Best budget SUV arrives in Aus
MG's latest addition could be one of its most important — and most impressive — to date.
The MG QS is a seven-seat SUV with a substantial size to it. It's about the same dimensionally as a Toyota Kluger, and it's aiming at buyers of that three-row family SUV, as well as the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, and others like the LDV D90, Mahindra XUV700 and Chery Tiggo 8 Pro.
The pricing pitches this one as not the cheapest, but far from the most expensive in the segment, with a starting introductory price of $46,990 drive-away for the Excite front-wheel drive model, while the Essence all-wheel drive version tested is a $50,990 drive-away option.
That's pretty decent buying for a family high-rider with a spec list like this. Standard gear in the range-topper includes 21-inch wheels, heated and cooled front seats, and perforated leather upholstery. There is an optional Stone Beige interior trim that looks awesome, too.

That's beyond the expected goodies such as three-zone climate control, a pair of 12.3-inch screens including connected services, sat nav, wireless phone connectivity and mirroring, and more. And seriously, the cabin design is pretty speccy for the cash, with the 256-colour ambient lighting helping to make it feel how you want it to. The 12-speaker Bose sound system in the top-end version helps with that, too.
Some of the controls could be better, but you do get used to the screen menus reasonably quickly – and thankfully there is a row of buttons for main climate settings down below the infotainment unit.

It's comfortable and practical upfront, and the second-row space is easily roomy enough for adults or big teens. There are overhead vents and rear climate settings, and the standard big glass sunroof has a nice effect. Parents of freshies will appreciate there are ISOFIX points in the window seats and three top-tethers, with a 60:40 split bench rear seat offering sliding capability to make it more amenable for full occupancy.
There is a nifty one-touch tilt-and-slide seat on the driver's side to allow third-row access, which is easy because the door openings are decent. No third-row child-seat anchor points is about the only cross against this car's cabin, because it has a lot of ticks.
So, what about the drive experience?

I was surprised how much I liked this thing – in fact, it feels like the most mature and well considered MG product yet, which is saying something.
What impresses most is the ride comfort, which is exceptionally good for a car on arch-filling wheels with low-profile tyres. The high-grade version gets an electronically controlled adjustable suspension that helps to iron out little bumps and cosset over larger jolts, which is important in a big car for the crew.
It feels pretty easy to drive in urban settings, with a standard surround-view camera system helping out with parking moves, and the steering is predictable if not overly thrilling.
And while a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol might seem a little undercooked for a near-two-tonne-when-empty SUV like this, it gets the job done decently. The nine-speed auto helps it feel eager at lower speeds, though I noted some 'hunting' for a correct gear at freeway speed.

Fuel use is claimed in the 8s, and over a mix of driving during a few days of urban, highway and commuting to the city from out west, I saw 9.8L/100km displayed on the dash. Not too bad! Just be mindful it needs 95RON premium juice, and the tank capacity is 65L.
There is a raft of standard active safety technology, some of which may frustrate the enthusiastic driver. The lane keeping is a bit eager, but thankfully the driver monitoring camera is timid. There's speed sign recognition which harps on a bit too much, though it might be handy if you're short on points.
Now it is worth noting that you can still get an MG with a 10-year/250,000km warranty if you maintain the car with MG's network, otherwise the brand has wound things back to seven years/unlimited km. Still very good.
The MG QS isn't the cheapest, but it is one of the best at the budget end of the seven-seat SUV spectrum.

