Community radio station goes digital with DAB launch and studio upgrade
Unity 101 in Southampton is now broadcasting on DAB digital radio across Hampshire and parts of Dorset following a ten-year extension to its broadcasting licence from Ofcom.
The station, which first went on air in 2005, is run entirely by volunteers and serves as a voice for Asian and ethnic communities in the region.
Programming is offered in multiple languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Polish, Mandarin, Tamil, and English.
Ram Kalyan "Kelly," station manager and founder, said: "It's an exciting time for Unity 101.
"The new studio brings us into the next phase of community broadcasting – and with DAB, we can now reach audiences across a wider regional area.
"We're still the same trusted voice, just on a bigger stage."

Listeners in Portsmouth, Winchester, Basingstoke, and Poole can now tune in more easily, broadening the station's reach.
The recent studio upgrade includes modern broadcast desks and production equipment designed to support higher-quality live radio, podcasts, and remote interviews.
Chayya Thanki, a drive time presenter who has volunteered with Unity 101 for a decade, said: "It feels lovely to be presenting to a wider audience.
"People used to come up to me and say they couldn't get Unity 101 in their area.
"Now I guess they'll be happy to know they can tune in on DAB."
Unity 101 offers in-house radio training for its volunteers and provides hands-on broadcasting experience to schools, colleges, and public sector organisations.
Its programming features a mix of afrobeats, Bollywood, bhangra, soul, and world music, as well as cultural shows, celebrity interviews, community news, and discussions on topical issues.
Regular contributors include the NHS, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, Hampshire Constabulary, and local arts organisations.
Ram said: "The future is full of potential.

"We invite everyone in Hampshire and Dorset to tune in and discover what community radio really sounds like."

Birmingham tributes to Ozzy Osbourne will be taken down and given to his family
Tributes left for Ozzy Osbourne in his home city of Birmingham are to be taken down and given to the late star's family. Birmingham City Council has started the process of removing thousands of tributes in honour of the Black Sabbath rocker following his death last month at the age of 76. Fans had flocked to the city to pay their respects to Ozzy as flowers, keepsake items and handwritten notes were left at Black Sabbath Bridge - a spot that marks the Paranoid band's formation. The council says that the tributes will be preserved at a secure location before being passed on to Ozzy's loved ones. It stated: "In due course, they will be passed on the Osbourne family, so they may keep them as a lasting reminder of the public's affection and support." A concert ticket from 1995 featured among the tributes, which also included artwork and beer cans. Kate Brazier, head of city centre events at the council, said: "We've found all sorts - artwork, cans of beer and candles. We've found a box of tea with a message that says, 'Just in case you can't find a cuppa in heaven.' "But for me, the one that stands out the most is (the concert ticket) that someone's left a message on. It probably meant a lot to someone at one point in their life." Ozzy's family viewed the tributes during his funeral procession in the city last week and said they were "deeply moved" by the affection the public had for the Prince of Darkness - who had played his final gig with Black Sabbath at Birmingham's Villa Park stadium just 17 days prior to his death. A statement read: "We are deeply moved by the heartfelt tributes that have been placed at the Black Sabbath Bridge and at the Black Sabbath mural on Navigation Street in recent days. "These expressions of remembrance reflect the profound impact that Ozzy had on the city and its people, as well as fans from around the world - BIRMINGHAM FOREVER!" Lord Mayor of Birmingham Zafar Iqbal said: "We understand how important it is for the community to have a space to grieve and celebrate Ozzy's legacy. "We know fans will continue to pay their respects at the Black Sabbath Bridge and the mural on Navigation Street, as well as visiting the Ozzy exhibition."

Stella Rimington, first woman to lead UK's MI5 dies at 90
Stella Rimington, the first woman to head the UK's domestic secret service MI5, has died at the age of 90, the spy agency announced on Monday. Rimington, who led MI5 from 1992 to 1996, was widely believed to be the inspiration behind the female role of M in the James Bond movies, played by UK star Judi Dench. She was the first director general of the intelligence service who was publicly named, as before Rimington's appointment in 1992, MI5 chiefs were never officially identified or photographed. Publication of her identity caused a press frenzy. "As the first avowed female head of any intelligence agency in the world, Dame Stella broke through long-standing barriers and was a visible example of the importance of diversity in leadership," the current MI5 director general Ken McCallum said in a statement. "Her leadership ushered in a new era of openness and transparency about the work MI5 does to keep this country safe, a legacy that continues to this day." MCallum presented his condolences to Rimington's husband, two daughters, and her whole family after her death on Sunday. In a statement, her family said: "She died surrounded by her beloved family and dogs and determinedly held on to the life she loved until her last breath." Born on May 13, 1935, in the southern London district of South Norwood, Rimington was first employed as a part-time typist at the British embassy in Delhi, having accompanied her diplomat husband to India. She then joined MI5 in a full-time post in 1969. Dubbed the "housewife superspy", the agency said Rimington had held various roles including in counter-subversion, counter-espionage and counter-terrorism. During her time as director general, the agency "underwent far-reaching transformation", the statement said. It also moved its headquarters and "instituted a policy of greater public openness to demystify the work of MI5, including beginning a programme of releasing MI5 files to The National Archives". But Rimington triggered controversy when she published her memoirs "Open Secret" in 2001 after her retirement, with some accusing her of treason and MI5 of trying to block the publication. "It was quite upsetting because suddenly you go from being an insider to being an outsider and that's quite a shock," she told The Guardian daily newspaper at the time. But she added: "I've never been one to retreat at the first whiff of gunshot." Another woman, Eliza Manningham-Butler, took up the helm of MI5 between 2002-2007.
