Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. was arrested and will be deported, federal officials say
The arrest comes only days after the former middleweight champion fought in a match against Jake Paul in Anaheim, California. The Department of Homeland Security said Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers detained Chávez for overstaying a tourist visa that expired in February 2024 after he entered the country in August 2023. US Citizenship and Immigration Services flagged ICE about Chávez last year, saying he is an egregious public safety threat, and yet he was allowed back into the country January 4 of this year, the agency said. Officials said he has an active arrest warrant in Mexico for his involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives and is believed to be an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel.
ICE agents arrested Chávez in Studio City, California, on July 2. The Associated Press was unable to contact Chavez for comment, nor a lawyer who represented him previously. The administration said Chavez applied for a green card on April 2, 2024, based on his marriage to a US citizen who is connected to the Sinaloa Cartel through a prior relationship with the now-deceased son of imprisoned cartel leader Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman. The agency said he had submitted multiple fraudulent statements on his application, which led to his arrest.
Chávez had fought just once since 2021 before his bout with Paul, having fallen to innumerable lows during a lengthy boxing career conducted in the shadow of his father, one of the most beloved athletes in Mexican history. The son has failed drug tests, served suspensions, and egregiously missed weight while being widely criticized for his intermittent dedication to the sport. He still rose to its heights, winning the WBC middleweight title in 2011 and defending it three times. Chávez shared the ring with generational greats Canelo Álvarez and Sergio Martinez, losing to both.

Cubs starter Jameson Taillon goes on injured list, will miss more than a month with calf strain
Chicago Cubs starter Jameson Taillon may miss more than a month with a right calf strain, manager Craig Counsell said Friday after the team placed the veteran right-hander on the injured list. Taillon is 7–6 with a 4.44 ERA and a mainstay in the NL Central leaders' rotation despite some ups and downs in his ninth major league season. The 33-year-old has lost three straight games with a 10.66 ERA in that span after winning five in a row. Taillon, who had been scheduled to start Saturday, sustained the injury while running after a bullpen session on Thursday. 'He felt a grab yesterday,' Counsell said. 'He's going to miss a pretty significant amount of time.' The IL move is retroactive to Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled lefty Jordan Wicks from Triple-A Iowa before their game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Wicks is expected to work from the bullpen, although 11 of his 12 appearances for Iowa were starts. He was 1–3 with one save and a 4.06 ERA with the Triple-A affiliate. Wicks appeared in two games with the Cubs in April, pitching two innings and going 0–1 with a 13.50 ERA. 'He's got to come up here and attack the strike zone and get himself in favorable counts … to be effective,' Counsell said. Taillon's injury left the Cubs scrambling to plug another hole in their rotation. Left-hander Justin Steele, an All-Star in 2023 with a 16–5 record, made only four starts this season before undergoing elbow surgery that will sideline him for the rest of 2025. Lefty Shota Imanaga has won two starts since returning from a hamstring strain that kept him out for seven weeks.

Mexico President Sheinbaum Hopes Deported Boxer Chávez Jr. Will Serve Time in Mexico
Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday that Mexico hadn't previously arrested boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. on a 2023 arrest order because he had been mostly in the US since. Sheinbaum spoke a day after US authorities announced the boxer's arrest in California for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application. He was being processed for expedited removal, according to US authorities. 'The hope is that he will be deported and serve the sentence in Mexico,' Sheinbaum said during her daily news briefing Friday, referring to charges that Chávez faces for arms and drug trafficking. The 39-year-old boxer, according to his attorney, Michael Goldstein, was picked up Wednesday by a large number of federal agents while he was riding a scooter in front of a home where he resides in the upscale Los Angeles neighborhood of Studio City near Hollywood. The arrest came only days after the former middleweight champion lost a match against influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Anaheim, California. Chávez split his time between both countries. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers detained Chávez for overstaying a tourist visa that he entered the US with in August 2023 and expired in February 2024, the US Department of Homeland Security said. The agency also said Chávez submitted multiple fraudulent statements when he applied for permanent residency on April 2, 2024, based on his marriage to a US citizen, Frida Muñoz. She is the mother of a granddaughter of imprisoned Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán. US officials said that he's believed to have ties to the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, which is blamed for a significant portion of Mexico's drug violence.

Nationals place pitcher Trevor Williams on the injured list with an elbow sprain
The Washington Nationals placed starter Trevor Williams on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow sprain Friday, two days after the veteran right-hander gave up a season-high seven runs in an 11–2 loss to Detroit. Williams is 3–10 with a 6.21 ERA in 17 starts this season and is tied for second in the National League in losses. He agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal after going 6–1 with a 2.03 ERA last year despite being limited to 13 starts because of a strained muscle in his throwing arm. Washington recalled right-hander Ryan Loutos from Triple-A Rochester a day after demoting him. Loutos is 1–0 with a 13.50 ERA in eight games with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Nationals this season. The Nationals also activated catcher Keibert Ruiz from the injured list and optioned catcher Drew Millas to Rochester. Ruiz had been sidelined with a concussion after getting hit by a foul ball on June 23. Millas hit .143 with an RBI in three games.
