He also has coached 17 players that were chosen in the NFL draft, including Armand Membou, the seventh overall pick of the New York Jets in April.
'The consistent progress we've seen under Coach Drinkwitz's leadership is inspiring,' Missouri athletic director Laid Veatch said in a statement. 'This extension, along with increased investment in our coaching and support staff, reflects our commitment to sustaining success at the highest level.'
The Tigers open the season Aug. 28 against Central Arkansas with a roster that will have to replace numerous stars, including Membou, second-round pick Luther Burden III at wide receiver and Brady Cook at quarterback. But the Tigers have a favorable schedule with their first six games at home, including rival Kansas and SEC foes South Carolina and Alabama.
The school is also undertaking a $250 million renovation of Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium due to be completed next year.

Finebaum: Swinney is player's coach who has 'transformed' with where college football is now. ESPN's Paul Finebaum has taken plenty of shots at Dabo Swinney through the years, but the veteran college football commentator continued with his apparent about-face on the Clemson coach Friday on "Get Up." Finebaum joined host Mike Greenberg and studio panelists Harry Douglass, Mike Tannenbaum and Damien Woody to discuss some of the top storylines entering the 2025 college football season. In one segment, Greenberg replayed Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik's comments from ACC Kickoff in which the former 5-star recruit from Austin, Texas, recalled how Swinney had stuck with him after a shaky 2023 season that included four losses. "After my sophomore year, when everybody kind of told me I sucked and wasn't very good, a lot of people wanted me out of Clemson," Klubnik said Thursday. "Coach Swinney pulled me into his office and told me, 'Cade, I believe in you and let's go to work.' ... When he could have gone and done what a lot of other coaches would do, but didn't and pulled me in tight and said I believe in you. I'll never forget that moment." Finebaum praised Swinney for sticking with Klubnik and said that the Clemson coach had gradually "transformed" with where the game is now -- and that it might be enough fuel to help a Tigers return to the national championship game this season. "Greeny, I don't think I need to remind you how many times I've been here talking about how Dabo's dynasty is done -- oh, maybe five or six. But what Dabo Swinney has done, he has transformed with where we are in college football. And at the core, he is a player's coach. His players love him, and that moment that we heard yesterday in Charlotte was significant, and it may be the fuel that helps Clemson come back from where they have been to possibly playing for a national championship. And that's the reason (for) the coach-player relationship, and Dabo has it with many others, as well." Finebaum said last week that Swinney had returned Clemson to national title contender status and added: "I think this is his best team since the 2019 title run." What a difference a year makes. Finebaum says Cade Klubnik is better QB than LSU's Garrett Nussmeier In a round of "Fact or Fiction" during Friday's episode of Get Up, Greenberg asked Finebaum whether it was a fact that Klubnik was a better quarterback than Nussmeier. Finebaum's answer: "That's fact, and we're splitting hairs here because these are the two best quarterbacks in the country. Nussmeier is the son of a coach. He is well-prepared, but I like Klubnik better in the clutch. I saw Nussmeier make too many mistakes under pressure, tried to do way too much." Klubnik threw for 3,639 yards and 36 touchdowns to only six interceptions in 14 games last season while leading Clemson to 10 wins, an ACC championship, and the program's first College Football Playoff appearance since 2020. Nussmeier threw for more yards (4,052) than Klubnik a year ago and helped lead LSU to six straight wins and a No. 8 ranking after their season-opening loss to USC. But he had costly turnovers in losses to Texas A&M and Alabama as part of a three-game losing streak that dropped Brian Kelly's team from playoff contention. LSU finished 9-4 after a win over Baylor in the Texas Bowl. Clemson and LSU will open the season at Memorial Stadium on Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ABC. With the rumors continuing to swirl around the Tigers, the latest report gives insight into where the team will focus if they don't land Suarez. As Suarez is arguably the top player on the trade market ahead of the trade deadline, Detroit needs to have some backup options in the chance the team can't acquire the third baseman. David Schoenfield of ESPN would say that the ball club will look to add to the bullpen after a few relievers have been struggling. 'At the minimum, the Tigers will be adding to a bullpen that has been hemorrhaging runs of late,' Schoenfield wrote. 'Will Vest has remained solid, but Tommy Kahnle had been their other late-game high-leverage reliever, and he just had a recent run of nine runs allowed over three outings. Bednar, a two-time All-Star, has rediscovered his feel and command after a rough 2024.' 'He also comes with an additional season of team control,' Schoenfield continued. 'The other top relievers who might be available include Emmanuel Clase of the Cleveland Guardians, and Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax of the Minnesota Twins, but don't look for an intradivision trade there.' 'One key reason not to rule out Suarez to Detroit: History suggests the teams making the biggest deals at the trade deadline aren't the ones chasing a playoff spot or simply trying to hold on to a wild-card berth, but those teams already in first place,' Schoenfield wrote. 'The Tigers know they're going to the postseason; they want to make their team better for October. A team that isn't guaranteed a playoff spot is risking future value for a playoff run that might not exist.' There's no wonder why Suarez is being heralded as the best option at the deadline, with him hitting 36 home runs and 86 RBIs to go along with a .252 batting average as he's having a career resurgence with Arizona. At any rate, Detroit is 60-43, which puts them at the top of the American League Central division with the second place team in the Cleveland Guardians at 51-50. The Tigers start a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday evening, but still look ahead to the trade deadline as it remains to be seen how active the franchise will be. Ex-Memphis player accused of sending playbook to opponent in college football shocker
The Memphis football team appears to have had a mole. Tahj Ra-El, a former player who has since transferred to Purdue, has been accused of sabotaging the Tigers by sending photos of their playbook to an opposing quarterback before a game last season. Instagram messages obtained by Tiger Sports Report allegedly show Ra-El — who exited the program in October — sending a picture of the Memphis playbook, along with other information, to UTSA quarterback Owen McCown before the teams clashed on Nov. 2, 2024. 4 The alleged Instagram DM exchange between Tahj Ra-El and Owen McCown. @On3sports/X 4 Former Memphis DB Tahj Ra-El. purduesports In the alleged exchange, Ra-El sent the playbook and wrote, 'Here you go,' and 'That's all the signals,' with McCown responding with laughing emojis. 'We're on the field, and their offense has a check for every single one of our defenses' checks,' a member of the Tigers' 2024 team told Tiger Sports Report.
