Umno leaders must explain unity govt role to members says Khaled
KUALA TERENGGANU: Umno delegates and branch leaders must continue engaging with grassroots members to explain the party's participation in the Unity Government formed after the 15th General Election (GE15), said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He said that while the collaboration is gradually gaining acceptance, some members at the grassroots level remain confused or disillusioned. 'Since Barisan Nasional's (BN) defeat in the 2018 general election, no single party has dominated the national political landscape. Umno, too, has contested only as part of a coalition,' he said when officiating the Kuala Terengganu Umno Division Delegates' Meeting today. Also present were Terengganu Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Rozi Mamat and division chief Datuk Mohd Sabri Alwi. Mohamed Khaled, who is also Defence Minister, stressed that Umno remains committed to its founding principles, particularly the defence of Malay rights and privileges. He said the party had set clear conditions before joining the Unity Government, including recognition of Malay leadership. 'Our strategy may have shifted, but our values and principles remain unchanged even in cooperation with DAP. 'There's no need for doubt. Umno's ideology is rooted in the party's constitution. DPM Fadillah to brief GPS, GRS MPs on current national issues
KUCHING: Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof will brief MPs from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) on current national issues, following a recent closed-door meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs. The Deputy Prime Minister said the briefings are important to ensure all MPs in the unity government are well-informed on matters discussed in Cabinet. "For GPS, we have no issue. With our small number of MPs, I can engage with them directly. These matters were discussed in Cabinet, so I know what needs to be clarified. "If the Prime Minister were to meet all MPs individually, time would be limited. I can assist by briefing GPS and GRS MPs," he told reporters after attending the "AI for MY Future" programme at CENTEXS here Saturday (July 12). He was responding to questions on whether GPS MPs were involved in the Prime Minister's meeting at Seri Perdana, Putrajaya, on Friday (July 11). The meeting reportedly addressed current issues, including the upcoming Parliamentary sitting. Fadillah said a full briefing session for GPS and GRS MPs would be held soon. "A retreat involving all unity government MPs, including ministers and deputy ministers, is scheduled for next week. We'll use that platform to provide further explanation," he said. He also confirmed he will be in Sabah on Sunday (July 13) for a meeting of the Technical Committee under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 Implementation Action Council (JKMTPMA63), adding that it does not involve any political agenda. - Bernama

Anwar defends Brazil visit as crucial for Malaysia's economic growth
KUALA TERENGGANU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied claims that his recent visit to Brazil to attend the BRICS Summit was merely for 'leisure', stressing that it was an important effort to foster global economic cooperation. He said every official visit he undertook was aimed at generating economic returns for the country, and not for leisure as alleged by certain quarters. 'We do not travel just for sightseeing. During meetings and engagements, we use every opportunity to meet (with leaders and stakeholders to strengthen relationships and cooperation),' he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 in Terengganu today. The Finance Minister said Malaysia's strategic cooperation with Brazil had greatly benefited the country, including Petronas being granted access to the largest oil platform in Brazil. As for the frequency of his and several ministers' attendance at various ASEAN meetings and negotiations recently, Anwar said these were not merely symbolic but had led to concrete results, including Terengganu being selected as the hub for a new green hydrogen energy initiative. He said the project in Tasik Kenyir was highly significant as it aligned with the region's major agenda to implement the ASEAN Power Grid, which would connect cross-border electricity supply from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore through undersea cables. 'This energy production can only be realised through the cooperation of ASEAN, the Federal Government, and state governments. It will certainly position Malaysia as a major energy producer in the region,' he said. Anwar added that with the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology centres, which demand significantly higher energy and water capacities than typical industries, it was crucial for Malaysia to support and help realise the ASEAN Power Grid initiative. He also said Malaysia was increasingly respected on the global stage, as demonstrated by the extraordinary participation of major powers in recent ASEAN meetings, indicating confidence in the country's stability and economic potential. Anwar noted that while ASEAN meetings involved 10 member countries as well as Timor Leste, the attendance of major powers such as Japan, the United States, Russia, and Turkiye was a remarkable show of support for the platform. 'This is because they see Malaysia as a peaceful, united nation with great potential for trade cooperation,' he said. - Bernama