New Tesla ‘retro-futuristic' diner could open in Australia soon
Tesla has officially opened it's highly anticipated diner in Los Angeles, which combines retro nostalgia with futurism and a version could be coming to Australia soon. Telsa CEO Elon Musk initially announced his plan to create a nostalgic drive-in restaurant, complete with roller skating and rock music, at Tesla supercharger locations in LA in 2018. Following his announcement, Tesla promptly filed a permit for the project. However the process has taken much longer than expected. Although Musk promised in 2023 that the diner would be open later that year, the restaurant chef – California food icon Eric Greenspan – wasn't revealed until earlier this year. The cool diner finally opened in LA on Monday (local time) to rave reviews. From videos published on YouTube and pictures on Musk's own X account, the stunningly aesthetic diner appears to be halfway between a flying saucer and a 1950s diner. This design aligns perfectly with Elon Musk's vision for the project when he first announced it seven years ago. According to Tesla's support page, the 24/7 Diner 'offers visitors a classic American diner experience with a retro-futuristic twist.' The Tesla Diner offers a convenient spot to grab comfort food, including burgers and fries (served in boxes shaped like Cybertrucks), as well as milkshakes, while charging a Tesla vehicle at one of 80 V4 supercharger stalls. MG 4 EV Urban: New trademark leaves door open for second electric hatch
The MG 4 isn't going anywhere, says MG Motor Australia, but it could be joined by a newer electric hatch. In late June, MG parent SAIC Motor applied to trademark the name MG 4 EV Urban with IP Australia. Such a name would be a fairly logical choice for an electric hatch MG recently revealed wearing the MG 4 nameplate, distinguishing it from the existing MG 4 that the company's local arm says isn't being discontinued. MG wouldn't confirm whether the new electric hatch had been locked in for Australian release, nor whether it could wear the MG 4 EV Urban nameplate. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new MG 4. As we continue to expand our range in Australia, It's important to maintain flexibility,' an MG Motor Australia spokesperson told CarExpert. 'No decision has been made to use this name in Australia. 'The current MG 4 is not going anywhere and no decision has been made yet on the alternate model,' the spokesperson added, when asked whether the company had locked in the new electric hatch for our market. It's worth noting that of the MG trademarks SAIC Motor has filed over the past five years, all bar one – the QS Plug-in Hybrid – has subsequently appeared on a vehicle in local showrooms. When the new MG 4 was revealed in March, MG Motor Australia said it was 'reviewing this new model and considering it for the Australian market' – something it says is still the case – and that should it come here, it wouldn't replace the current model. The spokesperson also noted the new car, despite being revealed wearing the MG 4 nameplate, rides on a different platform from the existing MG 4 which uses the rear/all-wheel drive Modular Scalable Platform shared with the MG S5 EV crossover SUV. When it first revealed the new MG 4, MG didn't show off its interior or detail any specifications. Instead, it simply said it was the brand's first global model of 2025. Subsequently, MG general manager Chen Cui has confirmed the MG 4 will become 'the world's first mass-produced semi-solid-state battery vehicle', featuring only five per cent liquid electrolyte, according to remarks published by Car News China. Short video clips published on Chinese social media have also shown off a minimalist interior in a shade of beige, featuring a large and free-standing landscape-oriented touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. A single row of buttons sits below the touchscreen, while in China at least it'll offer MG's new 'cockpit system' developed with smartphone brand Oppo but also supporting Huawei and Apple devices, allowingvoice-activated commands, gesture-based navigation and smartphone mirroring. It will reveal more about the vehicle at its official Chinese launch on August 5, 2025, ahead of Chinese sales commencing in September. In China, it'll reportedly be priced to take on the BYD Dolphin directly. A Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing, shared by Car News China, revealed the new MG 4 measures 4395mm long, 1842mm wide and 1551mm tall on a 2750mm wheelbase. That makes it 108mm longer, 6mm wider and up to 47mm taller than the current MG 4, on a 45mm longer wheelbase. Technical specifications in the filing are reportedly limited, though a single electric powertrain with a rear-mounted 120kW electric motor is listed, along with a kerb weight of 1485kg. The new hatch uses a 70kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Despite featuring a front bumper and tail-lights inspired by the Cyberster, the new hatch is much more softly styled than the existing MG 4 which is no longer offered in China but remains popular in markets such as Australia and Europe. The softer styling is complemented by new pastel green and purple exterior finishes, though MG has also shown off a bright red MG 4 on Weibo with black stripes. The current MG 4 may not have been a hit in China, but in the first half of 2025 it was Australia's fifth best-selling EV. MG delivered 2268 examples, well ahead of the rival BYD Dolphin (1337) despite a sales drop of 18.2 per cent from the same period last year.
