Company Manager Loses Over RM260,000 To WhatsApp Investment Scam
Seri Alam police chief Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the police received a report on the incident yesterday after the 39-year-old victim realised he had been cheated.
'The victim said the incident began last April when he came across a stock investment advertisement on WhatsApp that promised lucrative returns within a short period,' he said.
'Interested, the victim made 16 transactions into two different bank accounts between April 25 and July 4, amounting to a total of RM262,669,' he said in a statement.
Mohd Sohaimi said the victim was later asked to make an additional payment purportedly for the withdrawal of investment profits, but no returns were received.
He said the victim realised he had been scammed after all efforts to recover the investment money failed.
'Initial investigations using the Semak Mule platform by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) found that one of the bank accounts used in the transactions had a prior police report linked to an investment fraud case,' he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud. Police will also conduct further investigations into the use of mule accounts, with appropriate action to be taken against the account holders involved.
He urged the public to exercise caution with investment schemes that promise high returns in a short time and to verify the legitimacy of companies through the Securities Commission Malaysia and the Semak Mule portal before making any transactions.

Rally Ends Peacefully Without Incident
KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) -- The rally at Dataran Merdeka today concluded peacefully without any untoward incident with about 18,000 individuals attending. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said they were grateful for the good cooperation shown by participants, who did not create any problems throughout the rally. 'Everything went smoothly, even though there were one or two things that might not have been agreed upon initially, but were resolved well,' he told reporters after the rally ended this evening. He also advised the organisers to be more transparent in sharing information with the authorities in the future to ease security and logistic controls. 'Malaysians have the right to gather, and to gather peacefully. In terms of safety, that's the most important. Sometimes if we don't allow an event, it usually is due to a safety issue, as that is a responsibility of the police,' he said, adding that 3,000 police officers and personnel were mobilised to ensure safety throughout the duration of the rally. Mohamed Usof also said the police would study the speeches delivered by several leaders at the rally, especially if there were elements touching on 3R (religion, race, royalty) or seditious in nature. 'The right to gather peacefully is there, but we are still bound by existing laws. If there are violations, action will be taken according to legal provisions,' he said, adding that there were over 60 reports lodged regarding the rally, mostly by those who disagreed with it being organised. Make SSPN Primary Incentive Scheme For Staff, Students
KOTA KINABALU, July 26 (Bernama) -- State governments and public and private agencies are encouraged to prioritise the National Education Savings Scheme (Simpan SSPN) as the main option for incentives to employees and students. Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said Simpan SSPN, managed by the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), is crucial in ensuring access to education is not hindered by financial constraints. 'Since 2004, PTPTN has focused on promoting savings to reduce dependence on loans. Over two decades, Simpan SSPN has maintained strong performance each year and gained public trust,' he said when officiating the Simpan SSPN Heritage Children's Carnival (KAWAN) 2025 here today. Mustapha said total deposits under Simpan SSPN reached RM21.93 billion across 6.98 million accounts as of June 30, a milestone reflecting consistent support since its launch in 2004. He urged parents to consider Simpan SSPN as the preferred savings vehicle to secure their children's education. 'Saving for education is a long-term investment that ensures our children's future,' he said, adding deposits in Sabah alone amounted to RM689.84 million from more than 500,000 accounts. Regarding KAWAN 2025, Mustapha described it as a progressive initiative to foster a savings culture among the younger generation while promoting creativity and appreciation of cultural heritage. He also encouraged parents to leverage the programme as financial preparation for their children's pursuit of higher education. Meanwhile, PTPTN chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim said depositors enjoy various benefits under Simpan SSPN, including income tax relief of up to RM8,000 annually.
