EastEnders star Laura Doddington reveals she nearly quit acting for a VERY different career path before landing her role on the soap

Daily Mail29-05-2025
She's become one of the soap's breakout stars, with a nomination for Best Newcomer at this year's British Soap Awards.
But EastEnders star Laura Doddington has revealed that she came close to quitting her 22-year acting career, before she landed her role on the soap.
The actress, 44, has fast become a fan favourite as Nicola Mitchell in the BBC soap, with her character's historic affair causing huge fireworks in Albert Square this week.
Speaking to The Mirror, Laura shared that she was considering changing her career before she landed her breakout soap part.
She said: 'The industry is hard at the moment. Before this audition came through, I'd been looking at retraining to do something else, I've got a young kid. And that makes you think about their future and stability for them.'

Despite roles in Doctors, Holby City and Casualty, as well as work on the stage, Laura shared that she debated training as a hairdresser before the Walford role came along.
Having previously starred in Doctors, Holby City and Casualty as well as on the stage - the lead role Laura had hoped for just wasn't coming.
She added: 'I cut my son's hair and I'm sort of reasonably good at it, so I thought that might be an option. I was in Prime Suspect when I was in my 20s and The Midwich Cuckoos, but they weren't massive parts. I was beginning to think it might not be possible to have that lead role.'
Laura landed her role as Nicola just nine months ago, and already she's made a huge splash and become a fan favourite.
The actress added: 'Unfortunately in this industry when you get to over the age of about 35 and you haven't made a name for yourself, the interesting roles sort of start drying up. It's just the way that it is and the way the world is a little bit.
'That's why I love soaps and continuing dramas as they champion individuals of all ages and put characters at the heart of storytelling.'
The new Mitchell clan made a dramatic arrival in Walford, with Teddy and his sons Harry and Barney revealed to be Stevie's secret family.
Nicola then arrived in Walford later in the year, having been in prison for injecting unlicensed filler.
In tense scenes earlier this month, Nicola confessed she'd killed Harry's girlfriend Shireen, in a bid to hide that Zack Hudson is actually Barney's real father.
After the parternity bombshell came to light, Harry kidnapped Zack to prevent him from telling Barney, and they crashed into a lake.
In Thursday's upcoming episode, Zack is still missing and feared dead.
Laura is set to grace the red carpet for this year's Soap Awards, after landing a nomination for Best Newcomer opposite Jacob Roberts as Corrie's Kit Green, Emmerdale's Shebz Miah as Kammy Hadiq and Hollyoaks star Isabelle Smith as Frankie Osborne.
The glitzy event will be returning to London to Hackney Empire, after previously taking place in Manchester, and will once again be hosted by Jane McDonald as it returns following a surprise hiatus last year.
As always, the numerous accolades will be presented by an array of well-known faces from across the TV and showbiz world, with the TV event broadcasting a few days later in a primetime slot.
The ceremony will celebrate a mammoth year in soaps looking back on 12 months of murder, mystery, make-ups, break ups, trials, tribulations and tears.
Meanwhile Hollyoaks leapt a year into the future and in Emmerdale a dramatic limousine crash into a frozen lake left viewers stunned.

