India and Brazil set to sign key agreements to boost bilateral trade

India and Brazil, both wary of the tariffs that US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose and looking beyond America for markets for their respective produce, are set to sign almost half a dozen agreements aimed at increasing their bilateral trade during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. India's trade with Brazil is the largest compared to its trade with any other country in Latin America. However, it remains far below Brazil's trade with China, the US, Argentina, and Germany. India-Brazil bilateral trade reached $16.6 billion in 2022-23, but following the drop in oil and gas prices, it is now around $12.2 billion. India enjoys a trade surplus, exporting goods worth $6.7 billion to Brazil and importing goods worth $5.4 billion. Modi and Lula had set a bilateral trade target of $20 billion during their last meeting in November 2024. Brazil is looking to diversify its exports to India beyond sugar and crude oil, which currently dominate sales. Earlier this year, Brazil's Embraer SA, the world's third-largest aircraft manufacturer, set up a subsidiary in India. Brazil is also seeking to expand its market for agricultural and dairy products in India. At a recent event, Lula observed that he only recently discovered that Modi, a devout Hindu, didn't eat meat. Brazil is the world's top beef exporter. 'Our trade relationship is just $12 billion, it's nothing,' Lula said. 'So please, arrange a box of cheese. I want it on the table so he never complains about Brazilian food and, who knows, maybe he'll start buying Brazilian cheese.' Hours before he met the Indian PM in Brasilia for a bilateral meeting on Tuesday evening (India time), Lula joined his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa in criticising Trump for his threat to impose extra tariffs on BRICS member countries. On the final day of the two-day BRICS Summit, which Brazil had hosted, Lula said the US president was 'irresponsible for threatening tariffs on social media.' He also called on world leaders to find ways to reduce international trade's reliance on the dollar. Earlier, South African President Ramaphosa was the first among the BRICS leaders to criticise Trump for his comments, where the US president had warned BRICS members of 10 percent additional tariffs for adopting policies he claimed were 'anti-American.' In their Rio de Janeiro declaration, BRICS members expressed 'serious concerns' over tariffs, condemned soaring defence spending, and denounced airstrikes on BRICS member Iran. However, the group did not mention the US by name. The grouping also tasked its finance ministers and central bank governors to continue discussions on the BRICS Cross-Border Payments Initiative and appreciated the progress made by the BRICS Payment Task Force (BPTF) in identifying possible pathways to support greater interoperability of BRICS payment systems. The effort is aimed at reducing the dominance of the US dollar in international trade. Brazil is also keen to increase its sesame exports to India, which have grown significantly since the Indian market opened to Brazil in 2020. It is also eyeing expanded ethanol exports. In Brasilia, the two countries are expected to sign deals on renewable energy, counterterrorism, cooperation in agricultural research, and agree on a framework to protect confidential information. India is looking to increase its cooperation with Brazil in oil and gas, mining and critical minerals, defence, and security. The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen and diversify bilateral trade, including through the expansion of the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement, as Brazil assumes the chairship of MERCOSUR from July 1, 2025.

China says stand ready to work with India to move bilateral relations: ‘Crucial stage of improvement, development…'

Yu Jing, spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in India on Tuesday said that relations with India are at a crucial stage of improvement and development, with both countries working to move bilateral relations forward on a sound and steady track. 'The China-India relations are at a crucial stage of improvement and development. We stand ready to work with India to move bilateral relations forward on a sound and steady track,' Jing said in a message on X. The Chinese Embassy in India also welcomed the ongoing peace talks between India and Pakistan, emphasising China's commitment to regional stability. Yu stated that China has been closely monitoring the developments and actively promoting dialogue between the two nations. "Over the past weeks and months, China has closely followed the developments between India and Pakistan, actively promoted talks for peace, and worked to maintain regional peace and stability. China welcomes and supports India and Pakistan in properly settling differences and seeking fundamental solutions through dialogue and consultation. China stands ready to continue playing a constructive role to this end," she wrote on X. Amid the growing trade imbalance due to US President Donald Trump's tariff hikes worldwide – India's deficit with China hit $99.2 billion. In the current scenario, China has reached out for economic collaboration. In a recent interview with The Times of India in April this year, Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong said China's intent to welcome premium Indian goods and help Indian businesses tap into China's massive consumer market. The Chinese Ambassador's message signalled a potential shift in the economic dynamics between the two nations despite heightened global trade uncertainty due to Trump tariffs. While China's market presents commercial opportunities for Indian exporters, Xu also urged India to create a more level playing field for Chinese enterprises operating within its borders to foster deeper cooperation. India's trade deficit with China surged to a record level in the fiscal year ended March 31, almost touching the $100 billion-mark, latest government data showed, even as officials fear that the Indian market may see decreasing Chinese goods, with the US slapping a 245 per cent tariff on imports from China. India exported goods worth $14.25 billion to China in 2024-25, a 14.4 per cent dip from $16.66 billion the previous financial year (2023-24), according to detailed trade data released by the commerce ministry. In 2024-25, India imported Chinese merchandise worth $113.45 billion, a 11.5 per cent jump from $101.73 billion imported the previous financial year. The data showed India's imports from China registered a robust double-digit growth while Indian exports to the country contracted, leading to huge trade deficit of $99.2 billion.

Zee shareholders approve appointment of directors

New Delhi: Shareholders of media and entertainment company Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd have approved the appointments of Divya Karani as an independent director and Saurav Adhikari as a non-executive director on the board of the company. While Zee said the approvals reflected shareholders' confidence in the board, proxy advisory firms iAS and SES had recommended against ratifying Adhikari's and Karani's appointments. Zee said its board has been making efforts to enhance its guidance to the management and strengthen the governance framework with policies. 'As part of this approach, the composition of the board is also being enhanced by enlisting experienced members from diverse sectors,' it added. Karani comes with over three decades of experience spearheading advertising and media agencies across India, South Asia, the UK and Asia Pacific. Previously, she served as the CEO of Dentsu Media, South Asia, leading the agency for over 12 years. She currently serves on the Board of Kulfi Collective, a media network that builds brands and studios that function at the intersection of content, commerce and culture, as its chairperson and executive director. Adhikari also comes with over three decades of domain expertise in global businesses and markets across technology, FMCG and consumer durables sectors as an operations, general management and investment specialist. His prior experience includes senior global leadership and executive roles across HCL, Unilever and PepsiCo, amongst others. He is currently the founder and senior partner at Indus Tech Edge Fund I, a growth fund focused on globalizing India's technology ecosystem. Zee's shareholders have been unhappy with the extent of control the promoters have over the company despite their small stake. Following its failed merger with the Indian entertainment business of Japan's Sony Group Corp., Zee has set in motion a turnaround plan to cut costs and double down on growth-focused investments. Zee is developing new business units to expand its audience and augment revenue streams, as per an investor presentation published this month.
