‘The paintings come alive': How Co Down artist's unconventional painting method is mesmerising TikTok

Kathryn Callaghan created a portrait in honour of the Holywood star completing golf's grand slam earlier this year with victory at the Masters — and her unique technique is earning her thousands of views on TikTok.
Instead of using a paintbrush or a palette knife, Kathryn pours an inky mixture directly onto the canvas from a height, something she picked up almost by accident in college and has since made her own.
While retaining poise and control as the ink falls into place, there is inevitably indiscriminate splatter as the liquid meets the canvas.
Kathryn says: 'It might seem strange, but this technique allows me to work fast and gesturally, freeing me from the constraints of a sub-sketch. Gravity has as much to do with the process as anything.
'There is energy harnessed as the ink falls from bottle to the surface and just enough of an element of losing control to allow the ink to make its own unplanned marks.
'The paintings come alive from this raw beauty and the real energy that is injected into each piece.'
In 2009, Kathryn returned to education at Belfast Metropolitan College to study fine art, and it was here that she embraced the pouring technique.
She adds: 'Someone had donated some art supplies to the college, and I was rummaging through the box to see what was in there.
'I decided to pour some ink onto wax paper to try to create a painting of a damselfly.
'When I took the painting to my tutor, she immediately recognised it as a damselfly and, since then, after some experimenting to ensure the right consistency, I have been using this technique.'

Kathryn's love of golf courses was the catalyst for one of her recent roles as a judge for Tourism Northern Ireland's art competition for primary and secondary pupils.
The young people were encouraged to come up with original artworks that represent what the people and places of Northern Ireland mean to them, and how they want their home to be seen by global golf fans.
Kathryn was joined on the judging panel by Naomi Waite, Tourism NI's director of marketing, Fran Porter, arts and cultural facilities officer with Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, and Miller Cornelius, brand manager at The R&A.
The winning designs will be on public display in Belfast and Portrush and used as part of Tourism NI's welcome for visitors to the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush later this month.
Kathryn said it was a privilege to be able to judge the competition, with the quality of the entries consistently excellent.
She says: 'There was so much talent. It was clear that the young people put their heart and soul into the competition and the standard was outstanding.
'The creativity was incredible and what stood out was that the entries were a real celebration of Northern Ireland, representing all that is great about this place.
'Displaying the winning artwork will be a lovely way to welcome visitors to the 153rd Open, while the competition has helped stir a real interest in the event with young people.'
Kathryn has also just completed a series of works celebrating Northern Ireland's rich golfing heritage which will be on display at The Bushmills Inn throughout July as The Open takes place at Royal Portrush.
The series of 13 paintings features scenes from Royal Portrush, Royal Belfast, Royal County Down, Ardglass and other courses.
In addition, the six winning artworks from the Tourism NI competition will be on display to showcase the tremendous talent of our young people and excitement for the return of The Open.
Kathryn says: 'I would have loved to be a golfer, I've taken several lessons, but I have had to accept that my talents lie elsewhere.
'Travelling to the courses throughout last winter was a brilliant experience.
'There was always someone there to give you a warm welcome and explain what was special about each place. For me, it was about trying to capture the essence of each course — that's what I want to put onto the page when I am pouring.
'I want people to be able to look at the painting and be able to close their eyes and feel transported to that place. We have so many stunning courses, especially our links courses. They are just beautiful places to be and visitors coming here for the first time just can't believe what special places they are.
'For example, when you think of Royal Portrush, it's that mix of the wild ocean and seagrass set against the contrast of the manicured greens.
'Golf courses in Northern Ireland are like a basket of treats for visitors; you can select a different world-class venue to play every day and you aren't travelling for hours to get there — they are all in close proximity.'
Northern Ireland has provided the inspiration for a number of Kathryn's works and last summer she launched the Kathryn Callaghan NI Art Trail which encouraged fans of her work to travel to various locations to view the original pieces.
The paintings included scenes from Bloody Bridge just outside Newcastle, the Mournes from Murlough, Strangford village, Bangor Pier, the Glens of Antrim, Ballintoy Harbour, Causeway Rocks and White Rocks from Magheracross Viewpoint, West Strand, Portrush and Benone Strand.
Kathryn adds: 'From memories of childhood holidays to inspiration for adventures to come, the paintings encouraged people to get out and embrace Northern Ireland's giant spirit.'

