Sustainability and climate reporting continue to face widespread resistance among businesses, many of which do not view these issues as material or consistent with business objectives.
But global markets' gradual move towards mandatory reporting on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues – especially climate-related disclosures – goes beyond providing insights on the sustainability of individual companies. When a critical mass of businesses provides ESG information, that data can be used to discern broader trends, which in turn can be used to make money.
MSCI Research's latest report on climate action progress among companies on the MSCI AC Asia Pacific Investable Market Index shows one way in which that analysis can be done.

MSCI Research assessed the transition plans disclosed by companies on the index and identified a number of clean-tech sectors that could experience increased demand because of companies' decarbonisation commitments. A transition plan lays out a company's strategic decarbonisation goals, technology roadmaps and capital allocation to achieve short, medium and long-term targets.
In the energy sector, MSCI Research found that companies with transition plans were planning to invest more in hydrogen, renewables, electric vehicles and carbon capture and storage (CCS). All 16 energy companies that provided transition plans, in addition to 200 companies not in the energy sector, held hydrogen-related patents as at October 2024.
About 4 per cent, or 150 companies, of the index companies provide clean transportation solutions, MSCI Research said. Companies that generated more than 80 per cent of revenue from electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles had annual total revenue growth rates of over 25 per cent, surpassing their peers.
In the utilities sector, MSCI Research identified clean energy and hydrogen-fired generation as strategic priorities for companies in the region, with more than 80 per cent of transition roadmaps indicating potential use of clean fuels. More than 70 per cent of the transition plans also referred to potential use of CCS.
A key area of research and development investment is in perovskite-on-silicon tandem solar cells, which have higher theoretical efficiency limits than the traditional silicon cells.
Almost all transition plans from the materials sector involved developing renewable-energy and low-carbon products. Steel, cement and hydrogen are examples of materials that require large amounts of power and have therefore been difficult to transition away from fossil fuels. Despite the energy-intensive nature of many of these products, MSCI Research found that less than half of companies in the sector were looking at adopting CCS.
The MSCI Research analysis is possible because the number of companies that are reporting on their transition plans has been increasing, from 12 per cent of all the stocks on the index in 2022 to 22 per cent in 2024. The numbers are expected to improve in the coming years as jurisdictions begin to adopt and implement global accounting standards that include disclosing transition plans.
The adoption of the accounting standards will also uplift the quality of the data, by increasing the sample size and improving comparability.
Harnessing the power of the financial markets is often touted as a critical requirement for fighting climate change at scale.
For that to happen, it's important that investors understand climate action not simply as a form of risk management, but as a source of profitable opportunities as well. More and better sustainability disclosures can enable analysis for this side of the equation.
As investors become more sophisticated about climate-related disclosures, companies will also find it easier to get noticed for credible climate strategies and progress on those strategies. While sustainability reporting may require resources, companies that are transparent and committed could find the cost well worth the rewards.

When is uranium exposure a good thing?

Hou sees four drivers for higher demand in the nuclear energy value chain.
The first is a security need to diversify away from fossil fuels, sparked by wars in Europe and the Middle East.
The second is the energy transition commitments that countries and big companies have set for themselves. In quite a number of these cases, nuclear energy has emerged as a potentially feasible and possibly essential low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels, especially when renewable options are inadequate or still immature. For instance, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam are at various stages of exploring nuclear energy. Tech giants such as Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft have also announced their intentions to acquire nuclear energy.
Third, digitalisation and artificial intelligence are gobbling up a huge and increasing amount of electricity.
Finally, the development of small modular reactors has significantly lowered the cost and land resources required for nuclear energy.
Hou outlined four ways to invest in the nuclear sector:
Physical uranium
Uranium miners
Reactor developers
Utilities
As Hou says, momentum for nuclear energy is definitely growing. However, most of the nuclear players sit outside of Asia. Hong Kong-listed CGN Mining, which extracts uranium to support China's nuclear industry, is one of the rare investable names in this region. It's definitely a space worth watching.

