UK-US deal for lower car, aerospace duties takes effect

The Sun5 hours ago

LONDON: A trade deal cutting tariffs on British exports of automobiles and aerospace equipment to the United States takes effect Monday, as the two sides continue to negotiate over steel duties.
'From today, British car and aerospace manufacturers will benefit from major tariff reductions when exporting to the US, saving thousands of jobs,' the UK Department of Trade said in a statement Monday.
London and Washington reached an agreement in May to cut US tariffs on cars from 27.5 percent to 10 percent, with a limit of 100,000 vehicles a year.
It also fully eliminated a 10-percent tariff on goods such as engines and aircraft parts.
'Our historic trade deal with the United States delivers for British businesses and protects UK jobs,' Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in the same statement.
'From today, our world-class automotive and aerospace industries will see tariffs slashed, safeguarding key industries that are vital to our economy.'
In return, Britain agreed to further open its market to US ethanol and beef.
That has raised concerns in the chemical industry and among British farmers, even though the meat would still have to meet UK food safety standards.
London is still negotiating for lower tariffs for its steel and aluminium exports to the United States, which has raised its levies to 25 percent.
'We will continue go further and make progress towards zero percent tariffs on core steel products,' the trade department said in the statement.

UK lenders report surprise rise in mortgages in May, consumer lending cools

LONDON: The number of mortgages approved by British lenders for house purchases unexpectedly jumped in May, according to Bank of England data that suggested the housing market recovered quickly from the end of a tax break for homebuyers in April. Mortgage approvals rose to 63,032 in May from 60,656 the month before, and confounding the median forecast in a Reuters poll of economists for a fall to 59,750. "The gradual easing of interest rates could be helping to boost confidence and demand amongst mortgage borrowers," Karim Haji, global and UK head of financial services at accountants KPMG, said. Britain's housing market slowed in April after the expiry of a tax incentive for some homebuyers. The BoE's data published on Monday showed approvals for people looking to re-mortgage rose by the most in May since February 2024 in May. Net mortgage lending - which reflects completed house purchases - rose by a net 2.054 billion pounds compared with a fall of almost 800 million pounds in April. The BoE data showed unsecured consumer borrowing rose by slightly less than expected, potentially signalling a recovery in spending power. In cash terms, consumer credit increased by a net 0.86 billion pounds (US$1.18 billion) in May from 1.94 billion pounds in April - below the Reuters poll consensus for a 1.05 billion-pound rise. "The cost of living remains high, but a drop in consumer borrowing in May signals that rising incomes are starting to feed through to the cost of day-to-day expenses," Haji added. The BoE held interest rates at 4.25 per cent earlier this month, and investors are betting that the central bank will reduce borrowing costs in two further quarter-point moves to 3.75 per cent by the end of the year.

'Generali' sign atop insurer's skyscraper offices collapses in Milan

A partially collapsed sign of the Generali insurance headquarters is seen at the top of the Hadid tower in Milan, Italy, June 30, 2025. REUTERS/Daniele Mascolo MILAN (Reuters) -One of the giant Generali signs that crown the Italian insurer's head offices in Milan collapsed on Monday, remaining atop the 170 metre-high (558 ft) skyscraper but at risk of crashing to the ground, firefighters said on Monday. Generali, which is Italy's biggest insurer, said there were no injuries, adding that staff had been instructed to remain at home and work remotely. "The situation has been promptly managed with the collapsed sign immediately secured without any damage to people or the surrounding structures," it said in a note. "The possible causes of the accident are being assessed. Generali will continue to promptly provide all relevant updates," it added. Firefighters said they were working with Generali personnel to prevent the sign from dislodging from the top of the building and plunging to the ground. The area has been cordoned off and the nearby metro station shut. The Generali building, known as the Hadid Tower, is part of Milan's CityLife redevelopment project, which saw the construction of three iconic skyscrapers dubbed Le Tre Torri - "three towers" in Italian - on the grounds of the former trade fair. Built between 2014 and 2017 and spanning 44 storeys, the Generali tower was designed by the late Iraqi-born British architect Zaha Hadid. The other two towers, which house the Milan offices of German insurer Allianz and consultancy firm PwC respectively, were designed by architects Arata Isozaki and Daniel Libeskind. The CityLife project also includes high-end apartment buildings surrounding the park where the three towers are located as well as a shopping centre. Dozens of employees of the shopping centre queued outside the cordoned-off area waiting to see if they would be allowed in, according to a Reuters eyewitness.
