
'It sucks' or 'it was due for a change'? Winnipeg bus riders give their takes on new transit network
Some people in Winnipeg are struggling with the city's newly revamped transit system on the first weekday after its rollout — but others say they're willing to give the new routes a chance, despite some hiccups.
On Sunday, Winnipeg Transit launched its primary transit network, which it calls the most significant single-day transformation in its history.
It replaces the city's decades-old "hub-and-spoke" model, where buses meandered through outlying neighbourhoods before heading downtown. In the new "spine-and-feeder" system, buses follow a more grid-like pattern, with straighter routes along major arteries, and smaller feeder routes connecting to residential areas.
Transit rider Lisa Mittelstadt says the changes tack an extra 20 minutes onto her work commute each way — making a one-way trip roughly an hour and a half long. On Monday, it also meant taking three buses to get from Westwood to her job in south Winnipeg.
"I had to revamp my whole schedule around it," Mittelstadt said, waiting for a bus near CF Polo Park mall. "I just hope people speak out and let the city know how they're feeling about it, if it's good or if it's bad, and make the adjustments accordingly if they need to."
Fellow transit rider Kim Tychuk put it more bluntly, while waiting for a bus nearby.
"I think it sucks," said Tychuk, who has to take four buses to get to work and home each day. "I just want it back the way it was."
But not everyone was disappointed with the changes. Bo Karaman took the bus to go shopping on Sunday, when the new system rolled out, and was happy with the ride and the blue-vested Winnipeg Transit "travel trainers" at stops along major routes, helping people navigate the system.
"It was due for a change, I guess, and here we are…. People don't really like change, but I guess we're going to have to suffer with it for a while," Karaman said while waiting for a bus on Osborne Street.
"I think it should work. But I mean, you know, most people have anxieties and fears of the unknown, right?"
While the changes only recently took effect, the plan has been in the works for years. Winnipeg Transit posted the new schedules online weeks ago, adding a feature to its website that allowed riders to plan their trips using the new routes, and has been changing signage to prepare riders.
Bus rider Katherine Morgan said she saw some things that could be improved when she took a bus Sunday to Assiniboine Park.
While the ride there was straightforward, there was trouble on the ride back when the second bus she got on was a bit late, making her miss the third one she was supposed to transfer to. By the time she arrived to catch the third bus, the next one was 64 minutes away — so she just walked the rest of the way back.
"It is a concern, and I do feel the city somehow has to fix that," Morgan said while waiting for a bus in south Winnipeg. "And I feel for those who have mobility challenges, those who have young children — they can't wait 64 minutes."
Those are some of the same concerns raised by Heather Scott and Lana Ponting, who live at the Riverside Lions seniors residence.
Scott said she takes the bus daily to get to appointments and the mall, and with the new changes she'll have to walk a lot more to get to and from her destination. But because she has epilepsy, she worries about having a seizure while out walking on her own so much.
"They need to rethink what they're doing and start thinking about how seniors are going to get around, and people with mobility and medical issues," Scott said.
Ponting said while she only uses the bus occasionally, she thinks the changes made to Winnipeg's transit network "is not fair to the seniors in the city," many of whom will have to walk more to get around.
"I'm not saying I can't – I could. But that's not the point. The point is, why take away a bus stop when you've got loads of seniors in this building and other buildings in the city? The buses should be accessible to everyone," Ponting said.
While the new network relies on passengers transferring more often and walking longer distances to get to stops, Winnipeg Transit has said it will be more reliable and efficient thanks to straighter routes, fewer stops and routes that avoid travelling through congested downtown traffic.

‘Incredibly frustrating': YVR laments weekend of extensive delays
An incident involving an aggressive passenger on board a busy morning sailing is just one example of the risks BC Ferries workers face on the job, the union say Vancouver International Airport is expecting its busiest summer ever, and it's off to a rough start, following a weekend with major flight delays due to a shortage of air traffic controllers. There were more than two hundred flight delays over the weekend and dozens of cancellations, when crowds were travelling ahead of Canada Day. 'Saturday (was) an incredibly frustrating day for passengers,' Stephen Smart, the airport's head of communications told CTV News on Monday. 'Incredibly frustrating day for our partners. Incredibly frustrating day for us.' The airport has pointed to what it calls resource restraints with air traffic controllers as the reason for the disruption. Some were unavailable to work with little-to-no notice during one of the airport's busiest weekends, according to Smart. 'NAV Canada had that last minute staffing issue come up, and as a result they had to dial back how many aircraft they could handle coming into YVR at any given hour,' Smart said. The frustration is also being felt by airlines. 'Canadians deserve consistent accountability and service standards across the entire aviation eco-system,' a statement from WestJet said adding that the airline is 'calling on the federal government to work with all stakeholders to find an immediate solution to support the structural challenges that NAV Canada is facing.' Air Canada also shared its concerns. 'The issue seriously affects passengers not only flying to/from YVR, but across Air Canada's network, as knock-on effects from aircraft and crews which are delayed in YVR can then be delayed at other airports downline,' a statement from the airline said. 'We are engaged in dialogue with NAV Canada and expect solutions that will allow the country's air transport ecosystem to operate smoothly and meet Canadians' and global passengers' travel expectations going forward.' NAV Canada said it is dealing with staff shortages and regrets the impact delays is having on travellers. 'Our team is doing everything it can to ensure aircraft are moving, first and foremost safely, but also efficiently and we regret any impacts to the flying public,' said Jonathan Bagg with NAV Canada. By Monday, operations were mostly back to normal, in time for what the airport anticipated would be the busiest day of a quasi-long weekend. But with a busy travel season ahead – some have concerns further turbulence could be ahead.

