The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has been organising demonstrations to protest against the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025 in several parts of the country, including in Hyderabad, for several weeks.
The Board has sought to include women, and people belonging to other faiths in the protests, even as its president Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, in an exclusive interview with The Hindu, asserts that their struggle is not against Hindus, but against the government which is trying to wrest lands and properties from the control of Muslims.

SC turns down plea for exclusive control of Mahabodhi temple to Buddhists

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea that sought handing over exclusive control of the Mahabodhi temple in Bihar's Bodh Gaya to Buddhists, and asked the petitioner to approach the high court. The Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya, Bihar. (File Photo) The plea, filed by lawyer and former Maharashtra minister Sulekha Narayan Kumbhare, challenged the constitutional validity of the Bodh Gaya Temple Act, 1949, which entrusted a nine-member committee with the temple's management, of which a majority are Hindus. Refusing to entertain the petition, a bench of justices MM Sundresh and K Vinod Chandran, said, 'How can we issue mandamus? You please approach the high court. This is not maintainable under Article 32.' The petition claimed that the management of the Mahabodhi temple should be with the Buddhists and the Act was unconstitutional for violating the right of Buddhists to profess their religion and manage their religious institutions. 'Inclusion of members in the committee who are non-Buddhists i.e. Hindus is violative of protections guaranteed to the Buddhist citizens of India and the Lord Buddha himself guaranteed under Articles 19 (right to fundamental freedoms), 21 (life and liberty), 25 (freedom of religion), 26 (right to administer institutions), 28 and 29 (minority rights) of the Constitution of India,' the petition stated. Senior advocate Ravindra Laxman Khapre pointed out that due to mismanagement and indifference to the temple, the sacred Bodhi tree at the site is in danger of decay, as found out by a committee of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The bench dismissed the petition allowing the petitioner to raise these issues before the high court. 'We are not inclined to entertain the petition. Liberty is granted to approach the high court.' While the definition of Hindus includes Buddhists as well, the religious community was recognised as a minority in 1993 under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992. The petition, filed by advocate Jaydip Pati stated that the Mahabodhi temple is the holiest Buddhist shrine in India and is also a World Heritage site since the year 2002, which is not under the exclusive management of Buddhists. It said, 'Though Buddhists are defined as being part of Hindus, their independent right to profess their religion is also recognized. The said recognition therefore confers rights of Buddhists to profess their religion as per their own choice.' The petitioner argued that the surroundings and vicinity of the area, including the area of the temple, which is now under the possession of the Bodh Gaya Temple Committee used to be under control of Lord Buddha. 'In effect, the idol of Lord Buddha is the owner of the land. It is therefore submitted that the ownership of the site is vested in Lord Buddha as a juristic person.'

Telangana MLA T Raja Singh quits BJP, objects to appointment of new state party chief

Telangana MLA T Raja Singh on Monday resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party, expressing 'shock and disappointment' at media reports saying that former Member of Legislative Council N Ramachander Rao was set to be the next state party chief. Singh, the MLA from the Goshamahal constituency in Hyderabad, said in a letter to current Telangana BJP chief G Kishan Reddy that the decision disappointed 'lakhs of karyakartas, leaders and voters who have stood by the party through every high and low'. He said that some individuals, driven by personal interest, appeared to have misled the BJP's central leadership, and claimed that this risked causing avoidable setbacks to the party. 'This is not about personal ambition, this letter reflects the pain and frustration of lakhs of loyal BJP karyakartas and supporters who feel sidelines and unheard,' Singh said. The Goshamahal MLA, however, said he remained committed to the ideology of Hindutva, and that he would 'continue to raise my voice and stand with the Hindu community with even greater strength'. The silence of many should not be mistaken for agreement. I speak not just for myself, but for countless karyakartas and voters who stood with us with faith, and who today feel let down. Jai Shri Ram 🚩 — Raja Singh (@TigerRajaSingh) June 30, 2025 Singh has frequently made inflammatory remarks targeting Muslims and has been booked in several criminal cases. In August 2022, he was briefly arrested for allegedly making disparaging remarks about Prophet Muhammad. However, the court had ordered his release, saying that the police did not follow proper procedure during his arrest. The BJP suspended Singh for the remarks in August 2022, but reinstated him in October 2023. On December 3, 2023, he went on to win his third term as an MLA from Goshamahal. Even when he was suspended from the party, Singh had engaged in hate speech against Muslims multiple times. In January 2023, the MLA urged Hindu women not to befriend women who wear the burqa. The MLA insinuated that Hindus now face danger from Muslim men as well as women as he said: 'There was a time when we faced danger from Aftab, but now there is danger from Ayesha as well. It is this Ayesha that introduces [Hindu women] to Aftab.' In March, Singh was once again booked making inflammatory remarks against Muslims during an event in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district. At the event, held on March 10, Singh had made derogatory references towards Muslims and also claimed that India will be declared a Hindu nation by 2026. At another rally in March organised to support the renaming of the city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra, Singh had asked Hindus to take action if they find cases of 'love jihad'. The city was officially renamed as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar in September.

"They want to convert 'Samajwad' into 'Namazwad'": BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi rips apart INDIA bloc over Waqf Bill protests

New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the INDIA bloc, stating they want to convert 'Samajwad' into 'Namazwad'. The BJP addressed a press conference in New Delhi, referring to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav's recent comments on the Waqf Amendment Act. The BJP leader termed RJD and Congress as 'Namazwadi' parties and stated that the people of Bihar have two options at present. 'These socialists don't even care about minorities. By bowing down before the Mullahs and Maulavis, they want to convert 'Samajwad' into 'Namazwad'...'Pakke Namazwadi hai, RJD ho ya Congress. I want to say to people of Bihar that there are two options', Sudhanshu Trivedi said. Furthermore, Sudhanshu Trivedi asked whether the INDIA bloc wants to implement 'Sharia Law' in Bihar and mentioned that they will try to implement the 'Sharia Law' in the state once they come to power. 'I want to ask the INDI alliance, are you thinking of implementing Sharia law in Bihar, which is bigger than Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey and ISIS?. The INDI alliance, which will try to implement Sharia through the back door if it comes to power, and on the other side, our government, which will remain committed to protecting Baba Saheb's constitution', the BJP MP said. Sudhanshu Trivedi revealed that there is no mention of the word 'Waqf' in 'Quran'. He stated that the opposition wants to make 'fun' of the constitution written by Dr BR Ambedkar and want to convert it into a 'maulvi script'. 'There is no word called Waqf in the Quran. This is the creation of Mullah, Maulavi. In the Quran, it is said that you should spend as much as you can. Do not hold. They want to make fun of Baba Saheb's constitution and convert it into a Maulvi script', Sudhanshu Trivedi said. Reiterating his claim that the INDIA bloc will implement the 'Sharia Law' in Bihar once they come to power, Sudhanshu Trivedi remembered the Shah Bano Case. He asserted that Congress, which is leading the INDI bloc, 'overruled' Supreme Court's judgement on the Shah Bano case and put 'Sharia above the Constitution'. 'Today, parties like the RJD and the Samajwadi Party are in favour of 'Namazvad'. If their government comes, which is not going to come, then they will throw Baba Saheb Ambedkar's constitution in the dustbin and implement Sharia law. 400 seats have been crossed only once in India's history, that in 1985. The Congress, which is leading the INDI alliance, overruled the Supreme Court's decision on Shah Bano in the Parliament and put Sharia above the Constitution', he said. (ANI)
