Tempest returns with fresh, spring vibe
After navigating a stormy journey, Tempest has returned with a refreshing spring melody, showcasing its growth.
Debuting in March 2022, the group released its fifth EP, 'Tempest Voyage,' in March last year, wrapping up its intense and charismatic "Storm Trilogy.' This time, the group has embraced the growth and achievements discovered while weathering the storm.
'The previous series revolved around the themes of sailing and storms, so we wanted this album to reflect what we gained at the end of that journey. We believe that both the rough waves and the beautiful moments we encountered during our voyage are all part of youth, which is why we chose 'youth' as the theme,' shared Hyuk.
The new EP 'Re: Full of Youth' captures freedom, love and the determination to achieve one's dreams. The album features five tracks, including the lead track 'Unfreeze,' which portrays the heart-throbbing emotions of love, and the prerelease track 'Come Back Home,' a groovy alternative R&B song.
'The first keyword we decided on when preparing this album was 'Re.' We often say, 'Let's try again, we can do it.' When we face limitations and overcome them, all of those moments define our youth. This time, we wanted to naturally and comfortably express our spirit of challenge and positivity,' explained Lew, the leader of Tempest.
Lew, who has consistently participated in lyric writing, contributed to the lyrics of the B-side track, 'Only U Can,' a sentimental guitar-driven song dedicated to the group's fans. 'As we enter our fourth year since debut, there were undoubtedly tough times when we felt exhausted, but we wanted to express our gratitude to our fans, who have given us strength to come this far.'
The members also contributed creative ideas to the album's design, Lew explained.
When asked about its 1-year hiatus, Tempest reflected on its participation in Mnet's boy group survival show, 'Road to Kingdom: Ace of Ace,' which aired from September to November, calling it one of the most significant experiences for the group.
'Competing in the survival program gave us a new perspective on the people around us. We grew more appreciative of our staff, fans and members, communicated more with our company and became more relaxed on stage,' said Hyuk.
'We broadened our perspective by experimenting with diverse stage performances. I also believe we overcame our fears and achieved growth on multiple levels,' said Hyeongseop.
Throughout the press conference, the members radiated positive energy with their bright smiles. 'If someone asks us when youth is, we would confidently say, 'It's right now,'' said Lew.

Hybe to launch new Latin American boy group 'Santos Bravos' next month
Five finalists to debut from 16 contestants across Latin America and Spain Hybe Latin America is set to unveil its next global boy group, Santos Bravos, next month through a new reality competition series of the same name. The company announced via its social media channel on Thursday that the 'Santos Bravos' reality series — filmed in Mexico — will premiere in August. A teaser video and profile images of the 16 contestants were released the same day, signaling the beginning of the project. The 16 participants, selected from hundreds of applicants, hail from diverse regions including Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Peru, Spain and the US. These aspiring artists will undergo intensive training at a customized camp, focusing on musicality, emotional expression and performance. Only five will make the final cut to debut in the boy group, and their entire journey will be revealed to global fans in real time. Santos Bravos marks Hybe's first large-scale artist development project in Latin America using its signature Training and Development system — a structure designed by Hybe Chairman Bang Si-hyuk that combines rigorous training, emotional support, storytelling and community engagement. The goal is to shape global artists with authentic growth and a strong cultural identity. 'Our goal isn't just to create a group,' said Bang. 'It's to help young Latin artists experience genuine transformation both artistically and personally. Santos Bravos is a project rooted in authenticity, emotion and connection.' The project has also drawn attention for its high-profile creative team. Kenny Ortega, best known for directing and choreographing Disney's 'High School Musical' and 'Descendants,' is serving as the project's creative director. Johnny Goldstein, who has worked with global acts like Shakira, BTS' J-Hope and Enhypen, is the lead music producer. Renowned vocal coach Raab Stevenson, whose clients include Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and Sza, is overseeing vocal training. The entire project is executive produced by Jaime Escallon, a Colombian veteran known for 'X Factor' and 'Survivor.' Meanwhile, Hybe Latin America is also producing "Pase A La Fama," another major boy band audition program in collaboration with US-based Spanish-language network Telemundo, under NBC Universal.

