Malton filly has a bright future after passing latest test at Redcar Races

Yahoo27-05-2025
MALTON trainer Tim Easterby's two-year-olds are flying and he was clearly impressed after Bleep Test justified favouritism at Redcar today.
'She's got a lot of potential,' said the trainer after the Time Test filly stayed on strongly under David Allan to hold off Ollie Sangster's well-backed Lovethiswayagain and Jamie Spencer in the opening EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
The first two pulled well clear of the rest and both look nice fillies, with the winner running in the colours of the Reality Partnerships syndicate.
Bleep Test had finished a promising second to Karl Burke's well-regarded Ali Shuffle on her debut at Redcar on April 7, and Easterby said: 'She's smart and tough. First time out she was very green and backward in her coat, but she's been working really well at home. She has lots of toe and I thought it was a good performance."
Evergreen jockey Joe Fanning produced a trademark ride, dictating from the front, to land the racingtv.com Maiden Handicap on Cracksman filly Rommie The Miracle, trained at Middleham by Charlie Johnston.
Johnston was narrowly denied a quick double when Mafting, trained by David O'Meara, kept pulling out more under Danny Tudhope to beat Burj Zabeel by a neck in the Watch Racing On Racing TV Restricted Maiden Stakes.
O'Meara said: "He was still green in front and had a little wobble a furlong out. He's done nothing wrong up to now and might handle a bit more ease in the ground."
The gelding had been runner-up in a Beverley novice and Hamilton maiden leading up to Redcar.
Mafting, a son of Too Darned Hot, is owned by Gallop Racing, and syndicate representative Richard Walker explained that 'Mafting' is Yorkshire dialect for hot conditions.
Mr Walker added: "He should have won at Hamilton – it was just one of those things and he got done on the line. He was a worthy favourite today and we thought we'd try it from the front. He toughed it out, but frontrunning probably didn't suit him."
There was a front-running hat-trick when Jet Black, trained in Hampshire by Andrew Balding, ground it out to win the Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Fillies' Handicap under PJ McDonald.
"She's learning on the job and has actually won quite comfortably in the end. She would benefit from an extra couple of furlongs," said the winning rider after the Kodiac filly outstayed Luke Morris on Spirit of the Bay.
Electric Avenue rocked down to the winning post to land the Join Racing TV Now Handicap under a fine ride from Tom Eaves.
Ivan Furtado, who trains the winner for the Making Headway Racing syndicate, said: "Tom gave her a great ride from a tricky draw and there's more to come from her."
It looked for a long way like the 10-year-old Poet's Dawn was in for an 11th career win to seal a double for Tim Easterby, but the veteran gelding couldn't hold off the winner's electric surge in the final furlong.
It's been a good two days at Redcar for Malton yards and Ollie Pears kept the run going with Eighteen Fourteen, ridden by Cam Hardie, taking the Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Handicap by a head from Due Respect.
Martin Pearson, of the Crystal Clear Racing syndicate, said: "He's a talented horse but doesn't always show it!'
The day ended with dairy farmer Rosie Howarth milking the applause after landing the Watch Race Replays On Racing TV Amateur Jockeys' Handicap on Monsieur Fantaisie for North Yorkshire trainer Roger Fell.
The 5lbs claimer didn't have a clear run but swooped late to deny Olly Pears a double with Let's Go Hugo.
Rosie, who was out milking cows on the family farm near Pickering on the morning of the race, said: "It didn't exactly go according to plan, but we got there!"
The winning trainer added: "The more trouble this horse gets into the better chance you've got, and Rosie gave him a great ride. I was impressed."

Hamilton says 'understeer' cost him front row spot on British GP grid

Lewis Hamilton has yet to claim pole position for a Grand Prix since joining Ferrari (Andrej ISAKOVIC) Home hero Lewis Hamilton said an error on his final flying lap in qualifying on Saturday cost him a probable front row starting position on the grid for the British Grand Prix. The 40-year-old seven-time world champion, who has won his home race a record nine times and taken seven pole positions, admitted one slight mistake had proved costly. Advertisement "I just had understeer on turn 16 and I lost the time that I had –- it probably cost me a place on the front row," he said. Hamilton, seeking his maiden podium position for Ferrari, ended up two-tenths off pole-sitter four-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull, but was frustrated that his and Ferrari's excellent progress had not been rewarded. "I'm pleased overall," he said. "I'm pleased with our progress and our direction. I feel my engineer and I have been gelling better in terms of how we set the car up and I am happier in the car. "The lap was really nice until that last corner. It was just a bit of understeer. I don't know if it was the kerb that put me a little wide, but then I just lost it." Advertisement Team-mate Charles Leclerc was also disappointed and blamed himself for failing to put together his best possible lap. "I made too many mistakes and it is a pity," he said, having qualified sixth behind Hamilton. str/nf

