Nintendo of America suggested giving Pikachu "huge breasts" during localization according to The Pokemon Company's CEO, who "won't show those illustrations to anyone as long as I live"
Apparently Nintendo of America wanted to give Pikachu… and I quote… "huge breasts" during the localization of Pokemon.
Localization is a delicate process, some things that make sense in one region may not translate to another, not even on the actual act of translation either. A prominent example is Kirby looking pissed on the cover of every game for the American box art but being his usual cute Kirby self in Japan, or the Crash Bandicoot covers in Japan which were wildly different from the by comparison edgier US design. And turns out Pokemon had a redesign suggested that may have changed the way we see the games forever.
In an interview with Nintendo from around the launch of Pokemon Gold and Silver (uncovered by Game*Spark and translated by Automaton), The Pokemon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara said: "When I first showed Pokemon to them, they told me it was too cute. The staff at Nintendo of America then suggested their own designs for the characters – I won't show those illustrations to anyone as long as I live."
Ishihara added that "they kind of looked like the characters from the Cats musical. So, for example, Pikachu was changed into a character shaped like a kind of a tabby cat with huge breasts."
When asked if it was akin to women who do Pikachu cosplay at conventions, Ishihara said: "They presented that kind of design to us for real. I thought it was interesting, in a sense of appreciating such cultural differences. However, I didn't want to compete in the [overseas] market with that kind of thing."
Pokemon already caused all manner of controversy when they first arrived, with some even calling it satanic, so was the world ready to see Pikachu with breasts? Were other Pokemon going to get human anatomy added onto them? What exactly is Diglett? These are the questions we have avoided by The Pokemon Company standing its ground and saying no to a stacked Pikachu, and we're better off for it.

Yamaha Unveils New Flagship Soundbar With Surround:AI Technology
Yamaha has taken the wraps off its latest flagship soundbar, complete with so many speakers and so much full surround sound home theater technology that it barely still classes as a soundbar – in a good way. Called the True X Surround 90A (or the SR-X90A for short), Yamaha's new premium soundbar kicks off its attractions by being a multiple speaker system that includes external wireless subwoofer and rear speakers alongside the main bar. This instantly defines the system as a true surround sound package versus the front-soundstage-only set up most soundbars deliver – and the technology inside each unit sees Yamaha trying to take that full surround experience to a new level for the soundbar world. For starters, the system can decode and play Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and even, uniquely so far as I know, Auro-3D soundtracks. The X90A's main bar element also includes real up-firing speakers to deliver the height/overhead effects associated with the latest 3D sound formats, while proprietary SURROUND:AI technology works to continually optimize the X90A's sound to the content you're watching. Looking at these latter two key features in more detail, the upfiring speakers are based around the revolutionary 'beam' technology Yamaha introduced with the classic YSP-1 soundbar it released more than 25 years ago, with no less than 12 (six per side) precisely calibrated beam speakers tucked under the main soundbar's top edge. Using so many small but focused beam speakers rather than the usual single large drivers makes it possible, Yamaha claims, for the X90A to deliver more accurate sound localization that more closely resembles the performance of real in-ceiling speakers. The SURROUND:AI technology was developed initially for Yamaha's AV receivers, but the X90A marks its first appearance on a soundbar. It works by using artificial intelligence to analyse in real time the various sound elements (dialogue, score, ambient sounds, specific locational effects and so on) in any given movie scene, and then using that analysis to continually optimize the soundbar's audio staging. Yamaha is quick to add, too, that despite its AI foundation, SURROUND:AI has been carefully tuned by Yamaha's sound engineers; it's not just a machine's take on how something should sound! In fact, as you'd hope of a flagship soundbar from such a renowned audio brand as Yamaha, everything about the X90A has apparently been precision tuned – including the four newly designed full-range drivers found inside the main bar component. These new eye-shaped oval speakers have been engineered to deliver minimal distortion despite their slender profiles, as