For decades, gender parity in the workplace has been the subject of discussion, debate, and data. But despite years of targeted initiatives, executive pledges, and shifting public discourse, women remain underrepresented in senior roles across most industries - particularly in science and technology. One executive who has seen both the limitations and the potential of change from inside the C-suite is Tara McGeehan, President of CGI UK and Australia, a London based global IT and business consulting services firm.
"Throughout my career, I have learnt that as women, we often subconsciously put limitations on ourselves for a variety of reasons," she says. "I have also learnt that sometimes limitations are put upon us outside of our comprehension or ability to control." These barriers - both internal and systemic - remain a defining feature of the female professional experience. Yet McGeehan argues that meaningful progress begins with the choices made at the very outset of a woman's career, specifically, where and with whom she chooses to work.
"For women looking to start a career, it is important to work for a company that emulates and reflects your values," she advises. "Does it already employ role models you can look up to and learn from? Will it inspire you? Can you see yourself thriving and developing in your career there?"
McGeehan advocates for a level of scrutiny on employers that is often reserved for applicants. In an increasingly talent-led labour market, she believes candidates should feel empowered to ask hard questions. "Ask yourself these questions or better still, ask them at the interview stage and see if it's the right fit for you. You want to work in a comfortable, supportive, and inclusive environment that supports you in your growth and success."
The ability to thrive in such an environment, she notes, is also tied to confidence and communication. Speaking up, particularly early in one's career, can be a challenge. But for McGeehan, it is essential. "Once you have secured your first role, I'd encourage you to share your thoughts and ideas. Diverse talent creates diverse ideas. This, in turn, pushes boundaries and innovation."
Innovation, she suggests, is not the product of a singular vision, but of collective input from across levels and backgrounds. "It's important to have strong female voices across the whole business, be it those in leadership positions or those in their first professional role."
Despite improvements in representation, McGeehan remains clear-eyed about the distance still to go. "There's still a long way to go in tackling the glass ceiling, and so none of us, regardless of our role, can afford to let up in our efforts to make our industry as diverse, equitable, and inclusive as it absolutely must be."
That sense of shared responsibility - at all levels - is a consistent theme in her commentary. While individual advancement is important, collective advocacy remains central to progress. So too does ambition, often viewed with discomfort or suspicion when expressed by women in the workplace. McGeehan is unequivocal: such ambition is not only acceptable, it is necessary.
"My final piece of advice is that it's okay to aspire to a successful career as a woman," she says. "If you have the ambition and the drive, and are working with a company that embraces this, there's no reason why you shouldn't achieve it."
Her words suggest a quiet but resolute optimism: that change is possible, but not inevitable. It must be built - consciously, collaboratively, and continuously.

Airport staff have been earning cash bonuses for every easyJet passenger they spot travelling with oversized cabin bags, according to a leaked email. An internal email seen by The Sunday Times has revealed that staff at Swissport, an aviation company that provides ground handling services, were told they were 'eligible to receive £1.20 (£1 after tax) for every gate bag taken, effective immediately'. The email was reportedly sent to Swissport employees working at seven airports across the UK in Belfast, Birmingham, Glasgow, Jersey, Liverpool and Newcastle. The cash bonuses were introduced to staff as the easyJet gate bag revenue incentive, which is 'intended to reward agents doing the right thing' and would result in 'payments made directly to employees'. The email was sent in November 2023, with The Sunday Times stating that the policy is still in force. The message was signed off by Dean Martin, a Swissport station manager at Glasgow Airport, who said: 'Thank you for your ongoing contribution to the success of easyJet.' Other ground handling companies, such as DHL Supply Chain, also have similar remuneration packages for identifying easyJet bags that do not comply with easyJet's dimensions. DHL Supply Chain, which operates at Gatwick, Bristol and Manchester airports, receives a 'nominal amount' per bag, the publication states. The extra cash incentive applies to bags that are deemed too big to the taken into the cabin, either because the passenger has not paid to take a larger suitcase or their free hand luggage is too big. If a passenger's cabin bags or non-purchased bags are brought to the gate, easyJet will charge £48 and place the bags in the hold. Strict airline baggage rules across various airlines have caused contention at the gate, especially when passengers are handed hefty fees if staff deem their bags noncompliant with their policies. The Sunday Times says that £1.20 of this fee will be paid to the ground handler. Ground handling agents are employed by third parties, which vary from airport to airport. They manage agent remuneration directly, and easyJet do not have oversight on this. Swissport ground handlers earn around £12 per hour. One former Swissport passenger service manager told a publication that he and his colleagues had no choice but to keep a check on oversized baggage. 'Confronting people with excess baggage is like taking on fare dodgers,' he told The Sunday Times on the condition of anonymity. 'You risk abuse or worse — imagine stopping a group of lads on a stag weekend and telling them, 'I'm going to have to charge you more than you paid for your tickets to check those bags into the hold'.' A spokesperson for Swissport told The Independent: 'We serve our airline customers and apply their policies under terms and conditions for managing their operation. 'We're highly professional and our focus is on delivering safe and efficient operations, which we do day in and day out for four million flights per year.' A spokesperson for DHL Supply Chain also told The Independent: "We're fully committed to ensuring the safety, security, and on-time departure of all aircraft. A critical component of this is adherence to the easyJet Baggage Policy, which plays a vital role in maintaining an efficient operation as well as passenger safety.' The company requires 'all colleagues to consistently adhere to [the easyJet baggage policy] and this is recognised as part of their remuneration'. 'Doing so ensures we provide a smooth travel experience for every passenger.' EasyJet said it is 'focused on ensuring our ground handling partners apply our policies correctly and consistently in fairness to all our customers'. 'Our bag policies and options are well understood and we remind customers of this when booking, before they travel and on their boarding pass, which means a very small proportion of customers who don't comply will be charged at the airport,' the spokesperson told The Independent.

General Atlantic considers Joe & The Juice US IPO in 2026

Private equity firm General Atlantic is considering a US initial public offering (IPO) of Joe & The Juice, potentially as early as 2026, Bloomberg has reported. Joe & The Juice, a juice and coffee chain founded in 2002, operated 363 locations worldwide at the end of 2023. Its offerings include freshly prepared juices, shakes, sandwiches and coffee made with natural and organic ingredients sourced directly from growers. Sources, who requested anonymity as the information is not public, stated that General Atlantic has been in discussions with prospective advisers regarding the listing. A first-time share sale is expected to value Joe & The Juice at €2bn ($2.4bn). The private equity firm may select banks for this offering later in 2025, although deliberations are ongoing and details of the IPO could still change. General Atlantic first invested in Joe & The Juice in 2016 and acquired a majority stake in 2023 from Valedo Partners. In December, the brand strengthened its partnership with Deliveroo by entering an exclusive partnership for the UK market. The collaboration enabled Deliveroo customers to order the full menu for on-demand delivery in Birmingham, Brighton, Greater London, Kent, Liverpool and Oxford. Joe & the Juice and Deliveroo first entered a partnership in 2019, covering only five UK sites. They have since expanded their collaboration to 65 locations. The partnership supports Joe & the Juice's expansion plans, which include hundreds of new sites across the UK regions and London.
