Rome was not built in a day. This age-old proverb contains a timeless truth that nations, like grand cities and civilisations, are not born overnight. They are crafted over generations through vision, struggle, learning, and collective will. Central to this process is education the engine that drives the rise, resilience, and renaissance of nations.
Nation-building is not simply about constructing infrastructure, drafting constitutions, or marking territorial boundaries. It is about cultivating a sense of identity, purpose, and shared values among people. It is the creation of strong institutions and the empowerment of citizens who think critically, act ethically, and contribute meaningfully. And education is the single most powerful tool in this noble endeavour.
Throughout history, societies that prioritised education laid the strongest foundations for their national development. Plato, in his famous work The Republic, envisioned an ideal state governed by philosopher-kings, leaders shaped by decades of moral and intellectual education.
Centuries later, thinkers like Paulo Freire and Amartya Sen reinforced this principle. Freire believed that education must awaken critical consciousness and liberate minds from passive acceptance.
Sen, a Nobel laureate, argued that education expands human freedom, not just economic utility. It gives individuals the capacity to live with dignity, to participate in shaping society, and to pursue their own aspirations.
Examples from the modern world are abundant. After the devastation of World War II, Germany and Japan rose from the ashes through widespread educational reforms. Germany introduced civic education programmes to reframe national identity and promote democratic values, while Japan focused on universal access, innovation, and moral education. Both nations used schools not just to teach but to heal. Similarly, South Korea, once a war-torn country, turned to education as the primary path to development.
It invested heavily in literacy, teacher training, and research, resulting in one of the world's most advanced economies within a generation.
The type of education provided is just as important as its accessibility. A curriculum designed solely to produce workers will not build a nation. Education must be holistic, one that nurtures not just knowledge, but empathy, courage, creativity, and character. It must teach students to ask questions, to embrace diversity, and to participate in civic life. It must encourage them not just to make a living, but to make a difference.
Who delivers education matters greatly. Teachers are the unsung architects of nation-building. Yet in many countries, they remain undervalued and underpaid. The quality of a nation's teachers directly impacts the quality of its citizens.
Investment in teacher training, academic freedom, and innovative pedagogy is a long-term investment in national resilience. As Nelson Mandela once said, 'Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.' Mandela understood that rebuilding South Africa after apartheid would require not just legal and political change, but a transformation of hearts and minds a task entrusted to education.
When nations face collapse from war, colonisation, or economic crisis, education becomes the path to rebirth. Rwanda's post-genocide recovery, for instance, included a strong emphasis on peace education and unity-building programmes in schools.
In post-independence India, leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Maulana Azad saw education as the central force in building a democratic, scientific, and secular nation. They established institutions of higher learning and encouraged scientific temper and critical thinking as tools for national integration.
In today's globalised world, the challenges facing nations, climate change, inequality, extremism require a new generation of citizens who think globally and act locally.
Civic education, ethics, environmental awareness, and leadership must be woven into the learning process. Countries like Finland and Singapore have embedded these values into their education systems with measurable success. Their students are not only knowledgeable but socially responsible and nationally committed.
Ultimately, nation-building begins within the hearts and minds of its people. The transformation of a country is not just through policies and projects but through people who embody the values of justice, compassion, and wisdom. Education is what awakens this potential. It builds character, confidence, and community. It transforms passive subjects into active citizens.
To build or rebuild a nation, one must begin with the minds of the young. The blackboard is stronger than the battlefield. The pen holds more promise than the sword. A society that sows education will harvest peace, prosperity and progress.