well as allegedly providing richer mid-range tones and high volume levels from fewer components to preserve sonic purity across the soundbar's frequency range. The 12 beam height speakers and four newly designed full-range speakers are additionally joined in the main bar by three dedicated tweeters to deliver cleaner, purer, more detail high frequency sounds. Turning to the external subwoofer that's part of the X90A package, this again features an all-new design that includes Yamaha's patented symmetrical flare port technology, where the sub's inlet and outlet ports use exactly the same shape and an internal plate carefully controls airflow to maintain symmetry, reducing the sort of distortions associated with air turbulence and speaker movement. In fact, Yamaha claims port noise is reduced by as much as 20dB compared to 'conventional designs', whatever those might be. The 'True X' rear speakers included in the X90A system are actually more than rear speakers, meanwhile. They're designed to be portable, and can be used as standalone stereo Bluetooth speakers anywhere in your home when they're not needed for surround channel movie duties. More signs of the X90A's premium positioning can be found, says Yamaha, in elements of its design such as its wide, precision-engineered table-top feet (though a wall-mount bracket is also included in the package), its acoustically optimized large aperture speaker grilles, and the system's generally high build quality. The main bar, in particular, is encased in a 1.6mm-thick metal housing. The X90A's built-in physical connections include an HDMI loop-through with eARC support, an optical audio input, while wireless connectivity is possible through MusicCast, AirPlay and Bluetooth. Last but not least on the True X Surround 90A's list of attractions is its support for Yamaha's proprietary MusicCast network system. This lets you easily link and control multiple MusicCast-capable components around your home using the dedicated MusicCast app. The Yamaha True X Surround 90A will go on sale in early September, priced at $3,499/£2,499. — Related Reading KEF Unveils Innovative New 'XIO' Soundbar With Exclusive Intelligent Placement Technology JBL Unveils New Soundbar Range—Including 16-Channel, 2,470W Flagship With Groundbreaking AI Sound Boost Technology Marshall Channels Its Rock Star Energy Into Its First Ever Soundbar

NINTENDO: On Friday, Nintendo reported Q1 results, with earnings per share and revenue growing notably year-over-year as the quarter including the release of the Switch 2 console on June 5. 'The system has gotten off to a good start, with global sales exceeding 3.5M units in the first four days after launch, which is the highest-ever global sales level for any of our dedicated video game platforms,' the company said. 'In response to the strong demand that has surpassed our expectations, we are strengthening production to increase supply. Regarding Nintendo Switch 2 software, Mario Kart World, which was released on the same day as the hardware launch, recorded sales of 5.63M units, including units bundled with the hardware. Given that consumers can play both Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive software and Nintendo Switch software with Nintendo Switch 2, titles released for Nintendo Switch in previous fiscal years such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Party Jamboree, also sold well. As a result, Nintendo Switch 2 hardware sales reached 5.82M units, and Nintendo Switch 2 software sales reached 8.67M units. In addition, Nintendo Switch hardware sales totaled 0.98M units, and Nintendo Switch software sales totaled 24.40M units.' Looking ahead, Nintendo guided for FY26 net sales of JPY1.9T, with operating profit expected to reach JPY320B and Switch 2 hardware sales anticipated to hit 15M units. 'There are no changes to the original financial forecast for this fiscal year, which was published on May 8, 2025,' the company added. 'For Nintendo Switch 2, we will aim to invigorate the platform and expand the user base by conveying the unique appeal of the hardware, including its improved performance and newly added features, and by continuing to introduce new titles that can leverage that appeal to the fullest. Regarding Nintendo Switch 2 software, following the release of Donkey Kong Bananza and Super Mario Party Jamboree -Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV in July, we plan to release Drag x Drive and Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World in August. In October, we are planning to release Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, as well as a Nintendo Switch 2 hardware bundle that includes this title. There is also a wide variety of titles from other software publishers scheduled to be released. We will aim to maximize software sales by maintaining the momentum of Mario Kart