NIA investigates Maoist hijacking of explosives in Odisha's Sundargarh

) on Thursday launched an investigation into Tuesday's hijacking of explosive materials by Maoist insurgents from a stone quarry in Odisha's Sundargarh district, bordering Jharkhand, Odisha Police sources said.
The brazen loot of 4 tonnes of gelatin sticks in Rourkela's K Balang police jurisdictions raised serious security concerns.
"This is a matter of grave concern as these explosives could be potentially used for anti-national activities. NIA has stepped in and started their probe. We are working closely with the NIA and Jharkhand police to track and recover the stolen materials,' a senior police officer told TOI.
Security experts warn that the quantity of stolen explosives poses a significant threat.
"Four tonnes of gelatin sticks in the wrong hands could cause devastating damage,' S K Sahoo, a retired cop said.
According to sources, the NIA has formed special teams to track the movement of Maoist groups in the region and recover the stolen explosives.
A high-level meeting was conducted between NIA officials and senior police officers from Odisha and Jharkhand to coordinate the investigation and develop strategic responses.

Around 10 am on Tuesday, about 25-30 armed Naxals stormed the quarry under K Balang police limits in Rourkela, near Saranda forests neighbouring Maoist-infested Jharkhand, holding two labourers and a manager at gunpoint after the explosives-laden lorry arrived. The armed group compelled the driver to operate the vehicle under duress.
They released him at Relhatu area under K Balang police station around 5 pm. 'We have intensified patrolling in the area and set up checkpoints at key locations,' DIG (western range) Brijesh Rai said.
The brazen incident marked a significant Maoist operation after an extended period of reduced LWE activity in Odisha, triggering apprehension of a disruption of the Centre's objective to establish a 'Maoist free' India by March 2026.
The daylight theft of 4-tonnes of gelatin sticks has raised concerns as Sundargarh had been declared Naxal-free in April 2024. DIG Rai mentioned that Sundargarh, free from Maoist activities and violence for over ten years, was removed from the left-wing extremism (LWE) affected areas list and the Centre's security-related expenditure (SRE) scheme last year.

Vijayawada: A 24-year-old woman, identified as Varre Srividya, allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Vuyyuru of Krishna district, following sustained physical and emotional abuse by her husband. A lecturer at a private college and an MSc graduate, Srividya reportedly ended her life late on Sunday, just days ahead of Raksha Bandhan, leaving behind a poignant note that read, "Sorry, I can't tie rakhi this year," addressed to her younger brother. According to the police, Srividya was married to Arun Kumar, a village surveyor from Kalavapamula in Vuyyuru mandal, on April 23. Arun Kumar, along with his parents, has been accused of subjecting Srividya to continuous harassment and dowry-related demands. Police said Srividya's suicide note detailed repeated instances of domestic violence that began soon after the wedding. She accused her husband of physically assaulting her — including pulling her by the hair, banging her head against doors, and verbally humiliating her in the presence of another woman named Sai. However, by the time he arrived, she was found hanging at her residence. Nagaraju alleged that Arun Kumar had been harassing Srividya over financial matters, including pressuring the family to sell their house in Vuyyur and hand over the proceeds. He claimed that Rs 10 lakh in cash and gold worth another Rs 10 lakh had already been given at the time of the marriage. Following the complaint, Vuyyur town police registered a case against Arun Kumar and his parents under relevant sections related to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. Arun Kumar is currently absconding. The body was shifted to the Government General Hospital under the Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences for post-mortem and later handed over to the family members. Police said a manhunt has been launched to trace the accused and further inquiries are underway.

CB-CID would complete caste killing probe in 2 months: State to HC
Madurai: The state on Tuesday informed the Madras high court that the CB-CID would complete the investigation and file the final report within two months in the caste killing case of C Kavin Selva Ganesh, in Tirunelveli. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by S M A Pon Gandhimathinathan. The petitioner sought a direction for a district judge to monitor the CB-CID probe into the caste killing incident and to provide compensation to the family members of the deceased man. The petitioner also sought a direction to the state to enact special legislation to prevent caste killing incidents. During the course of the hearing, the state informed that following the incident, swift actions were taken by the Palayamkottai police, who registered a case and arrested the accused, Surjith, on the same day of the incident on July 27. Police also arrested Surjith's father, Saravanan, who was working as a sub-inspector of police, on July 30. As per SC/ST Act and Rules, interim compensation was paid to the family members of the deceased. Subsequently, the case was also transferred to the CB-CID, who registered a case and commenced their investigation. However, the petitioner's counsel submitted that Surjith's mother, Krishnakumari, who is also a sub-inspector of police, was not yet arrested in the case. He submitted that an inspector of police, Kasipandian, threatened the deceased before the date of occurrence and acted in favour of the accused's family. This aspect should also be looked into by the investigating officer. Since it is a gruesome caste killing, a district judge should monitor the CB-CID probe in the case. A division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice A D Maria Clete observed that the CB-CID commenced the investigation in the case. Taking into account the fact that the petitioner had not raised any allegation against the investigating team, the judges directed the CB-CID to complete the investigation in the case and file a final report within two months, as per the state's submission.
