Former armed forces chief Aziz appointed NS Training Council chairman
The appointment, effective from April 14, 2025 to April 13, 2028, was endorsed by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and announced by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Khaled said under the National Service Training Act 2003, the council functions as the minister's key advisory body and must include a chairman, five government representatives, and three to five representatives from Malaysia's major ethnic groups.
The council also comprises four members from key communities and regions.
"The government representatives are Defence Ministry secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali; Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hashim; Higher Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Anesee Ibrahim; Youth and Sports Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Nagulendran Kanayatkarasu; and Women, Family and Community Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Maziah Che Yusoff.
"Also representing Malaysia's main communities in the council are Malaysian Youth Council president Mohd Izzat Afifi Abdul Hamid, deputy president Soon Honn Keong, and Professor Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian.
"Also in the council is Sabah Chief Minister's Department Internal Affairs and Research secretary Datuk Abang Shahminan Abang Sahari," he said in his speech.
Khaled also said the reintroduction of the National Service programme marked the government's unwavering commitment to shaping a patriotic, disciplined and united younger generation, and that the council's formation was key to that mission.
"We believe that while not everyone may be 100 per cent patriotic or willing to sacrifice for the nation, we must earnestly pursue a process or intervention that ensures there is a strong core within our society — individuals with deep patriotic spirit and love for the nation.
"To me, this is of great importance and must not be taken lightly. For the ministry and the government at large, we aspire to foster a society where there will always be a generation that is aware of its role, responsibility, and value to the nation," he said.
Also present at the ceremony were current Armed Forces chief General Datuk Mohd Nizam Jaffar and Royal Malaysian Air Force chief General Tan Sri Asghar Khan Goriman Khan.
On Feb 25, a total of 116 trainees nationwide completed the NS 3.0 Series 1/2025 after undergoing 45 days of training that began on Jan 12.
The next intake, Series 2/2025, is scheduled to run from May 11 to June 24, followed by Series 3/2025 from Sept 7 to Oct 21.
It will be held at either the 515th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Kuala Lumpur or the 505th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan, Pahang.

PM arrives in Paris for two-day official visit
PARIS: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in Paris to begin his maiden official visit to France. The aircraft carrying Anwar and his delegation landed at Pavillon d'Honneur Orly Airport at 4.10pm local time from Rome. He was received on arrival by Malaysia's Ambassador to France, Datuk Eldeen Husaini, and senior French government officials. Anwar is accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; Transport Minister Anthony Loke; Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu; Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin; and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz. As part of efforts to attract global investment, particularly from France, the Prime Minister is scheduled to attend a roundtable meeting with leading French industry players. KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has embarked on an inaugural official visit to France from July 3 to 4 at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron. Malaysia's Ambassador to France Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim said the visit carries an official status and signifies France's strong commitment towards its diplomatic ties with Malaysia since Anwar assumed premiership in 2022. "This official visit status is also significant for the continued strengthening of our bilateral diplomatic ties," he said to the Malaysian media through an online conference from Paris on Wednesday. Eldeen Husaini said Anwar would be received by the French top leadership at the airport, followed by an inspection of a guard of honour and an engagement session with the Malaysian diaspora in France. Anwar is scheduled to hold a one-on-one meeting with Macron at the Élysée Palace, with key agenda items including trade, investment, renewable energy, semiconductors, defence, education, digital economy, and artificial intelligence (AI). "Malaysia expects this official visit will boost investor confidence in exploring new investment opportunities and strengthen bilateral economic cooperation, particularly in the nuclear and clean energy sectors," he told the Malaysian media in an online briefing from Paris on Wednesday. Malaysia succeeds in attracting RM8.13b potential investments from Italy
ROME: Potential investments worth RM8.13 billion have been achieved through the Malaysia-Italy economic cooperation roundtable meeting and meetings with companies here, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The roundtable meeting involved the participation of 41 Italian companies and agencies, comprising 23 companies from the manufacturing sector, nine companies from the service sector, two companies from the trade sector as well as five government agencies and two industrial organisations. 'The potential investments achieved through these two meetings are worth RM8.13 billion in the petrochemical, machinery and equipment, electrical and electronics, and oil and gas services and equipment sectors,' he said at a press conference at the end of his visit to Rome, Italy. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the potential exports generated were worth RM425 million for oleochemical products, renewable energy, biofuel feedstocks, animal feed additives and food. The roundtable meeting allowed potential companies in Italy an opportunity to express their desire to collaborate with Malaysian companies in various sectors such as high-tech manufacturing, renewable energy, digital economy and sustainable infrastructure. Meanwhile, Anwar said that in a bilateral meeting with his counterpart Giorgia Meloni, Rome and Putrajaya would increase cooperation in the energy, solar, geothermal and hydrogen sectors. Among the collaborations are the Petronas and Eni SpA joint venture in Pengerang, Johor in the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sector; Perodua and Magna Styer for electric vehicle batteries; and collaboration and investment in the modernisation of the electricity grid, including the ASEAN Power Grid (APG). In the discussion, the Prime Minister said he also applied for recognition of the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification from Italy, in addition to requesting support for a fairer assessment of the European Union Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR) Implementation. Malaysia aims to be in the low-risk category in the EUDR benchmark system when the rating is reviewed by 2026. Meanwhile, Malaysia has also sought Italy's support in concluding negotiations on the Malaysia-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The Prime Minister arrived here on Tuesday for a three-day working visit to Italy, the third largest economy in the EU. The visit was at the invitation of Meloni. Throughout the visit, Anwar was accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Also joining the delegation was Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Italy recorded an increase of two per cent to US$3.18 billion (RM14.61 billion) compared to the same period in 2023. For the period from January to May 2025, total trade between the two countries continued to show positive performance with an increase of 3.3 per cent to US$1.48 billion (RM6.5 billion) compared to the same period in 2024. The Prime Minister departed for France for an official visit on July 3 and 4 after concluding his visit to Italy.
