THIS province is the BINGO capital of South Africa

South Africans wagered more than R1 trillion last year. Two-thirds of it was spent on betting, mostly online, on things like sports and horse racing. The money spent on betting has been going up and up since around 2021. The turnover from betting now far surpasses casinos, which used to be the most popular way to gamble in this country. Betting on sports and other contingencies is driving this surge. Half the gross revenue from gambling is from online betting, according to National Gambling Board statistics. 'Gambling has transitioned from a pastime enjoyed by small pockets of society to being a commonplace activity,' notes the National Gambling Authority. The Western Cape and Mpumalanga have reported the steepest rises in gambling revenue. The Western Cape has surged past Gauteng, which four years ago was the top revenue earner, to record more than R5 billion more in revenue than Gauteng in the 2024 financial year. Mpumalanga, recorded nearly the same gross revenue as Gauteng, which is surprising given its much smaller population. In fact, in terms of the amount of money spent on gambling, or turnover, Mpumalanga beat both Gauteng and the Western Cape in the 2024 financial year. Betting on sports and contingencies is the hands-down favourite way to wager in Mpumalanga and the Western Cape. It accounts for 96% of the money spent on gambling in Mpumalanga and 84% in the Western Cape. Casinos are still where the gambling money in Gauteng is spent, recording 77% of the turnover for the 2024 financial year, according to the National Gambling Board. More was spent in casinos in KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and the Eastern Cape. Bingo is popular in North West and the Eastern Cape, where it contributes a quarter of the gambling turnover. But the meteoric rise of betting means it has by far the highest turnover in the country: R761 billion compared with R297 billion for casinos. The government isn't complaining because it collected R4.8 billion from taxes and levies on all that money people spent on gambling in the last financial year. UJ confers celebrated writer Margaret Busby with honorary doctorate

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has conferred an honorary doctorate on Margaret Busby, recognising her trailblazing role as Africa's first black woman publisher and her decades-long contributions to global literature. UJ is the first university on the continent to bestow this honour on Busby, whose extraordinary career has shaped the landscape of pan-African letters, elevated marginalised voices and archived a wealth of intellectual heritage across Africa and its diaspora. After the ceremony, the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS), hosted a celebratory lunch in Busby's honour and brought together leading thinkers, creatives, and cultural stewards. Among the guests were JIAS fellow and former South African ambassador to France and the US Barbara Masekela, ambassador Nozipho January-Bardill, writer and activist Elinor Sisulu, Brand Leadership founder Thebe Ikalafeng, acclaimed author Sue Nyathi, poet and short-story writer Makhosazana Xaba, former South African first lady Zanele Dlamini Mbeki, and broadcaster and producer Brenda Sisane and Kgomotso Matsunyane. Speaking at the event, Prof Victoria Collis-Buthelezi, director of JIAS, reflected on Busby's towering legacy. 'I want to humbly say a few words about Dr Busby and what she means to the world of letters,' Collis-Buthelezi began. 'Had Dr Busby only ever published Daughters of Africa, her 1992 collection of some 200 women from across Africa and its diaspora, she would have done more than enough to be recognised as one of the most significant figures in pan-African letters.' An unparalleled chorus of voices from different genres, centuries and regions came together in that historic anthology. Daughters of Africa was woven together in a tapestry of survival, art and intellectual resistance, from the traditional poetry of anonymous African girls celebrating the customs of girlhood to the rebellious poetry of enslaved poet Phillis Wheatley and Sojourner Truth's well-known rhetorical question Ain't I a Woman? In addition, Busby's collection featured the lyrical reflections of Ellen Kuzwayo and Noni Jabavu, the proto-Afrofuturist fiction of Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins, the scathing character-driven stories of Adelaide Casely-Hayford, and the slave narratives of Mary Prince and Harriet Jacobs.

'The Iron Duke can relax': Pirates supporters hail Appollis coup

Orlando Pirates supporters are celebrating after securing the signing of Oswin Appollis, beating Kaizer Chiefs to the player. The 23-year-old winger was officially announced by the Buccaneers on Wednesday afternoon, following a period of speculation. He will join the Pirates squad as they travel to Spain for their pre-season training in the coming days. Just after introducing eight new players, the Buccaneers made headlines again with the signing of Appollis from Polokwane City. With other quality signings such as Sipho Mbule and Tshepang Moremi, many fans expect the Buccaneers to improve this coming season. The Buccaneers finished runners-up to Mamelodi Sundowns in three consecutive seasons in the league. Some Pirates supporters think Appollis could be the man to take the club to new heights. @TmCiteilife wrote: 'Now that Orlando Pirates has FINALLY signed Oswin Appollis. There might be a chance that we'll be losing our star boy, Rele Mofokeng because there's interest in him. They both play the same position.' 'The Iron Duke can now go to a season-long holiday and enjoy himself while watching the boys from far. He's done,' @SimcelileRubela tweeted. 'Orlando Pirates signed the striker with the most potential in the PSL for me, Oswin Appollis. With the right coaching and good players behind him, the Bafana Bafana international can really reach new heights. Kudos to the Pirates management for this signing,' @JoBertrand19 tweeted.
