Nigel, the great unifier? What Varadkar is saying is that Farage is a political bogeyman

Ex-Taoiseach Varadkar should know all about a politician that is largely unpopular with one side, after all, he is just the same, writes Lindy McDowell
Nigel Farage, the great unifier? The man to bring about a united Ireland in which centrist unionists would feel relatively more comfortable than in a UK run by a bloke with a ballot box in one hand and a pint of bitter in the other?
This is the, shall we say, imaginative suggestion coming from former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar who outlined his thinking twice this week — first on BBC NI's The View and then in conversation with Rev Karen Sethuraman at the Ireland's Future discussion event as part of Féile. He argues that if Farage were to become UK PM it would 'change the picture in terms of attitudes towards independence in Scotland.'

The View's Ana Navarro accused of dismissing fellow CNN panelist as 'white man' in heated exchange

Political commentator Ana Navarro went after a fellow panelist's racial identity on Monday night's episode of ' CNN NewsNight'. Navarro – who is a senior political commentator for CNN as well as a co–host of The View - went head to head with conservative journalist Brad Polumbo over Trump's immigration policies. The heated exchange began when Polumbo called out Navarro for labeling Trump's immigration agenda as a 'reign of terror'. 'I think you're definitely being hyperbolic when you talk about a reign of terror. When the doomsday alarm from Democrats or media critics is always at a ten, it doesn't hit the same,' Polumbo said. Navarro issued a blistering response, saying, 'It might be hyperbolic for you as a white man… It's certainly not hyperbolic for me as a Latino.' Polumbo was offended by her comment and accused Navarro of being racially discriminatory, 'Oh okay, so we're being racist now,' he clapped back. Navarro insisted she was not being racist, but Polumbo disagreed. 'To dismiss my opinion for being a white man, is racist,' he responded. The two continued to bicker, with Navarro asking, 'Being a white man is an insult?' and Polumbo responding, 'When you invoke it to dismiss my opinion, yes.' Navarro (pictured) – who is a senior political commentator for CNN as well as a co–host of The View - went head to head with conservative journalist Brad Polumbo over Trump's immigration policies Navarro then asked the conservative, 'Do you think Latinos are living under circumstances that other people may not be right now?' However, before Polumbo could respond, CNN host Abby Philip stepped in to defend Navarro and de-escalate the argument. 'I just want to make a point that, Brad, all she's saying is that her view of the situation is different from yours. I don't think that's an insult,' Philip said. But Polumbo maintained his position that Navarro was being racist, saying, 'She basically said that I'm wrong because I'm a white man.' Philip attempted to wrap the conversation, saying, 'No, no, no… She said I see it differently from you — which is not an insult. And it's also not a racial insult.' A clip of the dramatic back-and-forth has gone viral on X, where many users shared their opinion on the dispute. One user wrote, 'She is a bigot. Why does @CNN and the @TheView allow this behavior. White people should form a class action suit and sue her and these networks!' Another said, 'Being an insufferable, rude woman, makes her opinion invalid.' Some users, however, rushed to Navarro's defense. 'White men are absolute cry babies. They just cannot,' a user wrote in response to Polumbo's reaction. This is certainly not the first time Navarro has gone head-to-head with CNN's guests. In April, an argument between Navarro and a black conservative pundit turned so vicious that the network had to abruptly cut to a commercial break. Navarro and Shermichael Singleton got into a shouting match as they discussed the case of undocumented migrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration. The back-and-forth turned quickly ugly after Singleton appeared to mishear something Navarro said and became furious at what he called a comparison between undocumented migrants and African Americans who are the descendants of slaves. 'They are not the same as black people who were brought here against our will!' he shouted. 'They decide to walk their way across the border, there is a big difference!' Phillips then chimed in to tell Singleton, 'I think you actually misheard what she said.' Navarro added: 'You think I would say something like that after advocating for black people my entire life?' But the argument continued to escalate, with Singleton sarcastically replying: 'Great. Congratulations. Last time I checked, I'm black. You're not, okay.' Navarro fought back: 'That's right. I'm Latino and my people are being racially profiled.' 'Do I have to remind you the history of my people? Do you really wanna go there?' an agitated Singleton continued. That's when Phillips cut their shouting match and sent the cameras to commercial break.

