‘Lid on or off?': Viral meat pie debate divides Aussies
From the ongoing argument about how thickly to spread Vegemite on toast, to which snag deserves to be on the sambo at the Bunnings sausage sizzle, we love defending our food rituals.
Now, the humble meat pie – arguably the pinnacle of Australian cuisine – is once again at the centre of heated online discussion.
While you might think it's a straightforward task, it turns out there are many popular methods for enjoying this iconic servo staple.
It all started when an Aussie took to Reddit, showing four distinct pie-eating techniques, rating them out of 10.
The first method involved removing the lid and eating the filling with a spoon.
This was slammed as a '0/10' and 'unAustralian'.
According to the original poster, 'a meat pie should not be on a plate'.
The second method – and probably the most widely accepted – involves taking a bite, squirting sauce directly onto the exposed filling, and repeating until the pie is finished.
This scored a 9/10 for delivering an 'equal meat to sauce ratio' in every bite.
The classic 'on the go' approach – sauce on top, pie in hand – received a 7/10 with the caveat: 'provided you keep adding sauce as you go along'.
The final method, where the eater uses the pastry lid as a makeshift spoon to scoop out the filling, was given a savage score of -12.
The verdict was that it is 'so messy, so soggy and basically the worst'.
Naturally, comments were full of people equally passionate about the right way to eat a pie.
The four main points of contention were:
– The order of eating the pastry and filling
– The role of sauce (on top, mixed in, or not at all)
– The method of consumption (cutlery versus hands-on)
– Whether to add extra flavour or not
Some suggested a hybrid approach. 'What about taking the lid off, adding sauce, then putting the lid back on?' proposed one.
'I take the lid off, add shredded cheese, then put the lid back on if it's a plain meat pie,' said another.
Context also plays a part, with many admitting their method depends on the situation.
'If I'm at home, I'll whip out my finest silverware, but if I'm on the go, number two all the way,' wrote one.
Another added: 'If it's a good meat pie, it's on a plate and I'm using utensils because I'm not an animal,' another said, 'but if it's a footy pie or a bakery pie ready to go, just blow on it'.
Burnt tongues were a common concern, with one swearing by the lid-off method to avoid scorched fillings.
'Taking the lid off means I don't get burning meat all over me and burn the crap out of my mouth,' said a user.
There were also many sauce sceptics.
One boldly claimed, 'A good pie needs no sauce'.
'The pie should speak for itself,' another agreed.
Then, the creative approaches began rolling in.
'I cut it straight down the guts 'cos it's piping hot and I can blow on the meat before devouring each half with my head tilted to the side a little,' shared one.
'I usually have two pies. I eat the lids, then pour the extra meat into one pie,' shared another pie fanatic.
'Real pie eaters take the lid off, flip it so it's flakes crust down to avoid losing that stuff and then smash that bad boy like an apple,' argued another.
'I crack open the top, squirt in the sauces (tomato and BBQ in equal measure), mix it all together with the mince, replace the top, and then eat it,' said someone else.
And of course, the traditionalists chimed in, 'Order your pie, chuck on your sauce, and take a bite – easy as that,' said someone.
Like any food debate close to our hearts, it's clear there's no single 'correct' way to eat a meat pie – just a lot of fiercely held opinions.

NT elders fear Aboriginal languages are being lost, as communities band together to help save them
Three years ago, the United Nations issued a dire warning: Australia was one of dozens of countries facing a mass extinction event. But it wasn't flora or fauna that was at risk of being lost — it was languages. A previous UN forum had found 40 per cent of the estimated 6,700 languages around the world were in danger of disappearing — most of them Indigenous. In the three years since, dozens of Australian Indigenous communities have fought back against that decline, working with archives and the knowledge of elders to revitalise their native languages. In northern Australia, the effort last month brought together more than 50 Indigenous leaders from over 30 languages groups for a forum on protecting languages. The leaders developed a list of recommendations across a broad range of areas, including education and employment, to be finalised and presented to stakeholders in late August. For Rarrtjiwuy Herdman — one of the organisers of the Top End Langauges Forum — language preservation has been a lifelong passion. She has been working to keep her native language of Dhaŋu alive, a Yolŋu language from north-east Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. Ms Herdman said time was running out for some languages, with the passing of more Aboriginal clan elders in recent years. "I've sadly only recently lost another family member, a speaker of Dhaŋu, a mentor and a father to me," she said. The Yolŋu woman said in order to keep clan languages alive, they needed to be spoken at work, in the community and in schools. "There's an assumption that all of our languages are equally being support[ed] across the Top End area," Ms Herdman said. "Some of our languages are being supported in schools [and] in community … but a few of our languages are actually endangered." While Ms Herdman is worried about languages becoming "extinct", she is also afraid the younger generation is becoming lost without their language. "The sense of responsibility to continue our languages is something that our elders and leaders are worried about, and particularly for our clan languages," she said. In 2022, the United Nations launched the International Decade of Languages global action plan, in response to the thousands of international Indigenous languages it said were disappearing at "alarming rates". At the time, a research paper led by the Australian National University found Australia had one of the worst records in the world for language loss. According to a 2019 survey by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), out of 250 Indigenous Australian languages that were active prior to colonisation, only 12 were still being actively acquired by children. The report also showed that more than half of Indigenous Australian languages still in use were only being spoken by elders. Three years on from the launch of the global action plan, AIATSIS Centre for Australian Languages director Lauren Reed said Australia was in a better position. She said the Australian government had since "seen the real need to turn the tide on language loss" and set up a national policy partnership to address the issue. "There are signs of hope that have been growing since the beginning of [2022]," she said. Ms Reed said many Indigenous language speakers needed to feel their language was "relevant" to the Western world, including seeing it used in mainstream and social media. She said she liked to think of out-of-use languages as "sleeping" rather than "extinct". Renfred Manmurulu, a speaker at the forum, presented about his South Goulburn Island language, Mawng. Mr Manmurulu said in many traditional practices, such as Mawng songlines, culture was inseparable from language. "It's a window of who you are and where you're from," he said. Mr Manmurulu said he had noticed many in the younger generations choosing to speak the "dominant" Indigenous language dialect of their region over other, "endangered" dialects spoken in smaller communities. "If you don't use the language — if you, say, use the universal language English more often than your own language — well then, that's the ending of the language," he said. He said he hoped young people could come up with new ways of using technology to make their dialects more widespread.

Demolition of Broken Hill's Willyama High School begins after mould outbreak
Eighteen months after a Broken Hill high school was forced to close indefinitely due to a major mould infestation, demolition work has begun. More than 600 Willyama High School students had to be relocated to alternate schools in January last year after the start of term one. The public high school in Far West New South Wales was earmarked for demolition last March after an independent hygienist report found the mould infestation was so extreme the building would have to be stripped down to its bricks to be safe again. The rebuild, which local MP Roy Butler believes will cost between $90–100 million, is expected to start early next year, with students returning from 2027. In the past, locals living near the site voiced concerns about potentially coming into contact with hazardous material, including mould or asbestos, during the demolition. In a statement, a NSW Department of Education spokesperson said surrounding residents should not worry. "Before heavy demolition began in the area, all associated hazardous materials were safely removed, and the area inspected to confirm remediation was safely completed," they said. "The safety and wellbeing of our students, workers and the community is our highest priority, and we will keep the community updated as work progresses." The spokesperson said the process had been carefully staged to "prioritise safety and minimise disruption to the local community". "All demolition activities are being undertaken in alignment with the Remediation Action Plan developed by an independent hygienist for the site," they said. The NSW government announced last month it had allocated more than $50 million in the state budget to start the Willyama High School rebuild.
