Bumrah's presence in fifth Test would be a 'huge boost,' says Gill

India captain Shubman Gill said it would be a big deal for the team if pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah manages to play series-deciding fifth Test despite the team's original plan to restrict him to three matches.
Bumrah, who suffered a stress reaction earlier in the year, was initially scheduled to feature in only three Tests on the long England tour to manage his workload and prevent further injuries. He missed the second Test at Edgbaston but played in the other three.
With England leading the series 2-1 after a draw in Manchester, India must win at The Oval to level the five-match contest.
"If he feels like he's fully fit and available for us, I think it would be a great deal for us," Gill told BBC's 'Test Match Special'.
"If he's not playing, I still think we have the right kind of bowling attack," Gill added.
Bumrah bowled 33 overs in the fourth Test at Old Trafford and has approximately four and a half days to recover for the final match, which begins on July 31. He has bowled 119.4 overs in five innings across three Test matches so far, which is roughly 24 overs per innings.
However, given that he is India's joint highest wicket-taker in the series with 14 scalps (with Mohd Siraj), including two five-wicket hauls from three matches, the team may be tempted to bring him back for the finale.
Former England captain Alastair Cook believes Gill made the right tactical decision by not revealing whether Bumrah would play the fifth and final Test of the series.
"Even if he isn't going to play, you wouldn't tell people now, just on a purely tactical basis," Cook said.
"They made a mistake at the beginning of the series saying he could only play three, because you get thrown into a situation like now where the series is still on the line.
"If he's not fit to play, not playing is the right decision," he added.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that all fast bowlers are available for selection ahead of the Oval Test and didn't rule out Bumrah featuring in a fourth match.
"All the fast bowlers are there. There is no injury scare," Gambhir asserted on Sunday.
"We haven't had any conversation around the combination for the last Test. "No decision has been made on whether Jasprit Bumrah will play or not. Ultimately, whoever plays, they will try and do the job for the country," he added.
After the Lord's Test, India suffered a spate of setbacks, with Arshdeep Singh nursing a blow to his bowling hand, Akash Deep ruled out with a groin issue, and Mohammed Siraj battling general fatigue. All-rounder Nitesh Kumar Reddy was also ruled out of the series.
As a result, India had to fly in reinforcements from home. Anshul Kamboj joined the squad and was preferred over Prasidh Krishna in the playing XI.

Jofra Archer should not play Oval Test, Gus Atkinson can replace him: Stuart Broad

Former England pacer Stuart Broad has called for Jofra Archer to be rested for the fifth and final Test against India at the Kia Oval, warning that the injury-prone fast bowler should not be pushed too hard after back-to-back appearances. Broad believes Gus Atkinson, who is yet to feature in the series, should be given the nod for the decider, with England leading made a highly anticipated return to Test cricket in the third match at Lord's, picking up five wickets across both innings. He featured again in the fourth Test in Manchester, where India staged a resilient comeback on the final day to earn a draw. Shubman Gill (103), Ravindra Jadeja (107 not out), and Washington Sundar (101 not out) all struck centuries as India batted through the final day after starting their second innings 311 runs result means India can still level the series in the Oval Test, but with the Ashes in Australia just four months away, Broad has cautioned against overworking Archer, who has a lengthy injury history, particularly with his elbow and back. "We can't not have Archer for four years, bring him back and then bowl him into the ground and not see him for another four years." Instead, Broad is backing Atkinson to make his mark. "I think Gus Atkinson has to play. I know he has not had any workload, but we need to see him. He hasn't been really challenged against top-level opposition in Test cricket yet," Broad also raised concerns over the physical toll the series has taken on England's fast bowlers. "[Brydon] Carse looked knackered in the fourth Test. He's been a trier and given absolutely everything, but it looks like his legs have gone. So Atkinson gets the nod," he Tongue, who impressed earlier in the series, and fast-bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton - recalled for the first time since his debut in 2022 - are also part of the 15-man squad for the Oval Test. With skipper Ben Stokes battling cramp and other minor niggles, England's bowling options could be under increased scrutiny heading into the the temptation to go all out for a series win is high, Broad stressed that managing Archer's return with caution is crucial. "This is a big Test, but so is the Ashes. England must think long-term. Pushing Jofra now could come at a serious cost later."The fifth Test gets underway on Thursday at the Kia Oval.- EndsYou May Also Like

'Showed Why We Are A Great Team': Shubman Gill After Draw vs England In 4th Test

India skipper Shubman Gill reckons the belief to stage an epic final day turnaround in the fourth Test against England stemmed from his partnership with KL Rahul and in doing so, they showed why they are a "great team". Starting their second innings 311 runs in arrears after England racked up a massive first-innings total, Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar struck excellent hundreds to bail their team from the brink of defeat and remain in contention to level the five-match series. "To be able to have that same mindset for 140 overs is very difficult, and that is what differentiates a good team from a great team, and I think we showed that today, that is why we are a great team," Gill told the BCCI TV. "Zero for two and then the partnership between me and KL bhai, I think that's what ignited the belief that yes, we can achieve this task. Extremely, extremely happy. To be able to get a draw from the position that we were in yesterday is extremely satisfying," he added. Rahul played a neat 90-run knock and was associated in a partnership of 188 runs with Gill, after which the day belonged to the duo of Jadeja and Washington. Leading the Test team for the first time, the 25-year-old Gill has been prolific in this series and has already amassed 700 runs with four centuries including a double ton, but picked the one at Old Trafford as his best. "I think this inning of mine was the most pleasing to me," Gill said. The job was far from done for India when Gill was dismissed, but Jadeja and Washington batted with immense responsibility and showed character to deny the frustrated English players. "When Jaddu bhai and Washy were batting, it was not easy. The ball was doing something but the way they both batted, so calmly.. and to be able to get a Test century from there is when you realise how big an achievement it is," Gill lauded his teammates. For Washington especially, the knock was very special as it was his maiden Test hundred. Needless to say, he was delighted to have scored a hundred when his team needed it the most. "I think this hundred really means a lot and I'd genuinely love to dedicate this to my family because they've been extremely supportive throughout my time playing cricket right from day one. So, it definitely means a lot, a lot more for them," Washington said. That he had a seasoned campaigner like Jadeja at the other end benefitted Washington during their undefeated match-saving partnership of 223 runs on Sunday. "Jaddu bhai really played out those crucial spells, spinners were also getting a lot of purchase. So, we just wanted to focus really hard on watching the ball and it's just really special to have actually drawn this game. "This draw really means a lot for the whole setup and I'm sure this game is going to give us a lot more confidence," Washington said. England lead the series 2-1 heading into the final Test in London from Thursday.