Whoopi Goldberg turns on Barack Obama with furious rant

Whoopi Goldberg took direct aim at former President Barack Obama, delivering a stunning and unsparing rebuttal that left her fellow co-hosts rattled and the audience in stunned silence. The unexpected clash erupted during Tuesday's episode of the The View following Obama's controversial remarks at a private fundraiser, where he urged Democrats to stop 'whining,' ditch 'navel-gazing,' and 'toughen up' following the 2024 election loss. 'It's going to require a little bit less navel-gazing and a little less whining and being in fetal positions,' Obama told donors, according to The New York Times. 'And it's going to require Democrats to just toughen up.' Never one to hold back, Goldberg was furious. 'Let me remind everybody who was out in the front lines marching when we had the giant marches that went on. It was the people. The people went out. They were not navel-gazing,' she declared as she stared down the camera. 'It was older people who were saying, "Why are you touching my Social Security?" It was not people whining. It was about people saying, "Why are you taking these rights away from my child when my child was born here?"' The 69-year-old didn't stop there. In a pointed rebuttal that directly challenged both Obama and Shark Tank billionaire Mark Cuban, who had also criticized the Democratic Party's messaging, Goldberg insisted that criticism of the left was misdirected. 'This has not been about Democrats laying back,' she thundered. 'This has been about y'all. Because their messaging was always the same. Democrats have been angry at what this man tried to do the last time. They've been angry this time. So, with much due respect to you both, I believe you are pointing the finger at the wrong person when you say Democrats.' Cuban, speaking in a virtual address that aired during the segment, scolded Democratic strategists for reducing their message to a simplistic mantra: 'Trump sucks.' 'We picked the wrong pressure points,' Cuban said. 'It's just "Trump sucks." That's the underlying thought of everything the Democrats do. Trump says the sky is blue. "Trump sucks." That's not the way to win.' Co-hosts Ana Navarro and Sunny Hostin tried to offer more nuanced takes urging Democratic officials to produce detailed policy alternatives rather than rely on protest alone. Navarro pointed out how the public resistance to Trump's immigration policies, was actually resulting in a collapse in his polling numbers. 'Right now, Trump's handling on immigration has gone dramatically down,' she noted. 'Why is that? Because the American people have taken it upon themselves to amplify the truth, to show up and protest these horrible, inhumane raids... to tell the truth about what their relatives are going through.' 'We have heard the story of US citizen children with cancer who are not getting treatment because they've had to leave with their deported parents. Because the American people are doing their part - amplifying, showing up at protest, donating, organizing, and being vigilant. So, some of us say that Donald Trump sucks. He does suck. And it feels good to say it,' Navarro said to cheers from the audience. Goldberg then turned her ire toward those criticizing flood victims in Texas, in a another rant that was no less emotional. 'Let's be really clear,' Goldberg said, 'You can't blame anybody for these floods. It's nobody's fault. I didn't do it. You didn't do it. Has nothing to do with Washington. This was a natural disaster.'

So, with much due respect to you both, I believe you are pointing the finger at the wrong person when you say Democrats.' Co-host Sara Haines attempted to clarify whether Goldberg was differentiating between voters and elected officials, to which she responded emphatically: 'Yes, I am. You're saying that because I agree - voters are very impassioned voters.' Cuban, speaking in a virtual address that aired during the segment, scolded Democratic strategists for reducing their message to a simplistic mantra: 'Trump sucks.' People are trying to get their lives together. These floods are no joke. This is not light humor. This is not how we do in America. We show up for whoever is in trouble. We don't say, "Who did you vote for?" We show up.'
