Connor McDavid contract delay raises eyebrows, but NHL Insider says Oilers are confident in long-term deal

The Edmonton Oilers have yet to make headway on a contract extension with Connor McDavid, but NHL analyst Ryan Rishaug believes there's no reason to hit the panic button. With McDavid eligible to sign a new deal as of July 1, the lack of immediate action has raised eyebrows but the pause might just be strategic.
Why Connor McDavid's contract extension delay isn't cause for alarm
Connor McDavid has one year remaining on his eight-year, $100 million contract, and Oilers fans are naturally anxious about the superstar's future. But Rishaug reassured SportsCentre viewers that the current standstill is expected—and even healthy.
General manager Stan Bowman is reportedly prioritizing free agency and trade activity, temporarily pausing extension talks. Rishaug explained that initial high-level discussions have taken place, with both sides gauging the team's long-term direction.
However, with the NHL offseason in full swing and Edmonton reshuffling its roster, serious negotiations are likely on hold until things settle down.
MJ on McDavid extension: '2 years, $32M, if we're good you get 7 years after that'
'It was a long, emotional season again for McDavid and the Oilers,' Rishaug said. 'So it wouldn't surprise me if there is a little bit of breathing room that's needed from McDavid's end to get his bearings and get settled in.'
Edmonton just wrapped up a grueling playoff run, reaching the Stanley Cup Final for the second straight year but falling short to the Florida Panthers.
McDavid, once again, carried the franchise with 100 points in 67 regular-season games and a jaw-dropping 33 points in 22 playoff appearances.
Given his performance and value, there's little doubt McDavid will become the highest-paid player in NHL history once a deal is finalized. Both he and the organization understand the stakes, and rushing into a premature agreement doesn't make sense.
Instead, the Oilers are allowing their captain the time he needs to decompress, while management reshapes the supporting cast around him.
The mutual goal remains clear, keep McDavid in Edmonton for the long haul.
While fans may crave instant updates, the silence should be viewed as a sign of patience, not panic. Rishaug's confidence in a future extension reflects the belief that both sides are aligned on the bigger picture.

With McDavid continuing to dominate the NHL and lead Edmonton deep into the postseason, it's not a question of 'if' but 'when' the deal gets done.

Aaron Rodgers' touching reunion with ‘family' member steals spotlight from celebrity golf event

Aaron Rodgers' touching reunion with 'family' member (Getty Images) As Aaron Rodgers inches closer to the twilight of his NFL career, the four-time MVP has shown that some bonds matter far more than stats or accolades. Amid a break before training camp, Rodgers made his way to the scenic setting of Lake Tahoe to participate in the annual American Century Championship, a celebrity golf tournament that's as much about connection as competition. Aaron Rodgers finds solace in unexpected bond with his 'Lake Tahoe Grandma' While Rodgers' estrangement from parts of his biological family has long been known, his affectionate reunion with a woman he fondly calls his 'Lake Tahoe grandma' turned heads for all the right reasons. The 41-year-old quarterback greeted Carol Sargent, his longtime friend, with a warm embrace and a genuine smile—offering a rare glimpse into the emotional side of the famously private athlete. Their story began nearly two decades ago when Sargent introduced herself to Rodgers at the same tournament. 'Favorite part of the year. Because we've made a really nice friendship, and we appreciate each other and nice to catch up,' Sargent told Daily Mail, highlighting the significance of their enduring bond. Despite not being related by blood, Sargent and Rodgers have shared a relationship that is deeply rooted in mutual respect and admiration. 'He's a wonderful person, so I feel very fortunate,' she continued. 'It's just been a wonderful friendship. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 기미, 레이저말고 이렇게 해보세요 에스테틱최원장 Undo He's thoughtful, he's caring. The quarterback, typically stoic and guarded in public, was visibly relaxed and cheerful—far removed from the often intense figure seen on game days. Wayne Gretzky's wife Janet Jones dragged into $1.7M mob-linked gambling scandal