[SINGAPORE] South-east Asian markets that have a renewable energy source might have a leg up in attracting American tech giant IBM to set up data centres. While having renewable energy is not the only determining factor, it is an important criteria that the technology company considers when assessing where to locate its data centres, said its chief sustainability officer Christina Shim in an interview with The Business Times. When asked whether South-east Asian markets would be more attractive as a location for IBM to set up its data centres if it were to green its energy mix, Shim said: 'Could it help? Absolutely. I think we're all aligned, and making sure that this is an important factor as part of the decision. But it would have to be balanced out with all the other factors.' Shim noted that renewable energy is more accessible in some regions than in others. This is partly why the technology company had set a target of sourcing 90 per cent of the electricity it consumes worldwide from renewable sources by 2030, though it would like to push past 90 per cent if possible. It has an interim goal of 75 per cent by this year, which Shim said it is 'on track, if not a little early' in meeting. IBM has also set a target of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, with an interim goal of reducing its emissions by 65 per cent by this year against its 2010 levels. Sign Up Sign Up If the company does decide to set up a data centre in a location where there are no renewable energy sources, then it would have to balance that out with the rest of its portfolio of data centres, Shim added. The company currently operates more than 60 data centres across the globe, out of which about 10 are in Asia-Pacific. 'If the region here is able to diversify its energy mix more by that point, and we are trying to keep in touch with our global real estate, (as well as) what's happening with government and regulatory affairs regionally... we are keeping on top of any sort of planned investment in those areas to see how we can better shift and evolve with what's happening on the ground,' Shim added. Besides whether a location has renewable energy source, Shim said, data centre management efficiency is also important. 'Can you also improve the optimisation of the data centre itself, and using the right technology internally to be able to do that? That's also pretty powerful,' she added. Shim also said that IBM will continue to embed sustainability into its business, even though climate change has been deprioritised by the current United States administration under President Donald Trump. Integrating sustainability is not just about being a good corporate citizen, but is 'fundamentally good economics for the business and its foundation for growth', Shim added. 'It shows increased innovation. It's additional revenue generation. It's good for talent attraction... Regardless of all the changes, we are focused on maximising long-term value for our clients, for our partners, for us.' For example, with more businesses looking at incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into their business operations, there is more work looking at how AI models can be trained more efficiently, so that it is more cost-efficient for companies to use such technologies. Shim sees opportunities for AI and sustainability in the area of improving ESG data in Asia. Besides helping to collate and make sense of hundreds of data points that large companies would have, it could also help support language challenges in the region. Besides sustainability reporting, AI can also be used to identify per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances – which are chemicals that are extremely persistent in the environment and human bodies – in a company's supply chain. 'How do you identify where they are in your supply chain, in your manufacturing, in your products, and then how do you make sure that you have the right sustainable replacements to make it safer for your consumers, for your customers – not just from a regulatory perspective, which is increasingly going to be enforced, but also from a consumer safety perspective,' she said. 'That is something that will also be very relevant in this region just because of how much manufacturing happens here that goes globally.'

Green shipping, digital tools are key themes for Motion Ventures' new US$100 million fund

[SINGAPORE] From decarbonising ships to making seafarers more efficient – Motion Ventures wants to bet on technologies that 'will define the next generation' of maritime innovation, said its founder and general partner Shaun Hon. To power its support of these technologies, the firm unveiled a fund in March that aims to raise US$100 million. It has attracted more than half that target so far. This follows the success of its inaugural S$30 million fund launched four years ago. Hon said the maritime industry has been slow to adopt new technologies, but that innovation is gaining steam. The International Maritime Organization's target for global shipping to hit net-zero emissions by or around 2050 has spurred investments into electric vessels, alternative fuel and digital tools that improve efficiency on board ships. The ongoing tech funding winter, which began when venture capitalists slashed investments with the rise of interest rates from 2022, has not hit maritime startups as hard as it has with consumer startups. Hon said: 'If you think about maritime venture investments, they've only gone up, though it wasn't like there were a lot of investors before.' He added that startup valuations in this space are driven by rational business fundamentals. Sign Up Sign Up Motion Ventures has thus far backed four startups with its second fund. One of them is Fernride, from Germany, which provides autonomous and electric trucking solutions for the maritime industry. The second is OceanScore, also based in Germany, which offers solutions for compliance with the European Union's Emissions Trading System and fuel regulations. The remaining two startups are maritime insurance platform Ceto, and Moddule, which is building a 'command centre' solution for logistics. Hon identified maritime decarbonisation as a big investment theme, fuelled by climate regulations. Solutions that help vessels cut down on fuel consumption carry the dual benefits of slashing both emissions and costs. This means 'there's no trade-off' for shipping companies to adopt such solutions, he noted. Digitalisation of the shipping industry is another key focus. Hon noted that more vessels now have Internet access, thanks to satellite solutions such as Starlink. With vessels becoming like floating offices, shipowners and ship managers can 'unlock a lot of business value' by shifting away from pen-and-paper processes. Solid fundamentals Hon, previously an investment principal at Singapore venture capital firm (VC) Trive, founded Motion Ventures in 2021. That year, many VCs were still focused on hot segments such as fintech and consumer apps. But Hon, a mechanical engineer by training, grew interested in maritime tech after conversations with several industry players. He learned that the sector had promising startups that were 'under-funded, but had very solid business fundamentals'. 'These businesses were break-even by default, or 'alive', in startup terms. But no one was investing in these,' he said. With its inaugural fund, Motion Ventures backed 27 maritime startups across the world – such as Singapore electric vessel builder Pyxis, Indian container reuse platform MatchLog, and Fishtail, a US startup providing financing for freight forwarders. The geographic diversity is in line with how the shipping industry itself is 'extremely global', said Hon, adding that his team looks for the 'best technology that can move the industry forward'. He sees Europe being a hub for emissions-reduction solutions, while the US and India have produced freight and trucking innovations, due to their need to move goods around huge landmasses. A tailwind for maritime startups is the healthy level of acquisition activity happening in the maritime space, which means investors can realise their investments beyond the public listing route. For instance, DeepSea Technologies – a maritime AI startup that Motion Ventures backed through its first fund – was acquired by Japanese engineering company Nabtesco Group in 2023. Government support is a further boost for the maritime tech ecosystem. Singapore has, for example, formed 'green and digital shipping corridors' with international partners to promote the use of new technologies, Hon noted. Bridging startups and corporate players With its broad portfolio, Motion Ventures has attracted maritime corporations to invest in its funds for exposure to startups. Its first fund has 17 maritime companies as investors. They include maritime classification society Lloyd's Register, ship-management company Wilhelmsen, and the corporate venture arms of shipping companies MOL and IMC Industrial Group. Hon said: 'Once we had a few investors come on board, over time, the network effect just started playing out.' The majority of the investors in the first fund also stepped up to back the second one. Motion Ventures has not disclosed specifics. The VC hopes to not just be a financial investor, but also a 'bridge' between its portfolio companies and its base of corporate investors, said Hon. He estimates that about two-thirds of its portfolio companies have developed working relationships with the VC's investors. For instance, France-based Everimpact, which Motion Ventures backed with its first fund, collaborated with Wilhelmson and MOL to test carbon dioxide sensors on board MOL vessels. 'This is a collaboration that would have been extremely difficult to do if we were all not at the same table,' said Hon. Back in 2021, maritime tech was a blue-ocean opportunity, but the deal space is now getting more crowded. Hon sees more generalist VCs showing interest in investing in this sector. 'Non-maritime VCs could invest, literally, in any space in the world, but they're starting to pay attention to maritime,' he said. 'I think those are very positive and encouraging proof points that what we're doing is in the right direction.'

