Riverside firefighter injured after car crashes into fire engine on 60 Freeway
It happened a little before 6 p.m. on eastbound lanes of the freeway near Day Street, according to a post on Facebook from the Riverside Fire Department.
Six engine crews were in the area after they were called for reports of a fire burning in medium vegetation next to the freeway off-ramp. The engines were partially blocked from traffic by California Highway Patrol vehicles as they were parked along lanes.
"During the fire suppression operations, a passenger vehicle impacted an engine company and struck the engine operator at the pump panel," the department said.
The firefighter was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment on moderate injuries. They are said to be recovering as of Tuesday.
The driver of the vehicle that crashed into the engine was not injured. They were questioned at the scene by CHP officers but no arrests were made.
It's unclear what caused the collision.
Firefighters say that the fire was contained less than an hour after they arrived at the scene. The cause of the blaze is also under investigation.

Austin man charged with domestic assault
Jul. 3—An Owatonna man has been charged with domestic assault following an altercation Wednesday afternoon in Austin. Joshua Scott Sexter, 23, was charged with felony domestic assault by strangulation and gross misdemeanor domestic assault in Mower County District Court Thursday. According to the court complaint, Sexter allegedly assaulted a woman he is in a relationship with and that during the altercation allegedly choked her twice from behind. Both times she was able to escape by pinching his arm. The complaint states that Austin Police Department officers were dispatched to the incident at just before 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2. When officers talked with the victim, she stated that she and Sexter started arguing around 3:30 p.m. in the afternoon before Sexter left the house, picking up again after he returned back to the residence. One of the officers observed a small scratch just below the chin of the victim with some redness on the left side of her neck. There was also a scratch on her left cheek, just above her mouth and another on her nose. When he was questioned, Sexter denied the assault and noted that tensions were high due to money issues, however, he also said "there was an altercation and the kid was crying." Sexter is slated for an initial appearance on July 17.

Democratic lawmakers denied entry to Alligator Alcatraz immigration detention site
A group of Florida Democratic state lawmakers was blocked from entering the Alligator Alcatraz immigrant detention facility in the Everglades Thursday, despite citing legal authority for an official legislative site visit. Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried issued a statement following the incident, saying, "Lawmakers on the ground were just blocked from entering a state-funded detention site because of so-called 'safety concerns.' This is a taxpayer-funded facility, run by the State of Florida. Our elected officials have every legal right to walk through those gates." Fried added, "What are Ron DeSantis and his administration trying to hide? If it's unsafe for lawmakers to visit, how is it safe for anyone inside?" Under President Trump's leadership, we are working at turbo speed on cost-effective and innovative ways to deliver on the American people's mandate for mass deportations of criminal illegal aliens," said Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. "We will expand facilities and bed space in just days, thanks to our partnership with Florida." The facility, located at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, is expected to house up to thousands when fully operational. Built in just eight days across 10 miles of Everglades terrain, the center includes more than 200 security cameras, over 28,000 feet of barbed wire and 400 security personnel, according to state officials.

62-year-old man arrested for wife's death in San Marino
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arrested a San Marino man after he allegedly killed his wife in January. Deputies identified the man as 62-year-old Yoon Lai. He's being held on a no-bail warrant until investigators present their case to the LA County District Attorney's Office on Tuesday, July 8. The San Marino Fire Department found Lai's wife, 56-year-old Irene Gaw-Lai, dead inside the couple's home in the 2000 block of Lorain Road on Jan. 6. After serving 25 search warrants, deputies obtained an arrest warrant for Lai and apprehended him at his home in San Gabriel on Thursday, according to the LASD Homicide Bureau. Detectives did not elaborate on the motive behind the alleged killing.
