Meta Bright, ChargeHere formalise EV charging joint venture
The JV aims to expand the group's footprint in Malaysia's rapidly growing EV charging infrastructure market.
The partners will incorporate a JV company – Meta Bright Chargesini Sdn Bhd – dedicated to developing, installing and operating EV charging infrastructure across Malaysia, focusing on malls, hotels, residential and commercial areas.
Meta Bright Energy will hold a 51% stake while ChargeHere will hold the remaining 49%.
Meta Bright executive director of corporate and strategic planning Derek Phang Kiew Lim said the JV with ChargeHere significantly expands the company's capabilities within the renewable energy sector, particularly in EV infrastructure.
'It represents an essential milestone for Meta Bright, aligning closely with our ESG goals and strategic focus on creating sustainable, recurring revenue streams,' he said in a statement.
ChargeHere, operating under the ChargeSini brand, currently manages Malaysia's largest network of EV charging points with 935 charging stations across 300 locations, serving more than 32,000 active users.
The collaboration enables Meta Bright to leverage ChargeHere's established technical capabilities and operational experience to advance the group's presence in the growing EV infrastructure sector.
Through the initiative, Meta Bright aims to capitalise on the government's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which outlines the strategic expansion of renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure nationwide, including the establishment of 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025.
Both parties have identified several urgent and approved projects to launch under the JV, with key locations in Johor, Penang and Selangor.
Additionally, the partnership is already actively planning subsequent stages of expansion, with an extensive pipeline of upcoming projects that include notable sites across Kuala Lumpur, Pahang and Malacca, among others.
The sites range from prominent hotels and commercial buildings to large residential condominiums.
'Our immediate and planned installations will substantially broaden our operational footprint in key urban areas, supporting national goals and meeting rising consumer demand for accessible EV charging solutions,' Phang said.
The joint venture with ChargeHere significantly enhances the group's renewable energy and energy efficiency portfolio, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and innovative energy solutions.
In addition to the joint venture, Meta Bright also announced the disposal of its wholly owned Australian subsidiary, Meta Bright Australia Pty Ltd, for RM25.37 million.
The decision comes as part of the group's broader risk management strategy to mitigate exposure to cross-border operational risks, including geopolitical uncertainties, foreign exchange volatility and global economic conditions.
'The disposal of our Australian subsidiary allows us to redeploy resources towards our core operations in Malaysia, ensuring sustained long-term growth and shareholder value. The proceeds will also help us significantly mitigate the cross-border business amidst the current geopolitical environment, reduce our bank borrowings, and enhance our financial resilience,' Phang said.

BYD aims to triple Saudi footprint after Tesla enters market
BYD sold more fully electric cars in Europe than Elon Musk's firm for the first time ever in April. (EPA Images pic) RIYADH : Chinese automaker BYD Co plans to ramp up its expansion efforts in Saudi Arabia, building on momentum from Tesla Inc's launch in the country and capitalising on the kingdom's push to become a new hub for electric cars. BYD, which launched in Saudi Arabia last year and currently runs three showrooms there, aims to open another seven locations by the second half of 2026, according to Jerome Saigot, managing director for Saudi Arabia. The firm expects to sell more than 5,000 vehicles this year in the kingdom, a drop in the bucket for BYD's overall sales but sizable in a market where gas-guzzling cars dominate the roads and EV adoption has been slow going. 'Saudi is a complex market. You need to go fast. You need to think big,' Saigot said in an interview with Bloomberg. 'We are not here to stay at five or ten thousand cars a year,' he added. Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in the EV industry through its Public Investment Fund (PIF) as part of a broader strategy to cut emissions, curb auto imports and diversify the local economy. The PIF has backed Lucid Motors as the automaker works on building Saudi's first auto manufacturing plant. It has also created its own EV brand known as Ceer and started a JV to build out EV charging stations. Still, electric cars account for just over 1% of total car sales in the kingdom, with high costs, sparse charging infrastructure and extreme temperatures factors challenging EV adoption, according to PwC. Tesla opened its first showroom in Riyadh in April, joining automakers including BYD and Geely in trying to gain a foothold in the market. BYD's Saigot sees the move as beneficial, with Tesla helping to raise EV awareness. 'The more Tesla communicates on marketing, the better it is for us,' said Saigot, who started at BYD in April after serving in previous roles at Nissan Motor Co and Great Wall Motor Co Ltd. BYD has been gaining ground on Tesla in recent months. The Chinese automaker sold more fully electric cars in Europe than Elon Musk's firm for the first time ever in April. Some analysts now predict BYD will pull ahead of Tesla globally for the full year.

Volkswagen stops production at Chinese plant in electric push
Volkswagen has suffered years of declining sales in China in the face of EVs offered by local competitors. (EPA Images pic) FRANKFURT : Volkswagen and its Chinese partner SAIC have shuttered production at a plant in China due to slowing demand for internal combustion engine cars, a Volkswagen spokesman told AFP today. 'Volkswagen Group and its joint venture partners are accelerating the transformation towards electric, intelligent, connected vehicles,' the spokesman said. 'Many SAIC Volkswagen sites are currently being converted or have already been converted for electric vehicle production,' he added. The spokesman confirmed that production had ceased at a plant in Nanjing, a move first reported by business daily Handelsblatt. A company source told AFP that part of the reason for stopping production was the plant's urban location, which makes retrofitting and expansion work for electric vehicle (EV) production difficult. EV sales are far advanced in China, the world's largest car market, forcing European companies that have traditionally specialised in petrol or diesel vehicles to respond. Volkswagen itself has suffered years of declining sales in China in the face of EVs offered by local competitors such as BYD. It is trying to fight back using local expertise as part of its 'In China, for China' strategy. 'The production network will also be aligned with and optimised for this comprehensive strategic push,' the spokesman said. Volkswagen said Wednesday that its vehicle deliveries in China had dropped by just over 2% in the first half of this year. That fall was nevertheless smaller than the 7.4% drop it reported in the first half of last year.
