2024 Pakistan elections report: Election watchdog barred from briefing Senate panel
The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs told Senate Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs that the Pattan Development Organization could no longer be invited, citing the cancellation of its registration.
Pattan's chief, Sarwar Bari, has been under pressure since the group released a report alleging widespread irregularities and vote-rigging in the controversial 2024 general elections.
Pattan was expected to offer suggestions on improving election transparency, but its removal overshadowed the committee's discussion on electoral reforms.
Led by Senator Dr Mohammad Humayun Mohmand, the committee reviewed proposals to move away from the current first-past-the-post system. Lawmakers discussed switching to proportional representation, aiming to better reflect the public's vote.
The panel also debated internet voting for overseas Pakistanis. While concerns remain over security and trust, some members said the idea is worth exploring – with the right safeguards in place.
Lawmakers agreed that any digital system would face serious legal and technical challenges but said reforms are needed to strengthen the country's democracy.

India: chickens have finally come home to roost
In an interesting but important development, US President Donald Trump has said he 'will substantially raise tariffs on India' over its purchases of Russian oil. In his new post, the US President assailed New Delhi for buying Russian oil and then selling it. Over the weekend the Indian government had said that India would keep purchasing oil from Russia despite Trump threats, prompting White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller to officially accuse India of effectively financing Russia's war in Ukraine by purchasing oil from Moscow. The Indian diaspora or NRIs (non-resident Indians) in North America in particular are being chastised for Modi government's policy of funding the Russian war to kill innocent men and women in Ukraine. India deserved it because it had been trying to appease both the US and Russia simultaneously by pursuing the policy of running with the hares and hunting with the hounds. Now for the Sangh Parivar chickens have finally come home to roost. The consequences of India's bad actions are therefore unpleasant and unavoidable. Affordable electricity for public top priority: minister
KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Energy Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has stated that the Sindh government is taking serious steps to provide low-cost and environmentally friendly energy to the people. He expressed these views during a demonstration organised by a private company at the Energy Department office where solar home systems, solar inverters with lithium batteries, and solar panels were showcased. Also present were the Secretary of the Energy Department, CEO of STDC, MD of Thar Coal Energy Board, and other relevant officials. The Minister noted that the Sindh government established the province's first power plant under a Public-Private Partnership, and the electricity produced by this plant remains cheaper than electricity from other sources. This electricity is being delivered to relevant entities through the Sindh Transmission and Dispatch Company (STDC). He added that two solar parks have recently been completed in Sindh, and electricity from these projects will also be provided at the lowest possible tariff. The purpose of these initiatives, he said, is to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and provide consumers relief from high electricity costs. Nasir Hussain Shah stated, 'We are closely monitoring the basis on which companies are determining electricity tariffs. Our position is clear: instead of expensive electricity generated from fossil fuels, we must transition to solar and hybrid sources.' He acknowledged that some international agreements present challenges, but assured that the Sindh government is seriously exploring ways to overcome them. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
