He stated that the project holds the potential to influence the socio-economic landscape of the state in a substantive manner. He said that Assam has enjoyed a relatively peaceful environment over the past four years and underscored the importance of such stability in facilitating long-term development. Emphasising the inter-relationship between industrial expansion and economic stability, he noted its role in shaping the aspirations of younger generations.
Referring to the Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit, the Chief Minister reiterated its intent to develop a favourable climate for investment in the state. In response to this initiative, Jonali Constructions Private Limited committed to undertake the development of two hotel properties in proximity to the Guwahati Airport. Target has another big problem amid alarming customer behavior

Target (TGT) , which has almost 2,000 stores nationwide, is struggling to shake a concerning shift in customer behavior that has significantly impacted its sales for several financial quarters. In Target's first-quarter earnings report for 2025, it revealed that its comparable store sales dipped by 3.8% year-over-year. Also, according to recent data from the number of customers visiting Target stores per location shrank by 4.8% year-over-year during the quarter. Related: Target announces generous offers to win back customers The pullback from consumers comes at a time when many are battling inflation and are concerned that tariffs will further increase prices for everyday goods. Also, Target recently faced backlash for scaling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, which sparked several consumer boycotts. During an earnings call in May, Target CEO Brian Cornell said the company is operating in an "exceptionally challenging environment," with several factors negatively impacting business. "For several years now, we've seen pressure in our discretionary businesses, as spending adjusted down from elevated levels during the pandemic and then moved further away in the face of historically high inflation in needs-based categories," said Cornell. "On top of those ongoing challenges, we faced several additional headwinds this quarter, including five consecutive months of declining consumer confidence, uncertainty regarding the impact of potential tariffs, and the reaction to the updates we shared on Belonging in January." Image source: Universal Images Group via Getty Images Just last month, Target faced a major boycott from consumers, organized by The People's Union USA, for its DEI cuts. Now, another big group is threatening to make a similar move. On June 26, the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) met with Target CEO Brian Cornell to discuss the retailer's decision to roll back its DEI policies in January. The cuts resulted in Target discontinuing its three-year DEI goals and Racial Equity Action and Change initiatives, which launched in 2020 and included advancing the careers of Black employees, instituting anti-racism training for staff members, promoting Black-owned businesses, and sourcing products from Black suppliers. Through these initiatives, Target also pledged to donate $1 million to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation over five years. Since 2020, the retailer has donated at least $1.4 million to the foundation. The CBC said in a recent press release that the conversation with Cornell was "candid and direct." However, it warned him that "efforts to restore consumer and public trust without genuine action and accountability" would risk causing "lasting damage" to Target's "brand and credibility." Related: Home Depot, Amazon, Starbucks suffer major boycott from customers During the meeting, the group demanded that Target recommit to DEI in a public forum and reinstate DEI policies that were "eliminated or rolled back." The CBC also demanded an update on the status of financial investments and other publicly pledged policies, as well as details of Target's workforce diversity, business supplier diversity, and community investment. However, the CBC is supporting a boycott of Target after the conversation with the company's leadership yielded disappointing results. "Like many of the coalition leaders and partner organizations that have chosen to boycott their stores across the country, we found that the explanations offered by the leadership of the Target Corporation fell woefully short of what our communities deserve and of the values of inclusion that Target once touted," said the CBC in the press release. The CBC also highlighted that Black consumers have a significant impact on Target's "bottom line." "Black consumers contribute overwhelmingly to our economy and to the Target Corporation's bottom line," said the CBC. "Our communities deserve to shop at businesses that publicly share our values without sacrificing our dignity. It is no longer acceptable to deliver promises to our communities in private without also demonstrating those values publicly." The CBC's boycott threat comes after Cornell has been ramping up his efforts to address the backlash over Target's DEI cuts. In April, Cornell met with the Rev. Al Sharpton to advert another potential Target boycott over DEI cuts. He also emphasized that Target's values of "inclusivity, connection, drive" are "not up for debate" and said that the company is "committed" to sharing how its values create an impact. "The world around us is noisier and more complicated, but that doesn't change who we are," said Cornell. Did Trump strike a deal with China about TikTok? Here's what we know

U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to discuss a potential TikTok deal with China this week, and the United States "pretty much" has a deal on the sale of the TikTok short-video app. "I think we're gonna start Monday or to China, perhaps President Xi or one of his representatives, but we would, we pretty much have a deal," Trump told reporters on Air Force One en route to Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, New Jersey on Independence Day. A deal to spin off TikTok's U.S. operations into a new U.S.-based firm, majority-owned and operated by U.S. investors, was in the works earlier this year, but it was put on hold after China indicated it would not approve it following Trump's announcement of steep tariffs on Chinese goods. When asked how confident he was that China would agree to a deal, he said, "I'm not confident, but I think so. President Xi and I have a great relationship, and I think it's good for them. I think the deal is good for China and it's good for us." Here's the latest on what we know regarding a potential TikTok ban in the U.S. and a possible sale of the app. Will TikTok be banned?: Trump says there's 'a group of very wealthy people' lined up to buy it Will TikTok be banned in the U.S.? Trump last month extended the deadline for a TikTok ban to take effect, allowing the Chinese-owned social media platform to continue operating for 90 days. Trump signed the executive order on June 19, marking the third time the president has authorized a delay. The extension gives ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, until Sept. 17 to secure a deal that satisfies a legal requirement. Who is buying TikTok? In a June interview on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo," Trump confirmed that his administration had identified a group of buyers for TikTok and would announce their names soon. "We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way," Trump said. "I think I'll need probably China's approval. I think President Xi will probably do it." He said the buyer is "a group of very wealthy people" without providing additional details. Contributing: Sarah D. Waymo to begin testing in Philadelphia with safety drivers behind the wheel

Waymo said it will begin testing in Philadelphia, with a limited fleet of vehicles and human safety drivers behind the wheel. "This city is a National Treasure," Waymo wrote in a post on X on Monday. "It's a city of love, where eagles fly with a gritty spirit and cheese that spreads and cheese that steaks. Our road trip continues to Philly next." The Alphabet-owned company confirmed to CNBC that it will be testing in Pennsylvania's largest city through the fall, adding that the initial fleet of cars will be manually driven through the more complex parts of Philadelphia, including downtown and on freeways. "Folks will see our vehicles driving at all hours throughout various neighborhoods, from North Central to Eastwick, and from University City to as far east as the Delaware River," a Waymo spokesperson said. With its so-called road trips, Waymo seeks to collect mapping data and evaluate how its autonomous technology, Waymo Driver, performs in new environments, handling traffic patterns and local infrastructure. Road trips are often used a way for the company to gauge whether it can potentially offer a paid ride share service in a particular location. The expanded testing, which will go through the fall, comes as Waymo aims for a broader rollout. Last month, the company announced plans to drive vehicles manually in New York for testing, marking the first step toward potentially cracking the largest U.S. city. Waymo applied for a permit with the New York City Department of Transportation to operate autonomously with a trained specialist behind the wheel in Manhattan. State law currently doesn't allow for such driverless operations. Waymo One provides more than 250,000 paid trips each week across Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin, Texas, and is preparing to bring fully autonomous rides to Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, D.C., in 2026. Alphabet has been under pressure to monetize artificial intelligence products as it bolsters spending on infrastructure. Alphabet's "Other Bets" segment, which includes Waymo, brought in revenue of $1.65 billion in 2024, up from $1.53 billion in 2023. However, the segment lost $4.44 billion last year, compared to a loss of $4.09 billion the previous year.
