On the other hand, the coffee consuming countries were increasingly becoming more demanding, they wanted transparency, traceability and sustainability, elements also aimed at ensuring right economic value for the commodity, he said.
Commenting on growing coffee consumption in India, Mr. Dash said although India has been a tea drinking nation, now 20% to 25% of the population were drinking coffee. ''So, the headroom is huge for India and going forward coffee has a huge potential both near term and long term,'' he added.
According to him, the cafe retailing market has been quite bullish in India and its growth outlook is very positive. An evolving coffee culture, with the coexistence of organised cafe chains, standalone entrepreneurial coffee ventures and tiny coffee outlets in villages, together were creating a spiralling impact and a coffee culture was getting created all across the country, he observed.
'We are clearly seeing a spiralling impact and a fast-growing coffee culture across the country, including in small towns. We, Starbucks, are looking for category expansion, a huge growth of the cafe market,'' Mr. Dash further said, indicating that taking market share was't the chain's primary focus.
Buoyed by a rapidly growing cafe culture in metros and small towns across the country in the last two to three years, Starbusks has accelerated its store openings in India ``We see a lot of youngests taking to coffee, although India is a tea country. It is not just a metro feature, but the coffee culture has been spreading across the country. We have 487 cafes in 80 cities. We are very bullish on the market and we will continue to expand wherever we think the need exists,'' Mr. Dash further said.
Tat Starbucks had earlier indicated that it has a target of opening 1,000 Starbucks outlets in India by FY28.

Amazon cloud computing results fail to impress, shares dive
By Deborah Mary Sophia and Greg Bensinger Amazon .com on Thursday forecast third-quarter sales above market estimates, but failed to live up to lofty expectations for its Amazon Web Services cloud computing unit after rivals handily beat Wall Street forecasts. Shares plunged by more than 7% after-hours. Before releasing the results, Amazon had finished regular trading up 1.7% to $234.11. Both Google-parent Alphabet and Microsoft posted big cloud computing revenue gains this month. AWS profit margins also contracted. Amazon said they were 32.9% in the second quarter, down from 39.5% in this year's first quarter and 35.5% a year ago. The second-quarter margin results were at their lowest level since the final quarter of 2023. "AWS is their growth engine and to see that drop in margin is dropping the stock," said Ken Mahoney, CEO of Mahoney Asset Management. "The market was looking for further fireworks to take this up back to new highs and beyond." AWS reported a 17.5% increase in revenue to $30.9 billion, edging past expectations of $30.77 billion. By comparison, sales for Microsoft's Azure rose 39% and Google Cloud gained 32%. Amazon expects total net sales to be between $174.0 billion and $179.5 billion in the third quarter, compared with analysts' average estimate of $173.08 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. The range for operating income in the current quarter was also light. Amazon forecast between $15.5 billion and $20.5 billion, compared with expectations of $19.45 billion. Both Microsoft and Alphabet cited massive demand for their cloud computing services to boost their already huge capital spending, but also noted they still faced capacity constraints that limited their ability to meet demand. AWS represents a small part of Amazon's total revenue, but it is a key driver of profits, typically accounting for about 60% of Amazon's overall operating income. While Amazon has poured billions of dollars into AI infrastructure, analysts have said the lack of a strong AI model from AWS is causing concerns that the company could be trailing rivals in AI development. The AWS results are "alarming," said Dave Wagner, portfolio manager for Aptus Capital Advisers, which holds Amazon shares. "Amazon is an operating leverage story and they had to be able to grow, at least relative to costs. And they haven't done it. The largest tech companies have been boosting capital expenditures to add more data center capacity, particularly for artificial intelligence software deployment and development. Amazon said it expected roughly second-half spending roughly the same as its second quarter total of $31.4 billion, suggesting it would spend around $118 billion for the full year. Analysts had projected about $100 billion. On Wednesday, Microsoft said it would spend a record $30 billion in the current quarter. Google-parent Alphabet raised its spending forecast by $10 billion to $85 billion for the year. Seattle-based Amazon posted online store sales of $61.5 billion, an 11% gain. Advertising sales, a fast-growing segment for Amazon, were up 23% to $15.7 billion. Investors have been watching Amazon's e-commerce unit for any signs that tariff-related uncertainty has dashed consumer confidence. U.S. data showed consumer