Controversial webtoon 'The Elementary School Student I Love' pulled, drama canceled amid backlash
'The Elementary School Student I Love' removed from major webtoon platforms, with no set date for resumption The webtoon "The Elementary School Student I Love," which has drawn widespread criticism for depicting a romantic storyline between an elementary school teacher and her student, has been pulled from distribution across major platforms, with plans for a live-action adaptation also being scrapped in response to the mounting controversy. As of now, the series is no longer available for purchase on Naver Series. 'We suspended sales of the webtoon as a precautionary measure in response to widespread user feedback suggesting there could be potential issues. There is no set date for resumption of the webtoon series,' an official from Naver Webtoon told The Korea Herald on Friday. Kakaopage has also removed access to the title. 'After recognizing the related issue, we consulted with the publisher and decided to suspend sales of the work,' said a Kakao Entertainment official, noting that a return date has not been determined. Additional platforms have followed suit. Kyobo Book Center, South Korea's largest bookstore chain, blocked search results for the series from its digital content platform on Thursday. Digital content provider Ridi has likewise removed the series from its platform. The move to suspend distribution follows intense backlash after news broke that the webtoon was being developed as a television series. The adaptation, previously announced by C&C Revolution — the original publisher — was slated to be directed by Jung Sung-hyun with a script by Jung Se-hyuk, known for theatrical work including "Rooftop Room Cat." Further details, including casting and release timelines, had yet to be announced. Serialized on multiple webtoon platforms from 2015 to 2020, "The Elementary School Student I Love" centers on Shim Cheong-ah, an elementary school teacher who forms a connection with an online gaming partner who is later revealed to be her student, Im Dang-su. Shim initially develops romantic feelings for the online game player, but those feelings turn platonic after she discovers the truth. The series received the excellence award at the inaugural World Comics Contest hosted by Lezhin Comics in 2014. Despite its accolades, the title faced intense backlash following news of its planned drama adaptation. The Korea Federation of Teachers' Associations issued a statement Tuesday condemning both the source material and its adaptation, stating: 'Attempts to sexualize children under the guise of creativity and artistic originality can never be justified.' The KFTA added, 'Considering the harmful impact this drama could have on society and educational settings, as well as the potential violence it may inflict on children and adolescents, we strongly urge an immediate halt to production.' The group further argued that portraying a teacher developing romantic feelings for an underage student is 'a clear glamorization of grooming' and not a legitimate form of storytelling in any genre. In response to the backlash, production company Meta New Line confirmed via a local outlet on Friday that it would abandon the adaptation plans. 'We accept the voices of concern that have been raised socially with a heavy heart,' company officials told local media, adding that they apologize to the original author of the webtoon series for the controversy.

New coed K-pop group Allday Project blazes different route to success
Challenging industry norms, group bets on streaming, global tours over romantic fan appeal For more than a decade, mixed-gender groups have struggled to find success in the K-pop industry. The last major breakthrough was Koyote, which rose to fame in the early 2000s and remains active today. While DSP Media's KARD has kept the concept alive in recent years, the group has not seen major commercial success, largely due to one key reason: It has not been able to offer fans the kind of pseudo-romantic fantasy that tends to fuel K-pop fandoms. As Hybe Chair Bang Si-hyuk — the mastermind behind BTS — once said, K-pop's explosive global growth over the past decade has been driven by "superfans" who are intensely loyal and emotionally engaged. It is widely understood in the industry that women make up the majority of paying K-pop fans. This demographic trend gives boy bands an edge in sales, as they tend to outperform girl groups in physical album sales and concert ticket revenues. Simulating a romantic bond with fans has become a core marketing tactic: Idols livestream frequently and send personal messages through fandom platforms like Weverse to maintain that connection. 'In K-pop, it's incredibly important to stir emotions like pseudo-romance or girl crush,' said music critic Lim Hee-yun. 'With coed groups, fans may speculate about members dating each other, which is considered taboo in the K-pop scene. That's why Allday Project appears to be targeting the global market more than the domestic one — perhaps sensing an opportunity for coed acts abroad.' A former executive at a major K-pop agency echoed this sentiment, adding that Allday Project is likely focused on international touring rather than physical album sales. 'Coed groups won't sell as many albums. Their music needs to stand out on streaming platforms,' the official said. 'Even if album sales are weak, strong musical identity and recognition overseas can lead to solid concert ticket sales.' The source also noted the group's age makeup: 'Why do you think all the members are adults, with the oldest debuting at 23? It's intentional — they're aiming for a mature, global audience.' Breaking away from easy listening In line with this global-first strategy, Allday Project has also broken away from the "easy listening" trend that has dominated K-pop over the last two to three years. Their latest single, 'Famous,' released last month, features heavy synthesizer basslines and guitar riffs layered over danceable beats, while the rap flows and melodic lines bring a sense of urgency and edge. 'Famous' stormed onto domestic streaming charts within hours of its release. Premiering as a music video first, the track entered Melon's Top 100 at No. 9 within six hours, eventually climbing to No. 1. The group's follow-up, 'Wicked,' debuted at No. 63 on the same chart and reached No. 2 on Vibe's real-time trending chart, signaling impressive digital power for a rookie group. The group's international momentum is also picking up. 'Wicked' was released in two versions, and its 'Movie Set' edition ranked No. 6 on YouTube's trending chart in the US. On Spotify, 'Famous' has racked up over 900,000 streams, while 'Wicked' has surpassed 400,000. Lim says the group could appeal to audiences who are more drawn to music and performance than mere idol-fan dynamics. 'There's potential here to spark a buzz among listeners who aren't already part of boy or girl group fandoms,' he said. 'Allday Project could offer something fresh as a coed group in today's oversaturated K-pop landscape.'