Janet Jones linked to massive 2006 sports betting ring (Getty Images) In early 2006, the National Hockey League found itself blindsided by a scandal that threatened its already fragile public image post-lockout. The controversy wasn't over hits or contracts—but rather, high-stakes gambling, and it dragged "The Great One" Wayne Gretzky's family into the media storm. Janet Jones linked to massive 2006 sports betting ring in ' Operation Slap Shot ' A t the heart of the investigation, dubbed 'Operation Slap Shot,' was Janet Jones—Gretzky's wife, a former actress turned hockey royalty. Authorities alleged that Jones was one of several individuals involved in an illegal nationwide sports betting ring that was organized in part by New Jersey state trooper James Harney and former NHL player Rick Tocchet—Gretzky's top assistant coach with the Phoenix Coyotes. The accusations rocked the NHL just as it tried to rebuild fan trust after a season-long lockout. More than 1,000 bets totaling over $1.7 million were reportedly placed on professional and college football and basketball—not hockey, a distinction league officials were quick to stress. Gretzky publicly defended his wife and denied any involvement. 'First of all, my wife is my best friend,' he told reporters. 'My love for her is deeper than anything. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle Japanese hair growth method for men and women's scalp Hair's Rich Learn More Undo The reality is, I'm not involved, I wasn't involved and I'm not going to be involved.' He further denied that Jones had ever placed bets on his behalf. The case painted an uncomfortable picture. Police claimed Tocchet and Harney operated the ring, with Tocchet allegedly financing it and funneling illegal bets back to New Jersey. Tocchet, well-respected in NHL circles, was summoned to meet with league commissioner Gary Bettman and later faced charges of conspiracy, money laundering, and promoting gambling. Despite the magnitude of the investigation, both Harney and fellow accused James Ulmer were released after posting bail, while authorities seized $27,000 in cash and multiple bank accounts linked to the operation. Law enforcement also hinted at connections to organized crime in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey. 'A massive failure': Maple Leafs slammed by NHL analyst over disastrous offseason and lack of Mitch Marner replacement

NHL analyst Matt Larkin has strongly criticized the Toronto Maple Leafs' offseason moves (Getty Images) The Toronto Maple Leafs' offseason has drawn sharp criticism from NHL analyst Matt Larkin, who labeled it a "massive failure" following Mitch Marner's departure. Larkin believes new additions Matias Maccelli and Nicolas Roy can't offset the loss, despite projecting them to make the playoffs, raising concern about the team's scoring depth, defensive identity, and competitiveness in the Atlantic Division. NHL analyst torches Maple Leafs' offseason as a 'massive failure' The air around Toronto's hockey club is thick with dread following a agitated period of roster adjustments. One prominent hockey observer, Matt Larkin, didn't mince words, delivering a stern critique of the organization's summer maneuvers. He declared the team's recent strategic decisions to be "a massive failure," a sentiment that resonates with a perceptible sense of disappointment among fans and mentors alike. The void left by Mitch Marner's exit bulks large. While Larkin acknowledged that "Matias Maccelli and Nicolas Roy were savvy additions," he quickly confronted that they "don't come close to replacing Marner's production." This stark reality puts enormous strain on existing stars. As Larkin pointed out, "Now the Leafs' top-end scoring will largely depend on Auston Matthews fighting off (a) chronic injury, while they'll hope John Tavares can repeat a 38-goal season at 35 years old." The leadership, particularly General Manager Brad Treliving, is under scrutiny for not sufficiently addressing the critical need for elite wing scoring. A glimmer of hope remains for their postseason aspirations, inspite the gloomy outlook. Larkin stated, "If I'm placing a bet, I still have the Leafs making the playoffs next season – calm down – but they may slide back in a highly competitive Atlantic Division." Yet, the team's overall composition remains a worry. Larkin even interrogated their defensive solidity, suggesting last season's metrics were escalated by stellar goaltending. He concluded with a clear warning: "If they don't add another top-six forward by any means necessary between now and October, GM Brad Treliving's offseason is a massive failure." The pressure is assuredly on to utilize their remaining cap space to reinforce the roster.