spending rose moderately in June. CEO Andy Jassy, in a call with analysts, addressed concerns about the impacts of tariffs on Amazon's core retail business. "Through the first half of the year, we haven't yet seen diminishing demand nor prices meaningfully appreciating," he said on a call with analysts. "We also have such diversity of sellers in our marketplace, over 2 million sellers in total, with differing strategies of whether to pass on higher costs to consumers." He added: "We just don't know what's going to happen moving forward. It's hard to know where the tariffs are going to settle, particularly in China." President Donald Trump's tariffs have major retailers and consumer goods companies scrambling to protect margins while trying not to hurt consumer demand. Trump has said the levies will bring manufacturing power and jobs back to the U.S. Analysts had said Amazon's focus on low prices, quick delivery and its many product categories helped cement its position as the No. 1 e-commerce retailer for U.S. consumers, giving it an edge over rivals. Amazon has said it was pushing suppliers to pull forward inventories to ensure supply and keep prices as low as possible. Still, prices for goods made in China and sold on have been rising faster than overall inflation, Reuters reported last month. Amazon has been trimming jobs, including at its AWS, books, devices and podcasting units. Headcount fell by 14,000 workers from this year's first quarter, bringing the total to 1.46 million, the first decline since the beginning of 2024.

Microsoft races past $4 trillion valuation after solid results
By Pranav Kashyap Microsoft soared past $4 trillion in market valuation on Thursday, becoming the second publicly traded company after Nvidia to surpass the milestone following a blockbuster earnings report. The technology behemoth forecast a record $30 billion in capital spending for the first quarter of the current fiscal year to meet soaring AI demand and reported booming sales in its Azure cloud computing business on Wednesday. Shares of Microsoft were up 6.6% at $546.33 in morning trading. "It is in the process of becoming more of a cloud infrastructure business and a leader in enterprise AI , doing so very profitably and cash generatively despite the heavy AI capital expenditures," said Gerrit Smit, lead portfolio manager, Stonehage Fleming Global Best Ideas Equity Fund. Redmond, Washington-headquartered Microsoft first cracked the $1-trillion mark in April 2019. Its move to $3 trillion was more measured than technology giants Nvidia and Apple, with AI-bellwether Nvidia tripling its value in just about a year and clinching the $4-trillion milestone before any other company on July 9. Apple was last valued at $3.11 trillion. Lately, breakthroughs in trade talks between the United States and its trading partners ahead of President Donald Trump's August 1 tariff deadline have buoyed stocks, propelling the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq to record highs. Microsoft's multibillion-dollar bet on OpenAI is proving to be a game changer, powering its Office Suite and Azure offerings with cutting-edge AI and fueling the stock to more than double its value since ChatGPT 's late-2022 debut. London, Aug 1 (PTI) Three education technology tools making an impact with innovative learning solutions in India are among the top 10 finalists of an inaugural Global EdTech Prize. Pragati from Room to Read India Trust, Gurukul from Avanti Fellows and LEAD Learning System from LEAD Group were named Top 10 finalists this week. The prize is created to spotlight trailblazing solutions that are driving change and grappling with the most crucial challenges in classrooms around the world. The prize, founded by UK-headquartered T4 Education with Owl Ventures and Digital Promise, will be awarded in three categories of Non-Profits, Start-Ups and Majors, with winners announced at the World Schools Summit in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in November. 'In using technology to solve the greatest challenges in education, you are making a difference to so many lives. While Pragati and Gurukul are in the running in the Non-Profits category, LEAD has been chosen in the Majors category for revolutionising school education in India by transforming budget private schools into centres of academic excellence. LEAD Learning System has been recognised for its ability to transform student learning by codifying the best practices of curriculum design, lesson planning, teaching, training, monitoring and remediation and making it available in an easy-to-use form by teachers, students, school leaders and parents. All top 10 finalists from around the world will be invited to the World Schools Summit in Abu Dhabi to showcase their work before an 'Expert Panel" comprising leading figures in the technology and education sectors, including global investors and policymakers. The Expert Panel will then narrow down the final three per category who will present their products and tools before educators to vote by secret ballot to announce the winner in each category live on stage on November 16.
