Why Kmart Australia's $89 'dupe' of a $1,000 buy is causing a huge stir

Daily Mail19 hours ago
Shoppers are racing to Kmart to get their hands on the retailer's newest must-have homewares before they completely sell out.
However, it's one particular coffee table that has caused the biggest stir online as it looks almost identical to a $999 designer version - but will only set you back $89.
The Charles Coffee Table has just landed online and the ultra-modern piece features a sculptural disk-style top perched on bold, rounded legs.
Its unique look is almost indistinguishable from the high-end Bon Coffee Table from luxe Aussie furniture brand James Lane.
But while the James Lane version comes with a jaw-dropping price tag of $999, Kmart's dupe comes in at $910 less.
And it's not the only version out there. Temple & Webster also stock a similar design for $600, while Fantastic Furniture's lookalike will set you back $599.
The reason fans are finding the budget buy so appealing starts with its sleek whitewashed finish and bulbous 'bowling ball' legs give it a designer edge.
With a compact size of 70cm in diameter and 28cm high, it's the perfect statement piece for smaller living spaces or minimalist interiors.
Its unique look is almost indistinguishable from the high-end Bon Coffee Table from luxe Aussie furniture brand James Lane, which retails for $999
'Ok but rounded edges are perfect for kids,' one fan commented.
'Just saw a heap of these at my local Kmart yesterday,' another informed.
'It's so cute! But it's tiny,' a cautious shopper added.
'I want one so bad just for the legs.'
The table is part of Kmart's Anko range, which has quickly become synonymous with trendy, affordable home styling.
'Fast furniture it will be Landfill in 12mths. Buy quality and buy responsibly,' one wrote, in favour of investment pieces.
And while it's not handcrafted from mango wood like the James Lane original, most other shoppers have been quick to overlook that when the dupe looks as good as it does.
If you're hoping to snap one up, now might be the time as stock is already dwindling online. However your best bet is to call your local store and cross your fingers.
'Kmart can't keep up with the demand for all this new stock. It's either not in all stores or sold out immediately,' said another of the coffee table's instant popularity.
If you do miss out, there is still a silver lining.
The matching Charles Bedside Tables, featuring the same sculptural legs and chic whitewash finish, are also online and selling for just $39.

Platinum gives South Africa fiscal boost ahead of budget, says Old Mutual

JOHANNESBURG, July 22 (Reuters) - A platinum price rally and increased mining royalties should ease the pressure on South Africa's fragile coalition government ahead of its October budget, Old Mutual Investment Group, one of the country's largest institutional investors, said on Tuesday. The government, led by the African National Congress and the Democratic Alliance, is trying to balance competing interests across parties and political analysts say painful tradeoffs, such as higher taxes or spending cuts, could fracture the coalition. South Africa is, however, the world's largest producer of platinum group metals - including palladium and other precious metals as well as platinum - that have rallied this year, meaning increased mining royalties could provide relief for the government ahead of its mid-term budget. "Given the role that PGMs play in revenue collection ... this could be a bit of a gift horse windfall to the government of national unity," Meryl Pick, portfolio manager at Old Mutual Investment Group, said during a briefing. She said a repeat was possible of South Africa's mining tax windfall in 2021 when revenue collections exceeded budget projections by 100 billion rand ($5.7 billion), helping to narrow the fiscal deficit. Spot platinum prices touched their highest levels since August 2014 earlier this month, extending a record second quarter rally fueled by a rise in demand and drop in supply. Some analysts have said the rally might not be sustained, given global economic uncertainty that may affect demand. But Old Mutual Investment Group analysts said prices were likely to keep rising on the basis of slower adoption of electric vehicle adoption in Western markets, steady demand for hybrid cars, and constrained mining supply due to years of underinvestment. One of the major uses for platinum and palladium is to curb emissions from vehicles that run on fossil fuels. Old Mutual has more than 400 billion rand of assets under management and its funds have a significant allocation to resources and mining shares. The commodity rally has also buoyed South Africa's other markets. South Africa's MSCI index is up more than 32% since the start of the year - double the around 16% gain in the wider MSCI EM index. South African rand edges up after coalition partner backs budget bill

JOHANNESBURG, July 22 (Reuters) - The South African rand was slightly stronger on Tuesday after the second-biggest party in the coalition government said it would vote in support of the last major piece of budget legislation. The Democratic Alliance (DA) said it would back the Appropriation Bill in parliament on Wednesday after President Cyril Ramaphosa acceded to one of its demands by firing a minister it had accused of misconduct. The budget has been held up for months by wrangling between the DA and Ramaphosa's African National Congress party. At 1515 GMT the rand traded at 17.6050 against the dollar , up 0.1% on Monday's closing level. Morgan Stanley said it had turned more bullish on South African government debt in the wake of the minister's removal, which it said had opened the door for political tensions to ease. South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond gained on Tuesday, as the yield fell 14 basis points to 9.845%. Markets reacted little to a decline in a central bank business cycle indicator that gauges the local economic outlook. The leading indicator (ZALEAD=ECI), opens new tab fell 1.3% month-on-month in May, following a 0.6% decrease in April. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange's Top-40 index (.JTOPI), opens new tab closed down 0.4%.

Aldi is launching an Olaplex haircare dupe range for £24 cheaper – & it includes a bargain £4.99 moisture mask

OLPALEX has gained a cult following - but it also comes with a rather hefty price tag. If you would rather not fork out £28 for the bonded haircare range, you may be in luck, as Aldi is bringing out a new £3.99 dupe. 7 Launching 31st July, Aldi's Lacura Bonded Haircare Collection is aiming to rival Olaplex, but for 86 per cent cheaper. Shoppers were recently devastated when their previous bonded products were discontinued, but there are five new items coming this month. Aldi claims their products are 'scientifically targeted to repair, rebuild, and protect damaged hair, from root to tip.' They added: "From colour correction to deep repair, this collection covers every step — for less than the price of a coffee and a croissant (outside of London!)' They claim the collection is the 'secret to glossy, bond-strengthened hair', and - with each product costing under a fiver - is a purse-friendly option for those on a budget. The first item in the range is the Lacura Bonded Shampoo, which costs £3.99 for a 250ml bottle. It is enriched with Glycerin, Castor, Banana, and Pomegranate Extract, and 'works to repair and strengthen hair from the very first wash.' It's also a steal, given the Olaplex Bond Maintenance Shampoo is £24.01. Follow the shampoo with the Lacura Bonded Conditioner, which is also £3.99 for 250ml - compared to the £24.01 Olaplex Bond Maintenance Conditioner. This product aims to 'fortify damaged locks with the help of Avocado and Argan Oil, resulting in a frizz-free finish.' My hair's so thin you can see my scalp but miracle £8 buy fixes it in seconds Aldi shoppers can also pick up the Lacura Pre-Wash Hair Treatment, which is a pre-shampoo treatment said to leave you with 'stronger and shinier' locks. The £3.99 product has been compared to the £24.01 Olaplex Intensive Bond Building Treatment and has extracts of Jojoba Seed Oil and Panthenol. There is also a £4.99 Lacura Bonded Moisture Mask, which has Argan Oil, Rice Bran and Hemp Seed Oil. 7 The Olaplex dupes at Aldi ALDI'S Lacura Bonded Haircare Collection claims to deliver "luxury-level results without the luxury price tag. Lacura Bonded Shampoo (£3.99, 250ml) Lacura Bonded Conditioner (£3.99, 250ml) Lacura Pre-Wash Hair Treatment (£3.99 100ml) Lacura Bonded Purple Shampoo (£3.99, 250ml) Lacura Bonded Moisture Mask (£4.99, 100ml) It is 'an intense reparative mask designed to strengthen and smooth damaged hair', and is 82 per cent cheaper than the £23.01 Olaplex Bond Intense Moisture Mask. The last new item in the Olaplex dupe range is the £3.99 Lacura Bonded Purple Shampoo, which has been compared to the £24.01 Olaplex Blonde Enhancer Toning Shampoo. It is 'formulated with violet pigments to counteract yellow and orange hues, whilst neutralising brassiness for bolder and brighter locks.' You'll have to be quick to get your hands on Aldi's Bonded Haircare Collection. Once it hits shelves on July 31, it'll be available while stocks last. It comes just weeks after Aldi confirmed it had axed a shoppers' favourite £2.99 Liz Earle beauty dupe from shelves. The discounter has stopped making the hot cloth cleanser which many said was similar to Liz Earle's £30 Cleanse and Polish cleanser. The story behind Olaplex OLAPLEX hair care products continue to hold attention in the beauty world nearly ten years after their launch. In 2014, Olaplex came to life with Dean and Darcy Christal. The company's products reportedly aim to help repair broken bonds in the hair by targeting five types of damage: chemical, heat, mechanical, environmental, and lifestyle changes. The Santa Barbara-based company started in a California garage and is now sold in over 100 countries. Olaplex Holdings Inc. was bought by the private equity firm, Advent International, in 2019. Drs. Eric Pressly and Craig Hawker developed the base formula for the product. They are credited with the "invention," - adding Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate - according to the Olaplex website. "Hair wasn't just healthier; it took on a completely different quality — blondes were brighter, brunettes more radiant, and redheads more vibrant."
