Flyers' Tocchet: ‘We'd be idiots' not to try Michkov, Zegras on a line together

New York Times4 days ago

It was probably the first thought that went through every Flyers fan's head the moment they learned Trevor Zegras was coming to Philadelphia.
Is this the center that can mesh with talented young winger Matvei Michkov, giving the Flyers a high-end top line that will frustrate opposing teams for, say, the next decade or so?

Naturally, new coach Rick Tocchet has pondered that possibility, too.
'We'd be idiots not to explore it and talk about it, and try to manifest it where it can work,' Tocchet told The Athletic on Tuesday afternoon from Las Vegas, where he was wrapping up Olympic meetings with the Team Canada coaching staff. 'Can it work? I don't know.'
Tocchet, 61, has been around a little while. He personally knows a few of the game's all-time greats and what they preferred from linemates. So, when asked what has to happen for a Zegras-Michkov (and an unspecified left wing) line to have success, he drew from that base of knowledge.
'I always use (Wayne) Gretzky and (Mario) Lemieux as benchmark guys — they never liked playing on a line with guys that went east-west all the time. They felt it was really hard for them. Just as long as the chemistry with (Zegras and Michkov), if it does happen … you want them to be creative, but there's also certain things you have to do to become a good line — retrievals, driving the middle (of the ice), net-front — all that stuff. Creativity is great, but if you're just on the outside spinning your wheels, I don't think that's effective.
'You look at Florida, they play straight-line hockey. Is there a hybrid of doing both? Absolutely. We've just got to make sure we find that sweet spot.'
The suggestion is perhaps Michkov and Zegras are a little too similar in their approaches. It has merit; both like to hang onto the puck and make plays, and both could probably use a little more north-south in their games, too.
Regardless, Tocchet echoed what general manager Daniel Briere said on Monday — he is going to give Zegras an opportunity to return to playing center, where he posted back-to-back 60-point seasons early in his career. Tocchet and Zegras spoke 'at length' on Monday after the trade, said the coach, who was encouraged by Zegras's self-assessment and enthusiasm for the chance the Flyers are primed to give him.
'I definitely think it's our obligation to see if he can play center,' Tocchet said. 'He really wants to give it a shot. … He's talented making a play off his forehand or backhand, and those guys are hard to find.
'He shared a couple things with me that he was pretty honest about, where he had struggles in boxing out guys down low, and things that he wanted to work on. I thought that was really mature from him. So there's some things that I can really help him (with) in being a center. We'll see how it goes. But, yeah, I'd like to definitely give him a shot up the middle.'

And Zegras, too, voiced his delight to returning to what he called the position he played his entire career before former Ducks coach Greg Cronin shifted him to the left wing at the start of the 2023-24 season.
'I've always felt more comfortable (at center),' Zegras said in a fairly abbreviated video conference call on Tuesday. 'I think there are definitely areas I need to work on, whether it's in the faceoff circle or below the goal line, or in front of the net in the D zone. I think it was good to play the wing and learn that position and responsibilities. (We'll) see, I guess, where it goes with the new coach and the new team, but definitely will be exciting to be back in the middle for sure.'
Tocchet, of course, will have other options with Zegras if he doesn't see a fit with Michkov. Perhaps Zegras will end up better suited to a line with someone like Owen Tippett, who never really seemed to find chemistry with any of the Flyers' centers last season. Or maybe Zegras helps Travis Konecny take his game to a new level, with Konecny serving as the wrecking ball on that line and providing Zegras more time and space to do what he does best.
What is undeniable is that Tocchet has more options to fuel his offense than he did a couple days ago.
'I talked to Danny about (Zegras) for a week or two, if there was a possibility with a player like him. I told him I'd be excited if this happened,' he said. 'I coached against him all those years with Arizona and Vancouver so I kind of know his game. There's a lot of upside with Trevor. I love that he's got a good personality. I think guys like that are great in the room. But there are some things that he knows that he has to do to get back to the player he wants to be. Myself and my coaching staff, we really want to help him achieve those things.'

