Malnutrition among Gaza children doubled under Israeli blockade: UN - War on Gaza

Al-Ahram Weekly3 days ago
Malnutrition rates among children in the Gaza Strip have doubled since Israel sharply restricted the entry of food in March, the U.N. said.
Hunger has been rising among Gaza's more than 2 million Palestinians since Israel broke a ceasefire in March to resume the war and banned all food and other supplies from entering Gaza. It slightly eased the blockade in late May, allowing in a trickle of aid.
UNRWA, the main U.N. agency caring for Palestinians in Gaza, said it had screened nearly 16,000 children under age 5 at its clinics in June and found 10.2% of them were acutely malnourished. By comparison, in March, 5.5% of the nearly 15,000 children it screened were malnourished.
Malnutrition grows
UNICEF, which screens children separately from UNRWA, also reported a marked increase in malnutrition cases. It said this week its clinics had documented 5,870 cases of malnutrition among children in June, the fourth straight month of increases and more than double the around 2,000 cases it documented in February.
Experts have warned of famine since Israel tightened its lengthy blockade in March.
Israel has allowed an average of 69 trucks a day carrying supplies, including food, since it eased the blockade in May, according to the latest figures from COGAT, the Israeli military agency in charge of coordinating aid. That is far below the hundreds of trucks a day the U.N. says are needed to sustain Gaza's population.
The U.N. says it has struggled to pick up and distribute aid because of Israeli military restrictions on its movements and the breakdown in law and order.
Israel has also let in food for distribution by an American contractor, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. GHF says it has distributed food boxes with the equivalent of more than 70 million meals since late May at the four centers it runs in the Rafah area of southern Gaza and in central Gaza.
More than 840 Palestinians have been killed and more than 5,600 others wounded in shootings as they walk for hours trying to reach the GHF centers. Witnesses say Israeli forces open fire with barrages of live ammunition to control crowds on the roads to the GHF centers, which are located in military-controlled zones.

Gaza Sees Nearly One Hundred Killed, Hundreds Injured in 48 Hours

H-Tayea The Ministry of Health in Gaza has confirmed that 98 Palestinians have been killed and 511 others injured by Israeli gunfire within the last 48 hours, marking one of the deadliest short periods in the ongoing war. Among the dead are individuals who were only recently recovered from beneath the rubble, highlighting the continued difficulty of rescue efforts. Since the beginning of the Israeli assault on October 7, 2023, Gaza's total death toll has now surged to 58,765, with 140,485 people injured. The Ministry warned that these numbers may still rise, as many victims remain under collapsed buildings or lying in open streets, unreachable by medical or civil defense teams due to the intensity of the bombardment and lack of access. From March 18, 2025, until today, the ministry reported 7,938 new deaths and 28,444 injuries, pointing to a particularly violent and destructive phase of the conflict. The ministry also reported disturbing figures about Palestinians who were killed while simply trying to secure basic necessities. In the last two days alone, 14 people were killed and more than 94 injured while attempting to collect humanitarian aid. This brings the total number of people killed while seeking food or assistance to 891, with over 5,754 others injured in similar incidents since the start of the war. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language

Trump's Health Condition Revealed after Bruise Appeared on Hand

Taarek Refaat The White House confirmed Thursday that former U.S. President Donald Trump is suffering from chronic venous insufficiency in both legs, a common but non-serious condition often seen in older adults, after noticeable bruising on his hands and legs sparked speculation about his health. Speaking to reporters, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump underwent medical imaging after signs of swelling in his lower legs and visible bruises on the backs of his hands. The results, she noted, showed no serious abnormalities. "Ultrasound imaging revealed chronic venous insufficiency, a condition not uncommon in individuals over 70,' said Leavitt, citing a letter from Trump's personal physician. 'It is benign and manageable.' The announcement comes after sharp-eyed observers noticed an unusual purplish bruise on Trump's right hand earlier this week as he boarded Marine One. The bruise appeared to be covered in makeup, sparking fresh debates online and in the press regarding his overall health. Photographs showed that the makeup used to conceal the mark did not match Trump's natural skin tone, and in some frames, what looked like a small wound or scar was visible beneath the makeup. A similar mark was also visible during his meeting with Bahrain's Crown Prince on Wednesday. This is not the first time such bruising has been spotted. Back in February, during a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump's right hand appeared yellowish and swollen, also seemingly covered in makeup, raising questions from health experts. Leavitt downplayed the concerns, attributing the bruises to frequent handshakes combined with Trump's daily low-dose aspirin regimen, a common preventive measure for cardiovascular health. "President Trump meets more Americans and shakes more hands than any other president in history,' she said. 'These marks are consistent with minor soft tissue irritation.' Still, some medical professionals have expressed concern. Dr. Stuart Fischer, an internal medicine specialist in New York, told The Daily Mail earlier this year that such bruising could stem from degenerative joint disease or fragile blood vessels, both of which are exacerbated by age. 'At 79, Trump is the second-oldest president in U.S. history. Natural aging weakens the vascular system, making bruises more pronounced,' Dr. Fischer said. 'It's likely a combination of factors at play.' Despite the recurring signs, Trump has maintained that he is in excellent health. Following his latest annual medical examination, his team released a statement affirming that he is in 'excellent overall condition.' As Trump intensifies public appearances and campaign-style events, questions around his stamina and transparency on health matters are likely to remain in the spotlight. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

South Africa to Open Four New Provincial Academic Hospitals

Nada Mustafa South Africa is set to establish four new academic hospitals in noncentral provinces. The official announcement was made by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi in Parliament, according to TV BRICS. The initiative aims to address equal access to medical training infrastructure across the country. Construction has already begun on a new academic hospital in Limpopo, which is currently 26 per cent complete. According to Motsoaledi, South Africa has ten central hospitals where medical students are currently trained, four of which are located in Gauteng province. In contrast, provinces such as Mpumalanga, North West, Limpopo, and the Northern Cape lack these facilities. The Minister also announced the complete reconstruction of several existing academic hospitals, including a major facility in KwaZulu-Natal and two others located in Tshwane and Mthatha. Motsoaledi emphasised that the planned developments form part of a broader strategy to modernise South Africa's medical training infrastructure and ensure more equitable access to healthcare education nationwide. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream
