3 BritBox shows to watch on HBO Max
From Friday, August 1 through Monday, September 29, U.S.-based HBO Max subscribers will have access to a great selection of BritBox favorites spanning mystery, comedy and drama genres, with titles including 'Sherwood,' 'Luther', 'Silent Witness,' 'The Office,' 'Blue Lights,' 'Shakespeare & Hathaway,' 'Father Brown' and more.
Access will come at no additional cost to HBO Max users, who will be able to find the British gems in a dedicated section of the platform entitled "The Best of British TV by BritBox."
'HBO Max viewers seek premium entertainment they can't get anywhere else. Through this partnership, we are excited to offer them a premium collection of distinctly British series to complement their viewing experience, including acclaimed series, fan-favorite franchises, standout performances from celebrated talent, and exceptional storytelling across mystery, crime, drama, and comedy,' Robert Schildhouse, President, BritBox, said in a statement.Given that you only have a few short weeks to enjoy your BritBox titles, here are three new-to-you series that you should add to your next HBO Max streaming session.
One of the best British shows you can watch on the U.S., the Idris Elba-led British crime thriller 'Luther' will be available to stream on HBO Max, with season 1 on the platform from August 1 to 30, and season 2 available through the month of September.
A Golden Globe-winning Idris Elba plays Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, a brilliant but tortured homicide detective (is there any other kind?) who has a knack for getting inside the minds of serial killers, including the psychopathic murderer Alice Morgan (played by Ruth Wilson), who becomes both his nemesis and unlikely companion. It is unconventional professional methods like that, as well as his own lingering personal demons, that put Luther at odds with his team. Watch 'Luther' on HBO Max now
Long before there was Michael Scott (Steve Carell), Dunder Mifflin's 'World's Best Boss' and protagonist of the U.S. version of 'The Office,' there was David Brent (Ricky Gervais, who also created the comedy alongside Stephen Merchant), the hilariously insufferable manager of the Wernham Hogg paper company.
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.
Like its American remake, the British original follows the relatable, mundane but downright hysterical day-to-day lives of office employees, with a cast that includes Martin Freeman, Mackenzie Crook and Lucy Davis.
The first two seasons of the genre-defining mockumentary, as well as the Christmas special, are available to watch on HBO Max as part of the summertime programming pop-up. Watch 'The Office' on HBO Max now
Seasons 1 and 2 of 'cozy crime' favorite 'Father Brown' will be available to HBO Max subscribers throughout August and September.
Based on the character created by English author G.K. Chesterton (featured in 53 short stories published between 1910 and 1936), the period-piece series centers on the titular Roman Catholic priest slash amateur detective who uses his keen powers of observation and his sacred intuition to solve mysteries and crimes in 1950s-era England.
Along with Mark Williams as the crime-busting clergyman Father Brown, the cast features Sorcha Cusack, Nancy Carroll, Alex Price, John Burton, Jackie Deam and more.

‘And Just Like That' actor wonders if he's to blame for the show ending: ‘Did I just kill' it?