Alcohol to be permitted on Windsor pedal pubs starting July 1
Pedal pub passengers in Windsor will soon be able to sip a drink while they ride. The Ford government has announced that, starting July 1, alcohol can be served and consumed on pedal-powered tour bikes in Ontario — including Windsor, one of four cities in the province where the businesses already operate. The change is being welcomed by Windsor's downtown councillor. 'Looking forward to seeing that happen. It's another cool thing to be happening in the community,' said Ward 3 City Councillor Renaldo Agostino. Previously, drinking on pedal pubs was not allowed. Participants could travel between licensed establishments but weren't permitted to drink onboard. The new rules, enabled by a regulation change under Ontario's Liquor Licence and Control Act, will allow alcohol with a special licence from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. 'Anytime you can, instead of taking away when it comes to experiences, that's a good thing,' Agostino said. 'And this is that, the government adding an experience that people are doing all over the place. I know people go over to Detroit all the time for it. It's a fun thing to do to get a group of friends together. And it's a daytime activity. It's something different and it'll be cool in Windsor.' Agostino said questions about safety and liability remain to be seen, but is confident that this is a positive step for the local community. 'I think the most important thing is how the AGCO will regulate it. Because there is some danger when you're drinking on a pedal bike,' he said. 'But, you know, we're not the first to do it, so we won't be the last. It will be interesting to see how the insurance companies in this country handle it, because that's a whole other level of complexity when it comes to do stuff like that, since obviously there's gotta be some type of insurance coverage, and I'm not sure anybody in the province offers that type of coverage.' Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie also applauded the move, calling it a boost to the region's tourism and small business sectors. 'Really, what we saw here was a great opportunity to allow for more local Ontario product to be distributed, local Ontario breweries, wineries, cideries, other producers,' Dowie said in an interview on AM800's Dan MacDonald Show. 'Gives them another venue to sell, our local products and create a destination experience for our community.' Dowie added, 'This is one more step in our growth of the tourism industry that we have here in Windsor-Essex.' Operators of Windsor's Pedal & Pour tour say the change has been a long time coming. 'It is exciting news, like, beyond exciting to hear that they are finally going to allow us to serve alcohol, as we've been waiting for this for about three years,' said Head of Public Relations Leeann Corbeil. Corbeil said the business was created to offer a new kind of experience. 'We started this business to bring some unique opportunities to people living in Windsor, but also those that are there for tourism,' she said. 'You know, there was always these opportunities across the border, but not on this side. So it also opens up the opportunity for local breweries and restaurants.' She added, 'As you know, we encourage 2 or 3 stops on the tour to go and experience some of these restaurants and pubs and breweries that they might not have tried otherwise. I know adding the opportunity for them to have a drink on route to these, I think, just adds a little extra to the whole experience.' Locals who spoke to CTV News also shared support for the plan — with some caveats. 'Yeah, I think it's a good idea,' said Windsor resident Eric Brouillard. 'As long as they're cautious, you know, they're not drinking and driving too much, you know? I mean, have a couple of drinks, socialize or whatever, but, yeah, just be careful and make sure that you stay hydrated with some water or something too.' 'As long as there is something nice to do in the city and it's exciting and the driver is not drinking, it's great,' added John Vacratsas. 'The more we have downtown the better it is.' To serve alcohol onboard, pedal pub operators must be licensed through the AGCO, which will maintain oversight and enforce responsible service rules. Municipalities, including Windsor, retain authority to regulate routes, hours of operation and other safety considerations. Ontario officials say the change supports the province's $32-billion tourism industry and aligns with efforts to modernize its alcohol marketplace.
