Basra rally denounces Khor Abdullah agreement as betrayal
Shafaq News – Basra On Friday, hundreds of Iraqis protested outside the Kuwaiti consulate in Basra province to reject the Khor Abdullah maritime agreement, denouncing what they called a 'surrender of maritime sovereignty.' Ali al-Abbadi, a representative of the demonstrators, told Shafaq News Agency that the issue of the Khor Abdullah agreement and its implications for Iraq's maritime boundaries remains a point of contention between the government and the people. 'While the Iraqi public sees the deal as humiliating and a violation of the country's territory and waters, the government views it as an unavoidable reality due to UN Security Council Resolution 833 of 1993.' Al-Abbadi added that the Federal Supreme Court had settled the dispute in September 2023 by declaring the 2013 law ratifying the agreement unconstitutional. However, he noted that public outrage followed a statement by Faiq Zidan, head of Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council, who—after a visit to Kuwait—claimed the court had rejected the same challenge it had previously upheld, arguing it lacked constitutional or legal grounds. Earlier, a majority of Iraqi lawmakers voiced support for the Federal Supreme Court's decision to void the agreement. MP Amer Abdul-Jabbar told Shafaq News that 194 out of 329 parliamentarians had signed a petition addressed to the head of the court, endorsing the September 2023 ruling.

Al-Sistani urges Arab, Islamic nations to end Gaza tragedy
Shafaq News – Najaf/Gaza On Friday, Iraq's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, urged the international community—particularly Arab and Islamic nations—to act immediately to end what he described as a "major humanitarian tragedy" unfolding in Gaza under Israeli military operations. In a statement released by his office, al-Sistani condemned what he called the "brutal savagery" of the Israeli occupation, which he said was part of an ongoing effort to displace Palestinians from their homeland. "While such acts of cruelty may be expected from the occupying forces," the statement read, "what is expected from the countries of the world—especially Arab and Islamic nations—is to ensure this immense humanitarian disaster does not continue.' Urging these countries to intensify their efforts to put an end to it, the statement stressed them to 'do everything in their power to compel the occupying entity and its supporters to allow the urgent delivery of food and essential supplies to innocent civilians." Al-Sistani warned that the worsening famine in Gaza, vividly portrayed by media outlets, is too grave to ignore. "These horrifying scenes of widespread starvation should prevent any person of conscience from enjoying food or drink in peace," the statement concluded.

France's top court cancels Al-Assad arrest order
Shafaq News – Paris On Friday, France's highest court annulled an arrest warrant issued against Former Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, over his alleged role in the 2013 chemical attacks near Damascus. The Court of Cassation ruled that heads of state are immune from prosecution in foreign courts, even in cases involving alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The original order, issued in November 2023, accused Al-Assad of complicity in the sarin gas attacks that killed more than 1,000 people in the towns of Adra and Douma, according to US intelligence assessments. Court President Christophe Soulard noted that although the original warrant is no longer valid due to Al-Assad's former status, new arrest orders could now be issued following his removal from power. Al-Assad was deposed in December 2024 and fled to Russia following a military takeover led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, who later assumed the role of Syria's transitional president.
