Mid-tier firms poised to win large AI market share: Sonata Software CEO Samir Dhir
ADVERTISEMENT 'Many of these generation-1 companies have long-running annuity contracts, and AI, at the heart of it, is going to disrupt some of those manual-intensive contracts,' Dhir told ET. 'Over the next two to five years' time, we can take a large chunk of the market away from this competition.'
Several recent wins have come against the tier-1 providers, who now face the challenge of defending their legacy revenue streams, he said.
The Bengaluru-headquartered, mid-tier, $1-billion company's strategy involves revenue cannibalisation and going after low-end manual work, with a focus on automation with new-age technology like agentic AI, said Dhir.
Sonata Software on Tuesday introduced an agentic AI platform for customers to centrally design, deploy and govern intelligent and industry-specific AI agents to automate tasks in areas like healthcare, BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance), retail, and manufacturing. Further, despite macroeconomic uncertainties, clients are doubling down to 'sweat every dollar to modernise faster', Dhir said, as business imperatives haven't changed from a differentiation or customer retention perspective.
ADVERTISEMENT While the outlook from banking and healthcare clients is positive, the retail segment is still cautious and waiting for more certainty before taking big decisions, he said.In recent quarters, mid-tier companies have been bagging big deals and generally outperforming larger peers despite a bad macroeconomic environment.
ADVERTISEMENT These players benefit from greater speed and agility and are hungrier, said Dhir, who expects the existing pecking order of the IT industry to be disrupted by a few such midcap firms in the coming decade.About 45% of Sonata's active pipeline comprises large deals. In FY25, its revenue grew by about 18% to Rs 10,157.2 crore. It won two large deals in Q4, with a 2.4% increase in PAT, although revenue fell by 7.9% quarter-on-quarter.
ADVERTISEMENT Sonata's strategy for the past few years has been to dilute its Ebitda by about 2% to invest back into verticalising the business, as well as building capabilities in technologies like AI. The company expects 20% of its business to be in AI in three years, from about 4-5% now.
When it comes to enterprise adoption of AI, Dhir said the company is still seeing progress in 'bits and bytes', rather than at a large scale. A turning point can come at any time, he said, adding that the company is focusing on being ready to capitalise on it.

In Karnataka, Shakti scheme ticket count set to cross 500-crore mark
Bengaluru: On Monday, the Shakti scheme — offering free bus travel for women in the state — is set to cross the 500-crore ridership milestone. To mark the occasion, chief minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar will travel in a city bus and personally issue tickets to women passengers. Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy told TOI that at the district level, committees overseeing implementation of the five guarantee schemes will celebrate the milestone by distributing sweets and flowers. The Shakti scheme was the first of the five guarantees launched by Congress govt. From June 11, 2023 to July 11, 2025, the state's four road transport corporations — KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC — issued over 497 crore tickets. The corporations have spent a whopping Rs 12,614 crore to provide free travel facilities for women on ordinary bus services. Out of nearly 25,000 buses, women are allowed to travel in over 20,000. In June this year, conductors issued more than 73 lakh tickets daily to women availing of the free travel benefit. In the first month of the scheme's launch, RTCs issued over 10 crore tickets, incurring an expenditure of Rs 250 crore. In the second month, the number of tickets issued rose to nearly 20 crore, and the cost reached Rs 453 crore. Patronage continued to grow in the following months. The highest number of tickets — over 22 crore — was issued in May 2025, accounting for Rs 670 crore. Following an upward revision in bus fares in Jan 2025, the expenditure to provide free travel under the scheme saw a significant jump. Reddy said, "Naturally, when there is a revision in bus fares, the cost of providing benefits under the scheme increases. During festive seasons and holidays, we also see increased patronage. As promised, the state govt has been supporting RTCs by reimbursing the expenditure. Except for a pending amount of Rs 2,750 crore, RTCs have received the rest of the funds spent under the scheme." He stated that the govt has extended additional financial support to RTCs by providing a loan of Rs 2,000 crore and facilitating the induction of new buses. "After coming to power, we have taken measures to induct 5,800 new buses and recruit 10,000 staff, including 1,000 on compassionate grounds. RTCs currently have a liability of Rs 4,000 crore due to the lack of support from the previous BJP govt," Reddy added.

Will check if existing building can be used for penguin park: Zoo official
Mysuru: The proposed penguin park, which was suggested after shelving a 15-year-old aquarium project at Mysuru zoo, is likely to be another tourist attraction in the city. After the efforts of the zoo authorities were unsuccessful in securing funds for the aquarium project and convincing the tourism department to take the project forward, it was decided to abandon it. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Now, there is a fresh proposal to establish a penguin park on the lines of Mumbai and Ahmedabad under the PPP model. And, this project requires approximately Rs 70 crore. Mysuru zoo executive director KN Rangaswamy said that the penguin park project is still in the preliminary stage. The proposal will be submitted after a feasibility study, he stated. The structural stability of the existing defunct building constructed for the aquarium project, where the Penguin Park is planned, will also be studied, he explained. Dead-end project However, tourism stakeholders see it as another possible dead-end project, suggesting that the govt provide facilities for tourists instead of making fresh proposals. Many projects have reached a dead end without serving the purpose, and the latest was the aquarium project. The building was constructed after spending crores of rupees, and now the govt is trying to use the defunct building, which requires huge amount of funds. Stakeholders claimed netas lack vision for tourism development in Mysuru, which receives over 4 million visitors annually. SKAL International, Mysuru chapter, president CA Jayakumar said a well-defined vision, coupled with measurable goals, ensures projects stay on track. The govt should focus on delivering value, he added. Meanwhile, KV Rajendra, director of Karnataka Tourism, said the Eco Experience Zone (EEZ) project aims to provide tourists with a better Mysuru experience. Under the Eco Experience Zone initiative, all three popular tourist spots–Mysuru Zoo, Karanji Lake, and Regional Museum of Natural History—situated adjacent to each other, will offer visitors single-entry access for a full day of nature-based activities. The tender process will be floated soon, he said.