Carrie's love life is to blame. On Friday, Sarah Jessica Parker and 'And Just Like That' showrunner Michael Patrick King made the shocking announcement that the 'Sex and the City' spinoff would abruptly end after Season 3 concludes on Aug 14. Two days later, co-star Jonathan Cake spoke out on Instagram — joking that it's all his fault. Advertisement 'Wait, did i JUST KILL @justlikethatmax ? Duncan finally has one night of passion with Carrie Bradshaw and the shows over…FOREVER???' he wrote in the caption, next to a photo of his character, Duncan, shirtless in bed. 8 Jonathan Cake as Duncan, in the photo he posted on Instagram. He's Carrie's new neighbor who she butted heads with and even texted Samantha (Kim Cattrall) about. But after Carrie struck out on her rekindled romance with Aidan (John Corbett), Duncan became her new love interest. Joking about his own appearance in the shirtless photo, Cake quipped, 'Was it, judging by this picture, his surprisingly small head? Or something else a little underwhelming? Ah Duncan Donuts, i guess America won't run on Duncan, but it was exquisite pleasure while it lasted.' He also tagged fellow stars Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, producer John Melfi, showrunner King and 'the one and only ever' Parker. 'You gave the world SUCH joy for nearly thirty years,' he penned. Thank you for having me on your team for a hot- a very hot- minute. You're all brilliant.' The original show, which aired for six seasons from 1998 to 2004, followed Bradshaw and her friends Samantha Jones (Cattrall), Miranda Hobbes (Nixon) and Charlotte York (Davis) through dating adventures in New York City. The series also spawned two movies in 2008 and 2010, and a spinoff prequel, 'The Carrie Diaries,' which aired on The CW from 2013 to 2014. 'While I was writing the last episode of 'And Just Like That…' season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop,' he continued. I think I have loved her most of all.' Advertisement Ratings had been dwindling for the show, with the Season 3 premiere averaging a paltry 429,000 households during the live-plus-three-day viewership window, according to Forbes. The show has also faced backlash over plot holes, and a hollow attempt to be 'woke.' GC Images It didn't help that the show wasn't on the same page as the audience, as Parker said she was 'shocked' by the fans' negative reaction to Che. The show also faced backlash for killing off Carrie's longtime love, Mr. Big, played by Chris Noth, in the very first episode. He suffered a heart attack following a Peloton ride. Advertisement One fan wrote on X, 'Me trying to process that Big died in the first ep of 'Sex and the City' reboot. Can Carrie never be happy or?? We literally went through 6 seasons and 2 films of pain, drama & happy endings now this?! I'mma pretend this show never existed for my own happiness.' Big's death prompted the brand's stock to drop as it scrambled to recover after sexual assault allegations emerged against Noth just days after the Season 1 premiere. Sources told Page Six the series was likely cut because — like Bradshaw's clothing budget — its spending habits were too high. The final episode airs Aug. 14 on HBO Max.

Princess Charlotte Is 'Quite a Strong Character' at 10—Here's What to Know About Her
THE RUNDOWN Princess Charlotte is the only daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and third in line to the throne. She became the first royal girl in British history to retain her place in the line of succession after the birth of a younger brother. Now 10 years old, the young royal is known for her confidence, poise, and playful personality. She shares a close bond with her brothers, Prince George and Prince Louis, and often appears alongside her parents at public events. Here's everything to know about Charlotte. Charlotte was born on May 2, 2015, at St. Mary's Hospital in London. Kensington Palace confirmed the news, sharing, 'Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.' Later that day, the Prince and Princess of Wales introduced their daughter to the world from the hospital steps. Charlotte's full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, honoring both Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana. She was named Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge at birth. The name 'Charlotte' is also the feminine form of 'Charles,' a nod to her grandfather, King Charles III. Charlotte is affectionately called 'Lottie' by her family. During a 2019 visit to Windsor Park