The Last of Us Part II's new mode puts the story in chronological order

The Verge7 days ago
With season 2 of HBO's The Last of Us in the books, and with no The Last of Us Part III coming in the immediate future, Naughty Dog has come up with an interesting way to funnel all the attention from the show into the game. The studio has released a new, free patch for The Last of Us Part II Remastered that lets you play the game in chronological order. The mode takes Abby and Ellie's stories and interleaves them in chronological order rather than the nonlinear story of the original version of the game, which used timeskips and flashbacks.
In addition to Chronological Mode, the patch also includes new achievements and skins to use in Part II Remastered's roguelike game mode No Return. Now you can dress up Joel and his brother Tommy like Naughty Dog's other pair of visually indistinct, emotionally constipated brothers; Nathan and Sam Drake. Naughty Dog does still recommend that first timers play TLOU Part II normally before tackling Chronological Mode but that, 'the team's hard work has paid off with a fascinating new way to enjoy this chapter.' Chronological Mode will give players a new reason to pick up the game while awaiting the next season of the show which will dive into events from Abby's perspective. Season 3 though, will proceed without Neil Druckmann as co-lead. Druckmann, co-director of both The Last of Us games and creative director at Naughty Dog, recently announced that he's taking a break from the show to focus efforts on the studio's games including the recently announced, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

2025 Emmy nominations are announced: See the full list

"Severance," "The White Lotus," "The Studio" and "Hacks" are among the shows that earned top nominations for the 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards as the 2025 nominees were announced Tuesday morning. Two categories were unveiled exclusively on "CBS Mornings" — the nominees for outstanding reality competition and for outstanding talk series. The rest of this year's nominations were announced by actors Harvey Guillén ("What We Do in the Shadows") and Brenda Song ("Running Point"). Last year's Emmys were a coronation for FX, with the cable network's "Shōgun" and "The Bear" both earning wins in the double digits, though the latter missed out on the top award for comedies, which instead went to HBO's "Hacks." Netflix's biggest player was in the limited series categories, where "Baby Reindeer" won multiple trophies. The 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on CBS on Sunday, Sept. 14, with comedian Nate Bargatze as host. Here are the nominees in the Emmy Awards' top categories:

Nick Frost Becomes Hagrid in First Look at HBO's HARRY POTTER Series — GeekTyrant

HBO's Harry Potter series adaptation is officially underway, and fans just got their first look at Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. The beloved half-giant gamekeeper, originally portrayed by Robbie Coltrane in the films, now gets a fresh take from the Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz star. The reveal comes on the heels of HBO announcing that production has officially started on the highly anticipated series, which began filming Monday at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K. The shoot is expected to run through spring 2026, setting the stage for a 2027 debut on HBO and Max. Alongside Frost, the new generation of Hogwarts students is led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. These three were selected from over 30,000 hopefuls who auditioned last fall. The ensemble cast is packed with familiar names, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy. Additional roles include Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, and Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley. Rounding out the cast is Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander. The series is helmed by showrunner and writer Francesca Gardiner ( His Dark Materials, Killing Eve ), with Mark Mylod ( Succession ) directing. Gardiner and Mylod serve as executive producers alongside J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. With filming underway and a powerhouse creative team in place, HBO's Harry Potter series promises a faithful yet reimagined take on the wizarding world, and Nick Frost's Hagrid already looks like the perfect mix of warmth and wildness fans have been hoping for.