BBC drama leaves viewers 'destroyed' as they watch all 5 episodes at once

BBC's The Narrow Road to the Deep North has become a word-of-mouth hit with viewers, with many saying the war drama is 'terrifying and moving to the soul' A gripping new BBC drama is leaving viewers absolutely stunned, with countless fans confessing they've devoured all five episodes in one go. ‌ The Narrow Road to the Deep North, adapted from Richard Flanagan's Booker Prize-winning novel, has emerged as an unexpected sensation since landing on BBC iPlayer, with audiences hailing it as one of the most heart-wrenching and memorable programmes of the year. ‌ Featuring Saltburn's Jacob Elordi and Belfast's Ciarán Hinds portraying younger and older incarnations of Australian surgeon Dorrigo Evans, the programme sweeps across generations - from a forbidden romance before the conflict, through the harsh realities of Japanese captivity, to the enduring consequences of psychological wounds. ‌ The five-episode series hasn't merely won over critics - securing a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes - it's absolutely devastated audiences. One viewer commented on Google's review platform: "Watched all 5 episodes in one evening. Very good series. War and love. Great acting, lovely soundtrack and a glimpse into the pain and suffering of WW2 and letting go of the love of your life.", reports the Express. ‌ Another said: "An outstanding series. Not an easy watch, but well worth it." The emotional impact has been overwhelming, with numerous viewers revealing the series reduced them to tears. One admirer shared: "This series just destroyed me. I still cannot think about it without crying. Every moment, and every character, were compelling... A beautiful show. Highly recommend." ‌ Another added: "There was a lot of human connection in this series and a very horrific scene and some sadness. This movie was interesting throughout and was very well paced. It didn't lose my attention at any point." Narrated through flashbacks, the tale focuses on Dorrigo Evans, who becomes an unwilling war hero following his survival of unthinkable terrors in a Japanese labour camp in Burma. However, it's the romance he abandoned - a clandestine affair with his uncle's spouse, Amy - that torments him most profoundly. ‌ Odessa Young (Manodrome) portrays Amy, alongside Olivia DeJonge (Elvis) as Dorrigo's spouse Ella, and Simon Baker (The Mentalist) as his mate Keith. Elordi and Young have received acclaim for their on-screen rapport, whilst Hinds delivers emotional gravitas to the elder Dorrigo, still tormented by his past. ‌ Elordi disclosed to the BBC how physically demanding the shoot proved, particularly during the prisoner-of-war sequences: "We carried a real tree up the side of a cliff for I don't know how many hours. It was like being in a massive theatre production that was constantly playing." Hinds revealed the novel had captivated him instantly. "It was extraordinary. It was harrowing, heartbreaking, a kind of epic storytelling." Audiences have also commended the series for tackling the grimmer truths of warfare. One Google reviewer described it as "terrifying and moving to the soul," whilst numerous others lauded its cinematography, soundtrack, and emotional resonance. The Narrow Road to the Deep North is presently available to stream in its entirety on BBC iPlayer.

Linda's EastEnders return story 'sealed' as she's 'joined by old face'

Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) may have only just made a temporary EastEnders departure this week, but there's guaranteed drama ahead upon her return. The former pub landlady handed over the keys to her beloved Queen Vic to Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) on Tuesday, deciding to head on a cruise with her children ahead of a fresh start. After a morning of reflection, she knew that the bad times in the boozer outweighed the good times, and it was the right decision to move on. However, before she could put her troubles to one side, she had to address a looming threat that had just arrived in Albert Square – Oscar Branning (Pierre Moullier)! He had no idea that he had another sibling living in the area, as his dad Max (Jake Wood) had fathered Linda's youngest daughter Annie in 2021. And it's not just Oscar who was unaware, as Max has been kept in the dark every since she was the born. Linda knew that she'd have to tell Oscar eventually, and squirmed when he said he would take great joy in watching his dad's face drop. Luckily, after some tough words from his sister Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa), he agreed to keep quiet. Jake's return as the notorious womaniser was officially confirmed earlier this month, with Executive Producer Ben Wadey teasing: 'Whilst his character has only been away from Albert Square for four years, Walford, and the lives of those who live in it, have changed immensely. 'Max has a lot of unfinished business, but whether he is welcomed by his family remains to be seen. 'However, with a past as checkered as Max's, it's fair to say that many Walford residents will not be pleased to see him, putting the Brannings back at the heart of the Square, and the drama, this year.' Max's whereabouts are largely unknown. It's been explicitly stated on a number of occasions that both Oscar and Laurenhave been estranged from him for quite some time. He initially departed for New Zealand, and the last we heard of Max, brother Jack (Scott Maslen) had visited him in France. He then fled to Croatia with granddaughter Abi Jr. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? We're not privy to the stop offs on Linda's cruise, but it's entirely plausible that she may have a run-in with a face from her past while sailing the seas. More Trending Could Max be enjoying a holiday with Abi Jr, when she makes an unexpected friend – Annie – in the kids club? Imagine the reaction if Linda came back to Walford with Max on her arm! Of course, there's always the chance that he might come back prior to her return, and her whereabouts are kept a closely guarded secret. We do know that Jake has reprised the role briefly, before a permanent stint later in the year. View More » Whatever the outcome, it's bound to be dramatic. This is Walford after all.
