Is Carlos Alcaraz the new king of Wimbledon?

LeMonde2 days ago
Just as Paris Saint-Germain appears to be ushering football into a new era, could Carlos Alcaraz be doing the same for tennis? The Spaniard, who faces world number one Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final on Sunday, July 13, is on a 24-match winning streak. He has won in Rome, Roland Garros and Queen's. Not bad for a player who some considered inconsistent.
Beyond this string of victories, it is the astonishing level of play Alcaraz has reached during this Wimbledon fortnight that stands out. Yet Alcaraz does not systematically crush his opponents. Arthur Fils nearly beat him in Monte-Carlo, as did Jaume Munar at Queen's Club. Fabio Fognini pushed him to a fifth set in the first round at Wimbledon. Against the 38-year-old Italian, now ranked 138 th in the world, Alcaraz grew frustrated. "He has the level to play until he's 50 years old!" the Spaniard exclaimed toward his box in the fourth set, before raising his game and closing the match with a decisive 6-1.
Is it overconfidence? Loss of focus? "He is less consistent than Jannik Sinner, but when the level rises at a Grand Slam, he always shows up," said Arnaud Clément, former world number 10 and an Eurosport analyst. Under the guidance of Juan Carlos Ferrero, Alcaraz has become a player for the big stage: He has won five Grand Slam finals out of five. His early career ranks him among the most precocious players in history, alongside Rafael Nadal, Björn Borg and John McEnroe. If he wins a sixth major on Sunday, he will join Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker at the age of just 22.

PSG falls short in Club World Cup final after an 'exceptional' season

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) ultimately stumbled at the final hurdle. Although considered the favorite, the French capital's club lost to Chelsea (3-0) in the FIFA Club World Cup final on Sunday, July 13, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. This defeat prevented PSG from capturing the coveted fifth trophy and expanding their dominance to the global stage, after already making history with their quadruple (UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1, Coupe de France and Trophée des Champions). The European champions were unrecognizable as they collapsed against a formidable London side. The London team dominated from the outset and led 3-0 at halftime. Cole Palmer scored twice (in the 22 nd and 30 th minutes) and assisted João Pedro (in the 43 rd minute) on a goal. Palmer capitalized on rare lapses in the PSG's defense. It was a match to forget for PSG, especially PSG's head coach Luis Enrique, who clashed with Pedro after the final whistle amid post-match tensions on the pitch. Against Chelsea, the Parisians looked tired after a seemingly endless season, in which they played 65 matches, including 17 in the Champions League. On Sunday night, the contrast was stark between PSG's lack of freshness and the energy the Blues expended to press the Parisian players and prevent them from building their play. It was as if Chelsea had turned PSG's own game against them, suffocating them with relentless activity, a tactic PSG had so often used themselves.

Chelsea stun PSG to win first edition of expanded Club World Cup

In the Women's Euro, France secured a last eight spot with a 5-2 win over the Netherlands. France will face Germany in the quarter-finals, while England will take on Sweden. In tennis, Jannik Sinner got his revenge over Carlos Alcaraz by winning Wimbledon for the first time. In the Tour de France, Tim Merlier won Stage 9 despite Mathieu van der Poel's heroic breakaway, as he was caught by the peloton 700 meters from the finish.