stadium in Northern Ireland, Kate met Belfast blogger Laura-Ann and her young son, George. When Laura-Ann mentioned that her older son was four, Kate responded, 'Oh, he's the same age as Lottie,' revealing Charlotte's nickname. The young princess also refers to her father as 'Papa,' as revealed in a Mother's Day card she wrote to Princess Diana: 'Dear Granny Diana, I am thinking of you on Mother's Day. I love you very much. Papa is missing you. Lots of love, Charlotte.' In November 2024, William was photographed wearing a blue beaded bracelet with the word 'Papa' on it. The bracelet, reportedly made by Charlotte, signaled their close relationship. Charlotte has been described by multiple sources and family members as confident, talkative, and self-assured. A source close to the royal household told People in May 2025, 'She is quite a strong character—almost wise beyond her years.' 'It's truly her personality—it's not forced,' childrenswear designer Amaia Arrieta added. 'She looks very confident and at ease with herself and the environment she's in. The maturity that comes with that responsibility—she seems to nail it every time.' During a conversation with a fellow mother, Samantha Burge, in March 2017, Kate was described as saying, 'Charlotte is growing up really fast. She is the one in charge,' according to Burge, who later spoke to reporters, per People. She added, '[Kate said] they are both becoming really good friends, George and Charlotte.' A source told People in January 2018 that Charlotte is 'so polite, but also fun and energetic,' adding, 'She's very sweet and very confident—she's always chatting away.' Travis Kelce shared his impression of meeting her with Taylor Swift at the 2024 Eras Tour in London, saying, 'She was a superstar.' His brother Jason added, 'She was so adorable. Like, I cannot.' Charlotte has a wide range of hobbies. She plays several sports, including soccer, rugby, and gymnastics. She has also taken dance lessons. 'My daughter Charlotte likes dancing, she loves ballet and tap,' Kate told a young fan named Emily during a 2023 appearance in Yorkshire. For Charlotte's 8th birthday in 2023, her mother took her to see Cinderella at the Royal Opera House. During an appearance on the The Good, The Bad & The Rugby podcast in 2023, Kate also revealed that 'Charlotte's playing both the sports now,' referring to rugby and football, and added that 'it's really good to see youngsters, particularly girls, playing these types of sports now.' While visiting Galway in 2020, Kate told tightrope performers: 'Charlotte is really into gymnastics, she's doing cartwheels, handstands, everything. It's so good for their basic skills of balance and coordination.' Charlotte also enjoys horseback riding and was gifted a horseshoe brooch by Queen Elizabeth II, which she wore to the monarch's funeral. Charlotte likes spending time in the kitchen, too. During a 2019 visit to Lavender Primary School, Kate told students, 'Charlotte loves olives,' and explained that her kids frequently cook with her. Matthew Kleiner-Mann, CEO of the Ivy Learning Trust, recalled Kate 'telling us how much her children love cooking and how they cook for her.' He added, 'One stirs the flour, one puts the milk and butter in, and they make salads and stuff.' Charlotte currently attends Lambrook School in Berkshire alongside her brothers. In a press release from Kensington Palace, the Prince and Princess of Wales said: 'Their Royal Highnesses are hugely grateful to Thomas's Battersea where George and Charlotte have had a happy start to their education since 2017 and 2019 respectively and are pleased to have found a school for all three of their children which shares a similar ethos and values.' Charlotte has been part of royal life from a young age. She made her royal tour debut in 2016, joining her parents and brother on a weeklong visit to Canada at just 16 months old. She has since appeared at major events including Queen Elizabeth's state funeral, King Charles III's coronation, Trooping the Colour, and more. In July 2025, she joined Prince William at the 2025 UEFA Women's Euro Final in Switzerland. After the Lionesses' win, William wrote on Instagram: 'An incredible night for @lionesses and @england in Basel. Congratulations to Sarina, the team and all the support staff. Champions! 🏆' She also returned to Wimbledon in July 2025 alongside her parents and Prince George. In May 2025, Charlotte joined George and Louis at the 80th anniversary of VE Day, seated in the front row alongside her parents.

