Liberty coach Sandy Brondello eager to work with Caitlin Clark as injury threatens All-Star appearance
Speaking to the media before Wednesday night's dominant win over the Fever, Brondello lamented that Clark was ruled out of the game after she suffered a groin injury during Indiana's game on Tuesday.
"You never want to see a player get injured... She's a great player. It would have been good for our crowd to see her, but hopefully they get to see it after post All-Star – you get to play them again," Brondello said of Tuesday's matchup between the Liberty and Fever.
"As for the All-Star, I'm excited to get to know her a little bit. I think that's the part of the All-Star, is going to coach players that you haven't coached before and get to know them a little bit and enjoy the whole celebration."
Clark, who won the fan vote, was paired up with the coach with the best record – Brondello.
She was named a captain in her second All-Star appearance and was also set to compete in her first 3-point contest. But another injury has put all that in jeopardy.
Fever head coach Stephanie White said there have been "no discussions" with regards to the All-Star weekend.
"No discussion yet about this weekend," White told reporters before Wednesday's game. "There was imaging done and obviously, we're ruling her out for tonight, but there hasn't been any discussion beyond tonight."
Clark is dealing with her second groin injury of the year. White said she does not believe that Clark's latest injury is the same as her previous one. Clark also missed five games early in the season because of a quad injury.
"I'm not really sure that it's a re-injury as much as a different kind of injury. I know oftentimes when you're working with injuries in the groin and the quad and the hamstring and all of those things, there's just – they're all kind of tied together and it's not always just one thing."
The Fever will host the All-Star weekend beginning on Friday.

The 30-year-old Tellez has a .232 average with 116 homers and 346 RBIs with four teams since his big league debut with Toronto in 2018. He has played for Milwaukee and Pittsburgh before signing with the Mariners as a free agent in February. Texas got Burger in a trade from Miami in December . After he hit .190 with three homers and a team-high 32 strikeouts in 100 at-bats his first 30 games, the Rangers sent him briefly to Triple-A Round Rock. Damian Lillard returns to the Trail Blazers on a 3-year deal worth $42 million, AP source says
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Damian Lillard is back where he started. Lillard signed a three-year deal worth $42 million to return to the Portland Trail Blazers, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Thursday. The person spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not been officially announced. ESPN first reported the deal. Lillard was the sixth pick in the 2012 NBA draft by the Trail Blazers and spent 11 seasons with Portland before he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks just before the 2023-24 season. The 35-year-old tore his left Achilles tendon during a first-round NBA playoff series against the Indiana Pacers and required surgery. The Bucks waived him earlier this month and stretched the remaining $113 million on his contract. This past season with the Bucks, Lillard ranked 10th in the league in scoring (24.9) and assists (7.1) while earning his ninth All-Star Game selection. Lillard posted a video to his Instagram on Thursday of the Trail Blazers' locker room, ending with a frame of a locker labeled with his name, followed by the words 'Together Again.' He wrote 'RipCityyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!' Lillard averaged 32.2 points his final season in Portland. WNBA players call league's current proposal 'unsustainable,' stay 'committed to the fight' for better CBA
The WNBA players union and league officials had a face-to-face meeting on Thursday in Indianapolis regarding a new collective bargaining agreement. However, the meeting did not result in the two sides getting any closer to a new deal. "The WNBA's response to our proposals fails to address the priorities we've voiced from the day we opted out," said a statement issued by the WNBPA, "a transformational CBA that delivers our rightful share of the business that we've built, improves working conditions, and ensures the success we create lifts both today's players and the generation that follow." "We've told the League and teams exactly why their proposal falls so short," the statement continued. "This business is booming — media rights, ratings, revenue, team valuations, expansion fees, attendance, and ticket sales — are all up in historic fashion. "But shortchanging the working women who make this business possible stalls growth. The only thing more unsustainable than the current system is pretending it can go on forever." The statement ended by saying "We are committed to the fight" and that the players were "committed to returning to the negotiating table." This story will be updated.
