HC asks Maha to decide plea seeking permission for Eid prayer
A vacation bench of justices Neela Gokhale and Manjusha Deshpande gave direction in response to a petition moved by Umer Abdul Jabbar Gopalani, challenging the local Gamdevi police decision refusing to grant permission, citing law and order and traffic congestion issues.
In his petition Goplani said the fire and traffic departments had granted an NOC whereas the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked it to get another NOC from the directorate of archaeology and museum; and thereafter it said it will consider the application.
He also argued that the namaz has been performed at the Maidan for over 50 years without any incidents and if the permission is granted to the petitioner, the petitioner will take all necessary precautions to avoid law and order situation.
The state government represented by public prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar objected and clarified that both agencies had only issued conditional clearances.
He also said that the police's decision was based partly on the refusal of permission in 2024.
However, the petitioner argued that no valid reason had been provided in last year's refusal and that precedent alone could not justify rejection in 2025.

Washington/New Delhi, July 2 (UNI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth during which they discussed advancing the bilateral defence partnership and building on growing convergences and capabilities. In a post on X, the EAM said: 'Great to meet @SecDef Pete Hegseth in Washington DC today. 'Had a productive conversation on advancing the India-US defence partnership, building on growing convergences of interests, capabilities and responsibilities.' A US Department of Defense readout, said the two met at the Pentagon, 'to discuss the close cooperation between the two countries, weapons sales and the upcoming signing of the framework for the new defense partnership." Almost right at the beginning of the administration, President [Donald J.] Trump and Prime Minister Shri [Narendra] Modi set a strong foundation for our relationship, which we're building on here today: productive, pragmatic and realistic," Hegseth said. "And our nations boast a rich and growing history of cooperation driven by a shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific." The secretary said both the U.S. and India are mutually aware of the security concerns in the region, and both nations have the ability to counter that threat together. He also touched on U.S. efforts to provide India with the tools needed to counter threats in the Indo-Pacific region. "The United States is very pleased with the successful integration of many U.S. defense items into India's inventory," Hegseth said. "And building on this progress, we hope we can complete several major pending U.S. defense sales to India, expand our shared defense industrial cooperation and coproduction efforts, strengthen interoperability ... between our forces, and then formally sign a new 10-year Framework for the U.S.-India Major Defense Partnership ... which we hope to do very soon." During a meeting in February between Trump and Modi, the two leaders announced plans to pursue new procurements and coproduction arrangements for Javelin antitank guided missiles and Stryker armored vehicles. Also discussed was procurement for six additional P-8I maritime patrol aircraft. India has already integrated into its own military weapons, such as the C‑130J Super Hercules, C‑17 Globemaster III and P‑8I Poseidon aircraft, as well as the CH‑47F Chinook, MH‑60R Sea Hawk and AH‑64E Apache. India also utilizes the Harpoon antiship missiles, M777 howitzers and MQ‑9B Sky Guardians. Also in February, President Trump and PM Modi pledged to increase military cooperation with enhanced training, exercises and operations. Hegseth and Jaishankar discussed participation in the next India-U.S. Defense Acceleration Ecosystem Summit, where the two nations will continue to build on U.S.-India defense industrial cooperation and produce new innovations in technology and manufacturing. "We're eager to work alongside you to realize our shared goals," Hegseth said. "They're deep and ongoing." Jaishankar said India's relationship with the U.S. is already strong, but more can be done. "We believe that our defense partnership is today truly one of the most consequential pillars of the relationship. New Delhi, July 2 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today embarked on a five-nation visit to Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia from July 2 to 9, during which he will be attending various bilateral, multilateral and other programmes, especially the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. In a post on X, the PM said he is looking forward to interacting with world leaders and discussing ways to make our planet better. 'On 3rd and 4th July, I will be in Trinidad & Tobago, a nation with whom India shares historical linkages. G7 Foreign Ministers reaffirm support for Israel, say Iran can never have nuclear weapons
The Hague, July 1 (UNI) G-7 Foreign Ministers have reaffirmed their support for Israel and asserted that Iran can never have nuclear weapons. The G7 Foreign Ministers in their meeting at The Hague said in a Joint Statement that Israel has a right to defend itself and urged Iran to refrain from reconstituting its enrichment activities. They called for resumption of negotiations resulting in a comprehensive, verifiable and durable agreement that addresses Iran's nuclear programme. For a "sustainable and credible resolution, we call on Iran to urgently resume full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as required by its safeguards obligations and provide the IAEA with verifiable information about all nuclear material in Iran, including by providing access to IAEA inspectors. We condemn calls in Iran for the arrest and execution of IAEA Director General Grossi." The Foreign Ministers underscored the centrality of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as the cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and said it is essential that Iran remains party to and fully implements its obligations under the Treaty. Iran has already announced its decision to withdraw from the IAEA and expressed lack of faith in NPT. ''We reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context, we reaffirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel.'' Reiterating support for the ceasefire between Israel and Iran, the G7 Foreign Ministers urged all parties to avoid actions that could further destabilize the region. They appreciated Qatar's role in facilitating the ceasefire and expressed solidarity with Qatar and Iraq following the recent strikes by Iran and its proxies and partners against their territory.