Veteran Bo Levi Mitchell throws five TD strikes to lead Ticats past Argos 51-38

TORONTO - Bo Levi Mitchell threw five touchdown passes to lead the Hamilton Tiger-Cats past the Toronto Argonauts 51-38 on Friday night. Mitchell cemented the win with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Kiondre Smith at 4:29 of the fourth quarter that put Hamilton ahead 44-26. It came after Toronto had pulled to within 37-26. Mitchell completed 19-of-24 passes for 332 yards with no interceptions and became the 11th player in CFL history to crack the 40,000-yard plateau. The 35-year-old native of Katy, Texas, improved his career record against Toronto to 16-2. Toronto pulled to within 44-32 on Khalan Laborn's one-yard run at 8:01. Following consecutive procedure penalties, Nick Arbuckle's pass for the two-point convert was incomplete. Then Hamilton's Isaiah Wooden Sr. returned the kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown at 8:47. Hamilton (2-2) has won its last four games against Toronto (1-4) after going 3-0 last year against the defending Grey Cup champions. The Argos also dropped to 0-3 at home, to the dismay of a BMO Field gathering of 12,701. Hamilton earned its first road victory of 2025 and only its second win in its last eight visits to BMO Field. Arbuckle finished 27-of-38 passing for 339 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Arbuckle's six-yard TD pass to Kevin Mital at 14:08 rounded out the scoring as the two-point convert was unsuccessful. Kenny Lawler, with three, Tyler Ternowski and Greg Bell had Hamilton's other touchdowns. Marc Liegghio booted six converts and a field goal. Kevin Brown, Janarion Grant and Damonte Coxie scored Toronto's other touchdowns. Lirim Hajrullahu added two converts and two field goals. One play after Toronto punter John Haggerty was flagged for an illegal kick, Mitchell hit Lawler on a 46-yard touchdown pass at 11:08 of the third. That put Hamilton ahead 37-19 as the convert was unsuccessful. Arbuckle countered with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Coxie at 14:57 to cut Hamilton's lead to 37-26. Bell capped Hamilton's opening possession of the third with a six-yard TD run at 6:34. But Grant returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for the touchdown at 7:09, cutting Hamilton's advantage to 31-19 as the two-point convert was unsuccessful. Mitchell's three first-half TD passes staked Hamilton to its 24-13 halftime lead. The Ticats averaged nine yards per play in the opening half and were a stellar seven-of-10 on second down. Mitchell was 11-of-14 passing for 186 yards as Hamilton's offence amassed 207 net yards (compared to 132 for Toronto). Hajrullahu's 53-yard field goal at 12:42 of the second cut Hamilton's lead to 24-13. Mitchell ended a nine-play, 70-yard march with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ternowski at 7:06 to put the Ticats ahead 24-10. Hajrullahu's 50-yard field goal at 1:40 had pulled Toronto to within 17-10. Mitchell found Lawler on a 79-yard TD strike at 13:31 of the first that put Hamilton ahead 17-7. It followed Liegghio's 44-yard boot at 10:13, which was set by Wooden Sr.'s 51-yard punt return. Lawler made it 7-7 with a 25-yard TD catch at 6:21 that immediately followed former Argo DaShaun Amos's interception. Brown opened the scoring with a two-yard run at 3:21 that capped a six-play, 68-yard drive to start the contest. UP NEXT Tiger-Cats: Host the Ottawa Redblacks on Saturday, July 12. Argonauts: Visit the Montreal Alouettes on July 17. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 4, 2025. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. Lewis Hamilton would recommend Mercedes switch to Max Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton revealed he would give a glowing Mercedes reference to Max Verstappen, should the Dutchman decide its time to leave Red Bull and join the Silver Arrows. Rumours persist that Verstappen could be tempted to leave Red Bull at the end of this year, with Mercedes thought to be a strong option as his current car continues to present struggles for the four-time world champion. Advertisement Hamilton, Verstappen's long-term rival, left Mercedes for Ferrari ahead of the 2025 campaign having won six of his own seven drivers titles driving for the German manufacturer. However, asked if he would promote Mercedes to Verstappen, Hamilton was unequivocal, while also admitting guilt to having previously labelled Red Bull as 'just a drinks company.' Asked if he would recommend his former team, Hamilton said: 'Of course. I mean, he's coming from a great team. Many, many years ago, I was being asked something about, I can't remember. Advertisement 'And I always regretted it, because I was just saying that Mercedes at the time was just great. I was really just trying to G up my team, but the truth is, Red Bull have been an incredible team. 'There's so many people there that are exceptional, and they've dominated for years. But what I can say, if anyone was going to ask me about Mercedes, it's an amazing team also. 'With, naturally, the passion, they've got great personnel, it's a great factory, great environment to work in. So, of course I would say, be interested to see what happens.' Verstappen has been a long-term target for Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who admitted on more than one occasion that talks have occurred with the Red Bull driver. Advertisement Asked at the British Grand Prix media day why his camp was in discussions with Mercedes, Verstappen replied: 'Who says that?,' and, having been told it was Wolff, he said: 'I have nothing to add.'
