Woodburn: Beautiful mosaic of memorial rocks
Others have hearts of stone.
And then there is a recent visitor to Ventura, a man of Baby Boomer age and reportedly from New York, who was caught on video proving he suffers from both sedimentary maladies.
Imagine a vandal toppling gravestones in a cemetery and you get an idea of what this king of jerks from Queens did at the memorial rock garden that graces a raised cement planter along our beach promenade.
Specifically, The Jerk ruthlessly threw into the ocean some of the beautiful rocks decorated to honor lost loved ones. Watching the detestable act, posted widely on social media, made my heart feel like it had been stung by a hundred jellyfish.
If you have never visited this special garden of stones, you are missing out. It is one of the loveliest little jewels of a place you can image, affording a view of the ocean and the music of breaking waves and this sunny greeting on a tiny sign: 'Welcome to Haole's Memorial Rock Garden / Please leave memorial rocks for all to enjoy!'
Haole was a dog, a Yellow Lab albeit with white fur, who was famous because he surfed. Indeed, Haole once appeared on 'Good Morning America' and also stars in a book, 'Ride the Wave: Love Sofia and Haole the Surf Dog,' which is the true story of how he helped teach a little girl with Down syndrome to 'walk on water.'
After Haole died five summers past, the memorial garden was planted with its first rock and today blooms with many hundreds, if not a thousand or more. The mini-markers come in many sizes and shapes, although most are round or oval, and more than a few are heart-shaped. Almost all are pleasingly smooth as if selected with great care.
What makes these stones true gems is they are hand-painted with flowers and hearts, sunsets and rainbows, paw prints and palm trees, angel wings and crosses, with R.I.P. wishes and other heartwarming messages along with the names of loved ones — pets, yes, but also human moms and dads and spouses and siblings and friends. Many are true works of art and all are works from the heart.
Together, this colorful avalanche creates a mosaic worthy of comparison to a stained glass window in a church, which is fitting because this comely corner of the seaside seems like an outdoor temple. As such, it is common to see people — pedestrians and cyclists and rollerbladers; alone and in couples and small groups — stop and visit, pause and ponder, remember and pray. Some search for the rocks they have previously left here while others leave new stones now.
One rock in Haole's memorial garden is especially dear to me because I know its honoree as well as the artist, my 6-year-old granddaughter, who lovingly decorated it. When Maya learned that my good friend Nick's dog recently crossed the rainbow bridge, she found a stream-polished rock, palm-sized and oval; cleaned it and painted on swirls of deep blue and sea-glass green, and added white stars; then, in her neatest kindergarten printing, in black marker wrote: 'Henry.'
Coincidentally, Henry's rock was placed at the southernmost tip of Haole's garden, precisely where The Jerk committed his briny desecration. I went to check and was relieved to find 'Henry' still resting in peace in view of the Ventura Pier. I hope the memorial stones that were tossed into the ocean can be, or have been, retrieved at low tide.
One Jerk cannot wipe out Haole's four-legged legacy.

"I feel like we made a lot of mistakes," Rhimes said about the series. "Not in a bad -- like, I don't feel any of the mistakes -- were a problem. Whatever came from those mistakes turned out to be fantastic." Beers added, "We were the last show picked up and we were mid-season. What did we have to lose? Because no one was paying any attention." Beers said at the time that "Grey's Anatomy" first premiered in March 2005 on ABC, it was also the year of "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost," which she added were "already two big megahits." Despite the apprehension they shared before diving into the series, "Grey's Anatomy" became the longest-running medical drama in American TV history. "For me, that's a really personal feeling to feel like I've made something up and people are embracing it in this way," Rhimes said about how the show has been received by audiences. Rhimes echoed Beers' sentiments about the show and said how "amazed" she is by how people have told her that it's "helped them save somebody in their family's life." "It happens a lot," she said. "I'm also amazed at how many young women can say they were gonna go into the sciences or they're doctors," she added. "It was because of Meredith Grey, which is amazing." Rhimes and Beers teamed up out of a shared frustration toward the television industry. Beers said at the time, they noticed a "gap" in television. "We didn't see anything that looked or acted like us," she said. Rhimes said, "There were no women who felt like real women on television at that point in time." She added, "We were like, 'Where are all the competitive, mean-spirited, fun, well-meaning women out there?" With "Grey's Anatomy" rewriting the rules of primetime, the duo expanded the "Shondaverse" with more shows, including "Scandal," "How to Get Away With Murder," "Station 19," " Bridgerton" and "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story." All are led by women protagonists. When it comes to choosing the next story, Rhimes and Beers said that timing matters. "I feel like right now we're tryin' to mine a lot more joy and a lot more enjoyment," Rhimes said. "Because I feel like people want to escape a little bit from the realities of eggs being too high and all kinds of other things." Beers added that whatever the next project is, she knows it will include a lot of "fun."