Singapore forms government coalition with UK, Kenya to grow carbon markets

[SINGAPORE] Singapore, the United Kingdom and Kenya have formed a government-led coalition aimed at growing carbon markets. One of the first tasks the coalition has set out to accomplish is to issue a set of shared principles on how corporates can voluntarily use carbon credits, so that there is consistency across jurisdictions, said a joint press statement on Tuesday (Jun 24). They hope to finalise these guidelines by the time the next United Nations' annual climate change conference – COP30 – is held in Belem, Brazil, in November this year. This is in response to calls from businesses for greater clarity from governments on the use of carbon credits as part of corporate decarbonisation plans. 'The shared principles will give businesses the confidence and incentives they need to invest in a proven but underused climate financing tool and continue to strengthen and scale carbon markets. The coalition will work closely with businesses, so that policies and incentives better respond to business needs,' read the statement. The coalition – which was formed at the sidelines of the London Climate Action Week – will be co-chaired by Singapore's Ambassador for Climate Action Ravi Menon, Kenya's Special Climate Envoy Ali Mohamed, as well as UK's Special Representative for Climate Rachel Kyte. Sign Up Sign Up The coalition has France and Panama as its first members, and is looking to expand its membership over the coming months to include countries that are sources of demand for carbon credits, as well as countries which are sources of supply of credits. Speaking at the coalition's launch in London, Menon said that the team has been reaching out to several countries in the last few weeks and that they expect to have a 'good-sized coalition' by COP30. Peru has also endorsed the coalition's mission by recognising the critical role of carbon markets and corporate use of carbon credits in delivering climate-positive growth globally. The coalition said that the set of shared principles will better reflect the true value of carbon emissions being reduced or removed, thereby helping to grow demand for high-integrity carbon credits, and increase the flow of climate finance to emerging markets and developing economies. 'This will boost investment in climate-positive businesses, sustainable development and projects such as sustainable agriculture, clean energy, as well as nature conservation and restoration,' noted the statement. Menon added that that the shared principles are to ensure consistency but not uniformity, as individual countries may still choose to issue more detailed guidance that suits their national circumstances even as it ensures there is alignment to international standards. On Jun 20, the city-state's National Climate Change Secretariat, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Enterprise Singapore jointly issued a draft guidance on how companies can voluntarily use carbon credits as part of a credible decarbonisation plan, and has invited the public to provide feedback. Menon also said that the coalition will collaborate with industry, standard setters, and international organisations to ensure that its work is relevant and credible. The International Chamber of Commerce and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development will be partners to the coalition. The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market – an independent governance body that sets standards on the supply of credits – is also working with the team to support alignment between the demand and supply sides of the market.