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping told Russia's top diplomat on Tuesday that their countries should "strengthen mutual support", state media said, as foreign ministers gathered in Beijing for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation talks. Beijing has long sought to present the SCO as a counterweight to Western-led power blocs such as Nato and has pushed for greater collaboration between its 10 members. Top diplomats from the grouping have arrived in Beijing for a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers, including Russia's Sergei Lavrov, India's Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Iran's Abbas Araghchi. Meeting Lavrov in the Chinese capital, Xi said the two countries should "strengthen mutual support on multilateral forums", according to state news agency Xinhua. Beijing and Moscow should work to "unite countries of the global South and promote the development of the international order in a more just and reasonable direction", Xi said. Russia's foreign ministry said in an earlier statement that "a number of issues of bilateral political contacts at the highest and high levels were discussed". They included preparations for President Vladimir Putin's visit to China to join a SCO summit and World War II anniversary celebrations. Russia's TASS news agency reported that Xi met Lavrov after the Chinese president held a "general meeting" with SCO foreign ministers. The meeting and pledges of support came just hours after US President Donald Trump warned Russia that he will impose "very severe" tariffs against Moscow's remaining trade partners if it doesn't resolve its war in Ukraine within 50 days. China, a diplomatic and economic ally of Moscow, in response said "coercion" by the United States would not resolve the conflict. "China firmly opposes all illegal unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction. There are no winners in a tariff war, and coercion and pressure will not solve problems," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said. Lavrov met on Sunday with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi to discuss Ukraine and relations with the United States. Beijing claims to be neutral in the war but it has never denounced Russia's more than three-year military campaign, nor called for it to withdraw its troops. Xi noted on Tuesday that "political mutual trust among member states has deepened", according to state broadcaster CCTV. The SCO "has successfully explored a path of regional cooperation that aligns with the trends of the times and meets the needs of all parties, setting a model for a new type of international relations," Xi said. — AFP

Mad Jack: The Story of the ‘Other' Churchill.

British statesman Winston Churchill was scorned by the Germans and adored by the British during World War II. A hero! But another of the same name, yet unrelated, was also brave, colourful and heroic! This is a 'Boys Own', story if ever there was one. 'Fighting Jack', or 'Mad Jack Churchill', was born John Malcolm Thorpe Fleming Churchill, of English/Irish descent, in Colombo, Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, in 1906, the son of a prominent civil servant and was educated at King William's College, on the Isle of Man. An impetuous youth, he swam and surfed, rode motorbikes, hunted, with guns, bows and arrows, was musically inclined playing several instruments and dabbled in amateur theatre, which remarkably, at 17, led to him being cast as an archer in the 1924 adventure movie, starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr, 'The Thief of Baghdad'. Later, Churchill attended Sandhurst Military College, graduating in 1926. His first wartime experience came soon after, in Burma, now Myanmar, where, as a young officer in the 2nd Battalion of the Manchester Regiment, Churchill's bravery was mentioned in military dispatches. Even so, he left the army to try a career in journalism as a newspaper editor in exotic Nairobi, Kenya. He enjoyed the lifestyle but was always looking for 'different' things to do. He worked for a time as a male model, which was unheard of at the time and playing the bagpipes, claimed second place in the 'Aldershot Tattoo', of 1938, which was quite an achievement. He also represented Great Britain with a meritorious 26th placing, in the World Archery Championships of 1939. The outbreak of war later that year saw Churchill eagerly return to the military and the legend of 'Fighting Jack Churchill' gained prominence as the beleaguered British Expeditionary Force retreated in disarray towards Dunkirk. War correspondents wrote of Churchill, 'sword in hand, charging elite German troops, terrified of having their limbs cleaved, who turned and ran when he shot one of them through the heart with his bow and arrow'. At L'Epinette, when the retreating British forces were surrounded. Historian Christian Ord wrote of Churchill being inspirational to an army of tired, disheartened soldiers, with their backs to the sea at Dunkirk, uncertain of rescue. Yet, as they sank exhausted onto the sands as night fell, amidst the ignominy of retreat, a sword wielding bowman and piper became legend and breathed new life into an army with its tail between its legs. His heroism recognised with the award of the Military Medal, Churchill then joined the elite Commandos in 1941 and at Vagsoy, in Norway in 1941, when their landing craft hit the beach, Churchill marched ashore at the head of his company, playing the bagpipes. Inspiring his men and terrifying the Germans. The fight lasted less than 10 minutes, with most of the enemy killed and no British casualties. The few Germans left alive reported a 'mad swordsman' they couldn't kill and the legend of 'Mad Jack', spread further. Churchill led a similar seaborne landing at Catania in Sicily, marching up the beachhead at the head of his men playing his bagpipes, bullets flying all around, then, handing his 'pipes' to one of his men, he drew his sword and charged like a man possessed, at the enemy observation post, which they captured and took more than forty prisoners. Churchill was awarded a Distinguished Service Order for bravery and the legend grew even more. As the war neared its end, Churchill was captured in Yugoslavia, then, flown to Berlin (the Germans thought he was related to Churchill), he tunnelled his way free but was soon recaptured and moved to a POW camp in Austria, from which incredibly, he escaped and made his way back to Italy, a trek of more than a thousand miles. 'Mad Jack', or 'Fighting Jack', Churchill was undoubtedly bold and brave, yet historians agree, while maybe reckless, he was never careless, with every action, every command, every word, considered and thoughtful. How then, has history forgotten such a genuine hero. His life was, a story, of which it's been said, was 'the best movie never made'.

