Salt Lake City Bets on Olympics to Spur Economic Overhaul

Bloomberg3 days ago
Salt Lake City is betting on the 2034 Winter Olympics to jumpstart a lasting economic transformation. Local governments and agencies issued more than $4 billion of municipal bonds this year, fueling a surge of development across the city, including an overhaul of its sports and entertainment arena, the Delta Center, and the area surrounding it.
Some economists, however, question the long-term benefits of hosting the games, decrying potential gains as 'exaggerated' or, worse, 'nonexistent.' While investment is rolling in to boost tourism, Utah's housing shortage stands to constrain the region's economic growth. There are just 30 affordable and available homes for every 100 'extremely low-income' renter households statewide, and in Salt Lake City, the median home price has surpassed half a million dollars, putting homeownership out of reach for most residents, Arvelisse Bonilla Ramos reports. Man City set to re-sign Trafford for £27m

Manchester City are set to re-sign English goalkeeper James Trafford for £27m, two years after he left to join Burnley. The 22-year-old City academy graduate signed for the Clarets in July 2023 in deal worth up to £19m with add-ons. He impressed last season as Scott Parker's side won promotion back to the Premier League keeping 29 clean sheets across 45 Championship games and was named in the division team of the year. City had a buy-back clause for Trafford but also matching rights, allowing them to match any offer from another club. They have done so following a £27m bid from Newcastle and Trafford has opted for a return to Etihad Stadium. He will be the fourth goalkeeper at City manager Pep Guardiola's disposal, with Ederson, Stefan Ortega and Marcus Bettinelli already at the club. It is anticipated Trafford will challenge Brazil international Ederson, who has been first-choice goalkeeper for eight years, for the number one spot. Ederson is in the final year of his contract and has been linked with a move to Galatasaray but City haven't received any bids for him yet, while there are doubts about German Ortega. Trafford signed for City's academy in 2015 but never made a first-team appearance and spent time on loan at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers. Trafford is expected to sign a five-year contract at Etihad Stadium with the option for another year. More to follow. Hawks raid City Power Joburg HQ in R500m corruption investigation

The Hawks have raided City Power's Johannesburg headquarters as part of an investigation into alleged fraud and corruption worth more than R500 million at the municipal entity. News24 has seen the investigation's internal documents, which show that Tshifularo Mashava, the City of Johannesburg-owned company's CEO, is the Hawks' main target in connection with the procurement corruption investigation. On Friday, law enforcement officers seized IT equipment and documents related to alleged tender-related graft, including gross inflation of prices and the payment of contractors for work not done, as detailed in the investigation documents. Mashava has been at the helm of the municipal entity since June 2022. During her tenure, she oversaw what the Auditor-General flagged as financial mismanagement and a collapse of the City's electricity grid, which left City Power with a negative R16.3-billion bank balance as at 30 September 2024. An ongoing News24 investigation titled Power Connections also unearthed that the alleged mismanagement resulted in City Power making a R2.8-billion loss in the 2023/24 financial year ending 30 June 2024.