Fiona, 64, revealed she was battling Alzheimer's in 2023 — the same cruel disease that claimed both her parents. The heartbreaking news made headlines, but the truth behind her journey is even more raw and emotional. In her new memoir, Remember When: My Life with Alzheimer's, Fiona lifts the lid on her private pain and the devastating toll it took on her marriage to former editor of ITV's This Morning, Martin Frizell, 65. And he makes the brutally honest admission that he wished his wife had been diagnosed with cancer instead, calling Alzheimer's a 'cruel, drawn-out torture' that has turned their world upside down. Martin has now stepped back from work to care for his wife full-time. 'But that's not there for Alzheimer's. 'Just like there are no funny or inspiring TikTok videos or fashion shoots with smiling, healthy, in-remission survivors.' He goes on: 'After someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, they are pretty much left to their own devices. 'There is nothing more that can be done and you are left to cope alone.' Back in January 1997, Fiona felt like the 'luckiest woman alive' when she landed the job of a lifetime as lead presenter on GMTV. But behind the scenes, it was pressure-cooker stuff — 4am starts, non-stop stress and a producer 'barking' in her earpiece. At home, life was just as intense. With two young sons, Nathanial and Mackenzie, plus a weekly newspaper column, radio show and endless TV gigs, she was 'running on empty'. Weekends were spent away in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Soon after losing his wife, her dad Phil was diagnosed with the same illness. Fiona previously said the drive from London to Wales every other weekend with the two boys strapped in the backseat 'nearly cracked me up'. She left GMTV in December 2008 — reportedly midway through a £1.5million contract, which cost her £500,000 — to spend more time with her family. Fiona admitted back then that the decision was the 'hardest I have ever had to make — like jumping off a cliff and hoping someone will save me halfway down',. But she revealed she had 'finally discovered that I can't have it all' and felt like she was 'dropping balls' all over the place. While Fiona finally had more time to dedicate to Martin and the boys, her career never quite recovered. She took on bits and pieces of work — including a stint on Strictly Come Dancing in 2005 and presenting a Channel 4 documentary titled Mum, Dad, Alzheimer's and Me in 2009. But Meanwhile, she was starting to struggle with mood swings, erratic behaviour and an inability to complete everyday tasks, such as going to the bank. 6 Fiona with her dad Phil, who died in 2012 after battling Alzheimer's Credit: Channel 4 6 Martin said he wished his wife had been diagnosed with cancer, because at least there was hope of a cure for sufferers Credit: Getty Things came to a head with Martin in 2021 and he moved out of the family home, accusing her of 'zoning out' of their marriage. After three weeks apart, the couple met at a hotel and agreed they wanted to stay together — but things had to change. Fiona had initially suspected the exhaustion, But by then, Fiona was wondering if her symptoms were down to menopause. Martin urged her to talk to telly doctor Dr Louise Newson, who specialised in menopause and recommended a course of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). But after several months of seeing little change, Dr Newson recommended she was properly assessed. In 2022, a consultant broke the heartbreaking news to the couple that Fiona, then 61, had early onset Alzheimer's. It's something I might have thought I'd get at 80…but I was still only 61. My poor mum was crippled with it, then my dad. It keeps coming back for us. Fiona Fiona had secretly feared that one day it would come for her, too, after it 'decimated' her family. But the news still came as a shock. Writing in her book, she recalls: 'Neither of us said a word. 'We sat rigid, locked in suspended animation between everything our lives had been before this moment and everything they would become beyond it.' She previously told the Mirror: 'It's something I might have thought I'd get at 80 . . . but I was still only 61 years old. "My poor mum was crippled with it, then my dad, my grandparents, my uncle. It just keeps coming back for us.' Fiona and Martin kept her diagnosis quiet for a year, as she hated the idea of becoming 'an object of gossip or even pity'. 'Horrible secret' Gradually, the couple began to feel they should tell more people, so Fiona would be understood and not judged if she began behaving strangely. Realising the impact she could have by raising awareness of the disease's symptoms, Fiona characteristically insisted she was 'getting on with it', adding of her illness: 'I'm not taking notice of it. 'I'm just doing what I normally do. 'I don't want to not work, be sitting around playing with my fingers or watching telly. 'I just like doing things.' She told the Mirror: 'All over the country, there are people of all different ages whose lives are being affected by it — it's heartbreaking. 'I just hope I can help find a cure which might make things better for others in the future . . . it's a horrible bloody secret to divulge.' While there is no cure for Alzheimer's, Fiona is currently taking drugs to slow the illness's progression. She also joined a trial programme for a drug called Miridesap at University College Hospital in London, in a bid to slow the effects of the disease. But Fiona now needs a lot of help with everyday tasks including showering, brushing her teeth and getting dressed. At times, she becomes distressed and confused, shouting at him that he isn't her husband. It is something he finds difficult, but understands that the illness has 'taken her mind'. Martin admitted the journey is an exhausting and lonely one, writing that it breaks his heart to see his 'strong, independent wife has become so vulnerable'. He adds: 'I'd like to tell you Fiona is content in the situation into which she has been forced. 'I'd like to give readers some sense that she is at peace. 'But that wouldn't be the truth. 'She isn't — she is frustrated every single day. And depressed. 'I miss her. I miss my wife.' [...] I have a really good judge of character and I knew something was up. I knew that was not Josh. Brit, 22, arrested at Disneyland Paris after 'trying to marry girl, 9, in bizarre ceremony at Sleeping Beauty castle' Stapleton's arrest followed an investigation launched by the Cartersville Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division, supported by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the US Department of Homeland Security. The investigation was launched based on a tip submitted through the Internet Crimes Against Children program. Addressing another question from concerned social media users, Brittany defended that the couple's friends with children are aware of the charges against Stapleton. She said: " We've always been absolutely upfront with everyone. And guess what? "A lot of these people have our backs because they have personally witnessed Josh around their children and know that there's no issue." He ultimately accepted a non-negotiable plea deal and pleaded guilty to 20 counts, while the remaining 20 charges were dropped. Brittani shockingly rejected the claim that child images were on his "work laptop," slamming them as "false". She ranted: " Josh could not possibly have that on his work laptop because if you have ever worked for a corporation or any big company or anything along those lines, you know how secure those computers are." I can assure you that nothing about us was fake." Stapleton will have to abide by multiple " sex offender" conditions upon his release.