The Supreme Court ruling barring judges from swiftly blocking government actions, even when they may be illegal, is yet another way that checks on executive authority have eroded as President Trump pushes to amass more power. The decision will allow Trump's executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship to take effect in some parts of the country — even though every court that has looked at the directive has ruled it unconstitutional. That means some infants born to undocumented immigrants or foreign visitors without green cards can be denied citizenship-affirming documentation like Social Security numbers. But the diminishing of judicial authority as a potential counterweight to exercises of presidential power carries implications far beyond the issue of citizenship. The Supreme Court is effectively tying the hands of lower-court judges at a time when they are trying to respond to a steady geyser of aggressive executive branch orders and policies. Presidential power historically goes through ebbs and flows, with fundamental implications for the functioning of the system of checks and balances that defines American-style democracy. But it has generally been on an upward path since the middle of the 20th century. The growth of the administrative state inside the executive branch and the large standing armies left in place as World War II segued into the Cold War, inaugurated what the historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr coined the 'imperial presidency'. Presidential power waned in the 1970s, in the period encompassing the Watergate scandal and the end of the Vietnam War. Courts proved willing to rule against the presidency, as when the Supreme Court forced President Richard M Nixon to turn over his Oval Office tapes. Members of both parties worked together to enact laws imposing new or restored limits on the exercise of executive power. But the present era is very different. Presidential power began to grow again in the Reagan era and after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. And now Trump, rejecting norms of self-restraint, has pushed to eliminate checks on his authority and stamp out pockets of independence within the government while only rarely encountering resistance from a Supreme Court he reshaped and a Congress controlled by a party in his thrall. The decision by the Supreme Court's conservative majority comes as other constraints on Trump's power have also eroded. The administration has steamrolled internal executive branch checks, including firing inspectors-general and sidelining the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel, which traditionally set guardrails for proposed policies and executive orders. And Congress, under the control of Trump's fellow Republicans, has done little to defend its constitutional role against his encroachments. This includes unilaterally dismantling agencies Congress had said shall exist as a matter of law, firing civil servants in defiance of statutory limits and refusing to spend funds that lawmakers had authorised and appropriated. Last week, when Trump unilaterally bombed Iranian nuclear sites without getting prior authorisation from Congress or making any claim of an imminent threat, one Republican, Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, stepped forward to call the move unconstitutional since Congress has the power to declare war. Trump reacted ferociously, declaring that he would back a primary challenger to end Massie's political career, a clear warning shot to any other Republican considering objecting to his actions. Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska, recently told her constituents that 'we are all afraid' of Trump. But while the immediate beneficiary of the Supreme Court's ruling is Trump, the decision also promises to free his successors from what has been a growing trend of district court intervention into presidential policymaking. In the citizenship case, the justices stripped district court judges of the authority to issue so-called universal injunctions, a tool that lower courts have used to block government actions they deem most likely illegal from taking effect nationwide as legal challenges to them play out. The frequency of such orders has sharply increased in recent years, bedeviling presidents of both parties. Going forward, the justices said, lower courts may only grant injunctive relief to the specific plaintiffs who have filed lawsuits. That means the Trump administration may start enforcing Trump's birthright citizenship order in the 28 states that have not challenged it, unless individual parents have the wherewithal and gumption to bring their own lawsuits. The full scope of the ruling remains to be seen given that it will not take effect for 30 days. It is possible that plaintiffs and lower-court judges will expand the use of class-action lawsuits as a different path to orders with a nationwide effect. Such an option, Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote in the majority opinion, would be proper so long as they obey procedural limits for class-action cases. In a rare move that signalled unusually intense opposition, Justice Sonia Sotomayor read aloud a summary of her dissenting opinion from the bench on Friday. Calling the ruling a grave attack on the American system of law, she said it endangered constitutional rights for everyone who is not a party to lawsuits defending them. 'Today, the threat is to birthright citizenship,' she wrote. 'Tomorrow, a different administration may try to seize firearms from law-abiding citizens or prevent people of certain faiths from gathering to worship. The majority holds that, absent cumbersome class-action litigation, courts cannot completely enjoin even such plainly unlawful policies unless doing so is necessary to afford the formal parties complete relief.'