3 summer fruit boards to make for your next party
With summer gatherings in full swing, a vibrant board full of fresh, seasonal fruit can be a perfect addition whether you're hosting or need to bring a dish to share. Delish editorial director Joanna Saltz joined ' Good Morning America ' on Tuesday to show her colorful and creative ideas to assemble the perfect combinations of fruit and other ingredients onto one beautifully displayed board. Check out the recipes below for a peach, melon and burrata board, a berries and cream charcuterie board, and a red, white and blue cheese and fruit board. Peach, Melon and Burrata Board Ingredients Peaches (2-3 peaches, depending on the size of your board) Mint sprigs on peaches Burrata (2 large balls for each row; two containers of burrata) Prosciutto Cherries (large bag) can do different types if available Row of basil Heirloom tomatoes Castelvetrano olives Burrata (2 large balls for each row; two containers of burrata) Prosciutto Cantaloupe Honeydew melon Directions 1. Prep your produce 2. Cut heirloom tomatoes into uniform quarters, then toss in a little olive oil, salt and pepper. 3. Cut peaches into similar-sized quarters as the tomatoes. 4. Pit and slice cherries. 5. Start placing the various produce in lines on the board. Again, this is where you can play around with what you like and want to feature. Do you love burrata and want three rows instead of two? Go for it! 6. Be sure to cut the burrata balls on the board just before serving so the creamy layer stays in the mozzarella outer shell and doesn't get too runny. 7. Season the burrata with salt and olive oil drizzled over your burrata. 8. Arrange your prosciutto -- you can lay it flat or I like to cut it up into smaller bites that are easy to grab for guests. 9. For the basil-only include full basil leaves that look really fresh and healthy. Place mint with peaches for a sweeter bite. Note that mint wilts very easily, so place on the board last, ideally right before serving. 10. You can do any kind of olives; we have Castelvetrano olives here, which are a bright, crunchy option. 11. Finish off with melon, a classic combo with prosciutto -- we have Cantaloupe and Honeydew here. Tips: 1. Everyone loves charcuterie boards because you can pile them high with so many tastes and textures! 2. The possibilities are endless and there's been a recent explosion of more fruit-forward or fruiterie boards, if you will, where fruits are the focus. 3. Any kind of fruit will work, from berries to melons. You can serve with dips or add cheese and meats to round it out for a more savory option, or create a dessert board. 4. The key is to have fun with it! Fruiterie boards are such a fun way to be creative and play around with the design. This DIY dessert spread is an ideal summer treat to beat the heat and super simple to put together. 3. Using a star-shaped cookie cutter, cut baked goods into star shapes. You can use store-bought to save time and not have to deal with the oven! 4. Rinse fruit and pat dry with paper towels. Place a bowl of whipped ricotta on a platter alongside baked goods. 5. Then you just arrange fruit by color around the bowls. 6. You want to pile up your board so it looks plentiful. 7. One thing I like to do is also have extra berries and baked goods prepped and ready to go to replenish. Or if you are having a really large party, make an extra plate to have prepped and ready to go. Red, White and Blue Cheese and Fruit Board Ingredients Watermelon, triangles, rind on Peaches sliced with skin on Blackberries Raspberries (upper left) Brie wheels with imprinted with stars - (will let stylist figure out where to place) Red grapes Bocconicini (small mozz balls) - or cubed provolone In small bowls - dried lemon slices and/or dried cherries Salami slices Circle crackers Tips: 1. This is the perfect board for your 4th of July celebrations. It's got something for everyone and because it's all about grouping the colors together, you can decide how you want to arrange them within the color group. It's more free-form in terms of building. 2. As you start building, I like to start with the bigger fruit like these watermelon triangles and lay them down since they add structure and almost a wall to build around. 3. Again, this is the fun part where you then group things together and play around with what looks good to you. So you can see we grouped the raspberries, peach slices with the skin on (facing up) and then you can build from there. ‘Good Morning America' Launches '50 States In 50 Weeks: America The Beautiful' Yearlong Series
EXCLUSIVE: In honor of its 50th anniversary and the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, ABC News' Good Morning America has launched a new yearlong series, 50 States in 50 Weeks: America the Beautiful. The weekly series kicks off on July 3 from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, the first state to join the Union, and will run through July 2026.