World, which has gotten off to a strong start, and by continuously introducing these new titles.' Following the report, Nintendo also announced pricing for the original Nintendo Switch family of systems and products will change in the United States based on market conditions, effective August 3, 2025. These include Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and select Nintendo Switch accessories. Other Nintendo products, including certain Nintendo Switch 2 accessories, select amiibo, and the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo, will also see adjustments. More specifically, the game maker raised the price of the standard first-generation Switch to $339.99 from $299.99, the Switch OLED to $399.99 from $349.99, and the Switch Lite to $229.99 from $199.99. The Fly notes that the move was announced just a day after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing new 'reciprocal tariffs' on a range of countries, including Cambodia and Vietnam, where Nintendo has shifted much of its hardware production. EA RESULTS: Last Tuesday, Electronic Arts reported Q1 earnings per share and net bookings that exceeded Wall Street estimates and reiterated FY26 guidance, though it provided a downbeat outlook for Q2. 'We delivered a strong start to FY26, outperforming expectations ahead of what will be the most exciting launch slate in EA's history,' said Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts. 'From deepening player engagement in EA SPORTS to gearing up for Battlefield 6 and skate., we're scaling our global communities and continuing to shape the future of interactive entertainment.' 'We exceeded the high end of our guidance in Q1 highlighting the resilience of our live services and the breadth of our portfolio,' said Stuart Canfield, CFO of Electronic Arts. 'With strong fundamentals and a robust pipeline ahead, we remain confident in our full-year guidance and long-term margin framework.' Following the report, BofA raised the firm's price target on Electronic Arts to $168 from $166 and maintained a Neutral rating on the shares. The firm said the Q2 guide being low was mostly because of differences in revenue phasing. The analyst also noted that the firm raised its price target due to a higher FY26 EPS forecast of $8.20, noting that it now models 7M 'Battlefield 6' units being sold in FY26, assuming a holiday launch. Additionally, Baird increased its price target on Electronic Arts to $170 from $168 and reiterated an Outperform rating on the shares. The firm updated its model following Q1 results. ROBLOX: Roblox (RBLX) reported Q2 results last week, with earnings per share coming in below expectations but revenue beating estimates. Average DAUs rose 41% year-over-year, while hours engaged jumped 58%. Meanwhile, the company provided upbeat net bookings guidance for Q3 and FY25. Many analysts raised their price targets on the stock after the report, with Benchmark increasing its target to $150 from $77, believing the business has 'entered a new phase of breakout velocity,' with multiple monetization engines scaling in parallel. Additionally, Wedbush raised the firm's price target on Roblox to $165 from $142 and reiterated an Outperform rating on the shares. The firm views Roblox as the most compelling growth opportunity in the video game sector, given the flywheel from recent hit games; developer incentives, infrastructure improvements, and AI-driven discovery that are driving massive platform growth; genre expansion and aging up, which increase potential ad inventory; and pricing optimization across games and regions, driving improved revenue streams. EPIC/ANDROID STORE: Last week, Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google unit post on X, formerly Twitter, 'Thanks to the verdict, the Epic Games Store for Android will be coming to the Google Play Store! It's already available worldwide from our web site, Investors in Epic Games include Tencent (TCEHY), KKR (KKR), Disney (DIS), and Sony. MICROSOFT: Xbox maker Microsoft also reported quarterly results last week, with EPS and revenue for Q4 beating consensus estimates on strong cloud revenue growth. On the gaming side, the company said that Xbox content and services revenue, which includes Xbox Game Pass, rose 13% year-over-year in the quarter, though the software and technology conglomerate declined to provide new Game Pass subscriber numbers. Xbox hardware revenue, meanwhile, fell 22% in Q4. 'We are now the top publisher on both Xbox and PlayStation this quarter,' said CEO Satya Nadella on the company's earnings call. Nadella added that 'Game Pass annual revenue was nearly $5Bfor the first time,' noting that the company has 500M monthly active users across gaming platforms and devices. Looking ahead, Microsoft said on the call that it sees Q1 Gaming revenue down a mid-to-high single digit percentage.