U.S. Soccer Fans Furious At Head Coach After Interview Rumor

U.S. Soccer Fans Furious At Head Coach After Interview Rumor originally appeared on The Spun. It's safe to say that U.S. soccer fans are not pleased with what they've seen from head coach Mauricio Pochettino so far. Between the lackluster results in games and some outright blowouts that they've suffered, fans are starting to feel that Pochettino has either mailed it in or simply isn't cut out for the job. Advertisement But those feelings may pale in comparison to how some fans feel after a recent piece of news to hit the wire. According to soccer journalist David Sneyd, Pochettino interviewed for the head coaching position at the English Premier League team Brentford F.C. The team ultimately decided to hire Keith Andrews for the job and it's unclear if Pochettino was even offered the job. "Brentford, it can be revealed, did interview the Argentinian during their search for Frank's replacement. The club, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season, also sat down with former Nottingham Forest and Leicester City boss Steve Cooper," Sneyd wrote for The 42. What's more distressing for American soccer fans is that this interview most likely took place in the middle of the ongoing CONCACAF Gold Cup - which Pochettino is continuing to coach for. Advertisement As a result, many have taken to social media to say point-blank that it's time for Pochettino to go if he's already looking elsewhere: "If Pochettino interviewed for a club job then he needs to be sacked expeditiously !!! A year from World Cup and his name is being floated around about a club job is disgraceful," one user wrote on X. "This is beyond embarrassing and disrespectful from Poch a year before the World Cup. I'd rather the USMNT play with no manager than a rat like this," wrote another. "IF the report is true that Mauricio Pochettino interviewed for a Premier League job while in charge of the #USMNT, there will be SERIOUS questions asked about his commitment to the national team position a year out from the 2026 World Cup........" a third wrote. Speaking to Doug McIntyre, he denied ever speaking to Brentford F.C. Advertisement "This club never contacted me,' Pochettino said. 'I never talked to them.' The report strained credulity even without Pochettino having publicly denied it. Between his preparations for the Gold Cup quarterfinals this weekend and the fact that he had previously denied interview requests with even bigger clubs, we can probably assume that some wires were crossed in this reporting. Erik Thommy's second-half goal helps Sporting KC earn 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Erik Thommy scored in the second half to help Sporting Kansas City earn a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. Thommy pulled Sporting KC even in the 59th minute with his third goal this season — unassisted. Real Salt Lake took a 1-0 lead into halftime when Johnny Russell scored in the first minute of stoppage time. Russell has two goals in five appearances for RSL after scoring 60 for Sporting KC from 2018-2024. Defender Alexandros Katranis collected his third assist this season after notching five in 29 appearances last season as a rookie. Jake Davis entered in the 59th minute and had two yellow cards by the 82nd, forcing Sporting KC to play shorthanded. John Pulskamp totaled eight saves in goal for Sporting KC (5-10-5). Rafael Cabral stopped three shots for Real Salt Lake (5-10-4), which was trying to win two straight matches for the first time since October. Pulskamp had four saves and Cabral two in the first half. Real Salt Lake has played in the postseason in four straight years and six of the last seven but sits seven points out of the final playoff spot. Sporting KC travels to play the Colorado Rapids on July 4. Real Salt Lake will host St. Louis City on Saturday. ___ AP soccer:

Jake Paul beats Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., another over-the-hill former champ, with ease

For the second time in less than a year, Jake Paul battered a long-past-his-prime boxing champion from yesteryear. On Saturday night, Paul defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. via unanimous decision (99-91, 97-93, 98-92) in front of an underwhelmed crowd at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The 10-round cruiserweight affair ended in Paul's sixth consecutive victory but did little to quell the notion that the YouTuber-turned-boxer is building his in-ring reputation with a fraudulent resume built on defeating big names many years removed from their heydays. Advertisement After needing little punching substance to defeat Mike Tyson in their November spectacle, Paul flashed on Saturday much of the same arsenal he's weaponized to disrupt the boxing world over the past five years: bluster on the mic, aggressive pressure in the opening rounds, and good enough footwork to tally another win, much to the frustration of another arena of fans. 'All the boos are words and action speak louder than words. So y'all can shut the f— up,' Paul said after Saturday's win, which improved his record to 12-1. 'It was flawless,' Paul said about his performance. 'I thought I did great going 10 rounds against a former world champion. He's in there with Canelo (Álvarez) and all these guys, and I embarrassed him like that.' Paul, 28, did not use his post-fight time on the mic to try and rekindle interest in a bout with Álvarez, but did call out a litany of present-day stars: Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez, Anthony Joshua, Badou Jack and Gervonta Davis. 🤣🤣🤣😩😩😩 — Badou Jack (@BadouJack) June 29, 2025 Chavez spent the first half of Saturday's fight boxing like a man unaware he could also throw punches. He didn't land a single punch in the first round. The former WBC middleweight champion — who entered the night famous for sharing a name with his legendary father and for being cannon fodder for Álvarez in 2016— mustered up enough moments in the final rounds to bring the weary crowd to its feet. But overall, Chavez spent more time in the bout complaining to the ref about legal punches from Paul than Paul has spent boxing legitimate opponents in his career. 'Jake is a good boxer,' Chavez said after the loss, but later added, 'I don't think he's ready for the champions, but he's a good fighter.' Paul and Álvarez were rumored to have been nearing a bout agreement earlier this year before Álvarez pivoted to a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season in February. As part of that deal, Álvarez will battle undisputed champion Terence Crawford in a September megafight. Advertisement Paul and Davis were also reportedly in talks for an exhibition bout this fall, but those plans fell apart after Davis and Lamont Roach fought to a draw in March, prompting a rematch. The 39-year-old Chavez last fought in July 2024, defeating former MMA fighter Uriah Hall via unanimous decision, but has now lost four of his last seven bouts dating back to 2019, a stretch that includes a 2021 loss to former UFC champ Anderson Silva, who was making his boxing debut at the age of 46. Despite that, Paul told The Athletic before Saturday's fight that taking on Chavez showcased Paul's willingness to risk his growing reputation as a boxing draw. What remains to be seen is where Paul goes from here. Will he cash in on his reputation to book a megafight of his own? Or will his path continue to be paved with the names of faded former stars from decades prior? 'Everyone wants me to fight the toughest person in the world right now, and that will happen in the next 24 to 36 months,' Paul said weeks ago. 'But I do have room to improve as a fighter, and that's the journey that I'm on.'
