Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar speaks to Omani counterpart Sayyid Badr
In a post on X, the EAM said that the two leaders discussed the regional developments taking place.
The EAM wrote on X, "Appreciate the telecon with FM @badralbusaidi of Oman today. Discussed recent regional developments."
Previously, Al Jazeera reported that the United States and Iran had concluded "indirect" negotiations in Muscat, Oman, and agreed to hold further talks next week. The discussions, mediated by Oman, aimed to address key issues between the two countries.
The talks were described as being conducted in a "constructive atmosphere and based on mutual respect."
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff led their respective delegations, with Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi acting as chief mediator, as per Al Jazeera.
The conversation between EAM Jaishankar and the Foreign Minister of Oman come after the two had held a bilateral meeting in February earlier this year.
During the meeting, both leaders had reviewed the full spectrum of India-Oman relations.
The EAM conveyed his appreciation to the leadership of the Sultanate of Oman for hosting the Indian Ocean Conference and for their steadfast support in strengthening India-Oman ties. Discussions also focused on avenues for further enhancing collaboration in areas of mutual interest, the MEA noted in its statement.
According to the Ministry, EAM Jaishankar also unveiled the specially designed logo celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations between India and Oman, along with Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.
As both countries prepare to commemorate this in 2025, the logo symbolises the long-standing partnership built on history, culture, and strong people-to-people ties.
Notably, EAM Jaishankar also launched the book, Mandvi to Muscat: Indian Community and the Shared History of India and Oman, along with the Foreign Minister of Oman. Brought out by the Embassy of India in Muscat, the book highlights the rich history of the Indian diaspora in Oman and the centuries-old people-to-people ties that continue to shape bilateral relations.

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday defended India's long-standing relationship with Russia, calling it "steady and time-tested," amid growing criticism from the US. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during the weekly media briefing, emphasised that India's relations with any country are based on their own merit and shouldn't be viewed through the lens of third countries "Our ties with any country stand on their merit and should not be seen from the prism of a third country. As far as India-Russia relations are concerned, we have a steady and time-tested partnership," he said. Jaiswal's comments came after a series of statements from the US, including from President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, criticising India for continuing to import discounted Russian oil despite Western sanctions over the Ukraine war. Trump, while announcing a 25% tariff on Indian goods starting August 8, had cited India's purchase of Russian oil and military equipment as one of the reasons for the punitive move. Rubio also called India's Russian oil imports a "point of irritation" in bilateral ties, suggesting that such purchases were helping fund the war in Ukraine. Jaiswal clarified that India's energy purchases are guided by market dynamics and national interests, adding that the government is unaware of any specific developments regarding Indian oil companies pausing Russian imports. "You are aware of our broad approach to energy sourcing requirements, that we look at what is available in the market and the prevailing global situation. We are not aware of any specifics," he said. MEA made it clear that India's partnership with the United States remains strong and resilient. Jaiswal stressed that the India-US relationship is rooted in shared values and interests and is capable of weathering external challenges. "India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties. This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges. We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward," he added. Earlier this week, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal told Parliament that the government is assessing the impact of the new US tariffs and will take all necessary steps to protect the national interest.

Khareef business gets boost with over 600 work permits
SALALAH, AUGUST 1 The Ministry of Labour, through its Dhofar Directorate, has issued more than 600 temporary work permits since the start of the Khareef Dhofar Season 2025, as part of efforts to facilitate commercial activity and support entrepreneurs during the peak tourism period in the governorate. According to the Director General of the Ministry's Labour Directorate in Dhofar, the temporary permits — provided free of charge — allow the hiring of expatriate workers for non-Omani-exclusive jobs, particularly roles that citizens are typically reluctant to take. He explained that the initiative helps regulate seasonal employment, meeting the surge in demand from small businesses and entrepreneurs, especially in sectors such as food services, logistics and event management. The official added that the service has seen strong demand from owners of small and seasonal enterprises, offering a legal and flexible mechanism to bring in workforce support without breaching labour regulations. Permit holders are also expected to employ and supervise Omani staff, ensuring that nationals remain engaged in seasonal business operations. He stressed that the initiative reflects the Ministry's commitment to promoting entrepreneurship and reducing administrative burdens, by waiving fees and streamlining the application and approval process. It also ensures legal compliance and labour protection across all operational fronts. This effort comes as part of wider government measures to encourage local and seasonal investment in Dhofar Governorate, which welcomes tens of thousands of visitors during the annual monsoon season. The facilitation is expected to boost the quality and scale of tourism and retail services, while maintaining a well-regulated business environment. With tourism activities intensifying across Dhofar's wilayats, demand for temporary permits is expected to grow further in the coming weeks — empowering private sector participation and supporting local economic momentum through legal seasonal employment channels.

India: Vice President election to be held on Sept 9, result on same day
New Delhi: The Election Commission on Friday announced that the polling to elect the Vice President of India will be held on September 9 and the counting will also take place on the same day. The last day for filing nominations for the Vice Presidential post is August 21. The candidature can be withdrawn till August 25. The post of Vice President was left vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on the first day of the Monsoon Parliament Session on July 21, citing health reasons. "To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution," Dhankhar's resignation letter read. On Thursday, the Election Commission of India informed that it has completed the preparation and finalised the electoral college list for the upcoming Vice-Presidential Election 2025. In a post on X, the Election Commission shared, "Accordingly, the Commission has finalised the Electoral College list for the Vice Presidential Election, 2025. These members are listed in a continuous serial order, arranged alphabetically based on the State/Union Territory of their respective Houses. The Electoral College list will be available for purchase at a counter set up in the Election Commission of India from the date of notification, which is likely to be announced soon," the post reads. The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament, in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote, and the voting in such an election is by secret ballot. An election to fill a vacancy caused by the expiry of the term of office of Vice-President is completed before the expiry of the term. In case a vacancy arises by reasons of death, resignation or removal or otherwise, the election to fill that vacancy is held as soon as possible after the occurrence. The person so elected is entitled to hold office for a full term of five years from the date he enters office.