David Zaslav Is the Good Guy? Why He Might Have Saved Turner Classic Movies
We've made no secret of our quibbles with David Zaslav's oversight of Turner Classic Movies. In June 2023, I wrote a critical op-ed ('Dear David Zaslav: Gutting TCM Will Not Help You Win Filmmakers Back to Warner Bros.') right after the Warner Bros. Discovery CEO presided over layoffs amounting to 80 percent of the staff. So it might come as some surprise that I'm now feeling bullish about the news that Zaslav and Warner Bros. co-heads Mike DeLuca and Pam Abdy will retain creative control over TCM as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares to split into two companies. (This arrangement was first reported by Variety and confirmed by IndieWire.) One will be the Studios and Streaming group, a business that oversees film and TV production, with Zaslav retained as CEO. The other is the Global Networks group, home to the present company's entire suite of linear TV channels, with new CEO Gunnar Wiedenfels, currently WBD's CFO, in charge. This group carries most of WBD's $38 billion in debt. CNN, TNT, and the entire portfolio of networks owned by WBD will go here. More from IndieWire Mark Frost: It's 'Hard to Imagine' Making a Fourth Season of 'Twin Peaks' Without David Lynch The Opening Title Sequence That Makes 'Smoke' Burn with Mystery Except for Turner Classic Movies. TCM will serve as a kind of bridge between the two new companies, with distribution and operations handled by Global Networks, while creative direction will be steered by DeLuca and Abdy at Studios and Streaming, as they are doing now. It's the only network to have such an arrangement. Not only does that make sense, it's good news. If Zaslav spun off TCM along with all the other channels, it could destroy the equilibrium the network achieved over the past couple years. Further, a source at WBD confirms to IndieWire that TCM will continue to have its operations based in Atlanta and that 'things at TCM are basically staying exactly as they are today.' The TCM layoffs were regrettable but not unusual: Many media companies are finding them necessary to survive. And Zaslav appears to be not only invested in the brand's future but may be willing to correct some mistakes. Longtime head of programming Charlie Tabesh, beloved by the network's fans for his thoughtful and eclectic lineups at the core of the brand's identity, was hired back in that role almost immediately in the summer of 2023. Some months later, longtime VP of enterprises and strategic partnerships Genevieve McGillicuddy returned to oversee the TCM Classic Film Festival, an event which she started and grew into one of Hollywood's most beloved annual gatherings. Zaslav listened, probably with help from DeLuca and Abdy. And almost certainly because Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson beseeched him to recognize the network's value and offered to come onboard as creative advisors. Today, TCM is an essential platform for today's leading filmmakers to share, on camera, their favorite films from the network's lineup. Beyond Spielberg, Scorsese, and Anderson, there was Guillermo del Toro (who waxed rhapsodic about Alfred Hitchcock's 'Suspicion' and John Ford's 'The Quiet Man'), Francis Ford Coppola (talking about 'The Magnificent Ambersons'), and Ron Howard (sharing how much his small-screen father Andy Griffith's heel turn in 'A Face in the Crowd' means to him). These have been vital ways to connect the dots between cinema past and present. Most TCM initiatives continue under Zaslav's leadership: The wine program, the publishing line (of which this writer was once an author), the cheeky intros by hosts Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone, Dave Karger, Jacqueline Stewart, and noir czar Eddie Muller. The bespoke montages, assembled to promote the monthly lineup, continue with flair. Now there's also an expanded presence for TCM on the once-again-renamed HBO Max. Earlier this year, New York City hosted a day-long pop-up version of the TCM Classic Film Festival. The flagship festival continues unabated with extraordinary opening-night galas the past two years headlined by talent from 'Pulp Fiction' and 'The Empire Strikes Back' — showcasing that the idea of classic film encompasses more than black-and-white gems. There have been hiccups. Being short-staffed undoubtedly resulted in a few instances of the network airing different titles than were listed, most notably the 1932 Kay Francis vehicle 'Jewel Robbery' when the Barbara Stanwyck Western '40 Guns' was supposed to air instead. Still, that's nitpicking. Just two weekends ago, I found myself so compelled by their lineup that I watched an entire evening of TCM: 'Double Indemnity' and 'Chinatown' introduced by Mankiewicz in conversation with Nathan Lane at New York City's United Palace theater, followed by 'Sorry, Wrong Number' and Eddie Muller giving a rich, appreciative take that pinpointed that film's unique Lynchian mood. Zaslav's interest in TCM may not be entirely altruistic: After the day-and-date release strategy disaster of the Jason Kilar regime, the new Warner Bros. Discovery needed to telegraph that its leadership was invested in filmmaking and filmmakers. Bringing in filmmakers to be part of TCM was a savvy move. TCM is also great brand-burnishing, with the network built heavily off of the Warner Bros. library and classics like 'The Maltese Falcon' and 'Casablanca.' TCM is a shrine to Warner Bros.' glorious past and an ongoing snapshot of the rich history that Warners filmmakers could join today. The funny thing is, by all accounts, Zaslav is also genuinely sentimental about the network and said to even have it on at his office quite often.
