But promoter Eddie Hearn revealed the two-time heavyweight champion is on track to fight before the year ends with
He initially held talks with the American's manager Shelly Finkel over a bout with Dave Allen - but now AJ is ready to take on Wilder himself.
Hearn told SunSport at the launch of Matchroom's rebrand: "I think it's a great fight.
"I mean there's jeopardy in it, it's dangerous. Originally I was speaking to Shelly about Dave Allen.

"I kind of get the feeling that Wilder wants to get a few fights under the belt, get a bit of confidence back.
"I think it's great to see him returning, it's really important that Deontay is still in the heavyweight division.
"AJ I will be here tonight. We've just started pinging a few opponents backwards and forwards, nothing really to talk about, but you will see AJ in the ring, November or December."
Joshua, 35, and Wilder, 39, were once close to agreeing a huge undisputed title decider before rival broadcasters and promoters got in the way.

Wilder could even box in one more tune-up before jumping back into the big time - while AJ is also ready to return after giving his body a rest.
He said: "I took a year out, first time in about 12 to 13 years as a professional, not even including the amateur stuff.
"But I took a year out, get my body right. I'm at a different stage in my career where I can look at time a bit differently.
"I'm all these years in front of me like the main man here, so I gotta make like really executive decisions about what I do next.

"So the minute I come back, you know I'll come back with a bang rather than just keep rolling through and just going with the motions of the sport.
"I just thought, let me take some time out so when I do come back I come back fully active and ready to go and take the division by storm again."

Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan will collide in the first ever all-Irish world title fight this September in Belfast, promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed. The Matchroom boss says terms have been agreed for the mega-bout to take place six months on since the pair did battle at the SSE Arena in the city - and the IBF world welterweight title will be on the line. A sell-out crowd of 8,500 packed into the SSE back in March and the historic rematch could take place at Windsor Park, with a final decision on the venue expected next week. "Terms are agreed. Venue-wise, we hope to make a decision next week," Hearn told the Irish Mirror. "We want September at Windsor Park. We're doing everything we can to make it happen. "I mean, for two Irishmen to fight for the world welterweight title, we're never going to get it again. We're all systems go." Crocker was called the winner in controversial circumstances back in March when Donovan was disqualified after punching the Belfast man after the bell at the end of the eighth round. The Limerick southpaw had dominated the bout up to that stage, but had points deducted for use of the elbow and head in the sixth and eighth rounds by referee Marcus McDonnell. Donovan's trainer and former WBO world middleweight champion Andy Lee was very critical of the man in the middle afterwards, labelling his performance a "disgrace". That fight was an eliminator for the IBF title, currently held by Jaron 'Boots' Ennis, who Hearn also promotes. After an appeal was lodged from Donovan's team over the manner of the decision, the IBF ordered a rematch which again was to be a final eliminator. However, American Ennis is set to vacate the belt and move up to the light-middleweight division. And Hearn says the title will be on the line when the pair collide again, meaning it will be the first ever all-Irish world championship fight. Frank Smith, Matchroom CEO, visited Windsor Park last week to get a look at the venue that previously hosted a boxing event when Carl Frampton defeated Luke Jackson in 2018. Smith met with officials from the Irish Football Association (IFA) and said he is hopeful the NI Executive can help "in some way" with the event.

Stars return to Royal Box as Wimbledon welcomes back the sunshine
Celebrities were back in the Royal Box on Thursday as Wimbledon bounced back from a rainy midweek spell with sunshine and a packed schedule on day four. Blue skies and 24C temperatures returned to the All England Club in London after a soggy Wednesday, with fans quick to swap ponchos for sunhats and take advantage of ideal conditions on court. Among the guests in the Royal Box were adventurer Bear Grylls, broadcaster Chris Bryant and actor Rory Kinnear. Former Dragons' Den star Deborah Meaden and comedian Clive Anderson were also spotted taking in the action on Centre Court. Musician-turned-environmentalist Feargal Sharkey was seated alongside Dutch tennis legend Betty Stove, who turned 80 in April and famously reached three Wimbledon finals in 1977. They were joined by a host of sporting figures including former England rugby coach Clive Woodward, Olympic sprinter Donna Fraser, and incoming Lawn Tennis Association chairman William Jackson. Prince Michael of Kent led the royal contingent. The stars were there to see Novak Djokovic face off against British Dan Evans on Centre Court, before Iga Swiatek takes on American qualifier Caty McNally. Top seed Jannik Sinner took on Aleksandar Vukic of Australia on No 1 Court, followed by Mirra Andreeva's match against Italy's Lucia Bronzetti. Later in the day, Maria Sakkari is scheduled to play 2022 champion Elena Rybakina, and British hope Jack Draper will face former US Open winner Marin Cilic.
